Johns Hopkins Spring Invitational (3/30/24)

Post by Nurostep »

I am very pleased to announce that Johns Hopkins University Quiz Bowl will be hosting a SWAMP mirror on March 30, 2024.

Logistics
The tournament will be held in person at Johns Hopkins, street address at 3400 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21218. Room locations will be updated closer to the tournament date. Parking is available at the South Garage at a flat rate of $9 for the day, and a map of campus can be found here.

This is a closed tournament for high school teams, meaning all players on a team must attend the same high school (2/21 edit: open teams may be allowed on a case-by-case basis as approved by both JHU Quizbowl and the SWAMP team). A maximum of 6 players can be on a single team, with a maximum of four in at a time. If possible, we recommend only four players on each team to maximize playing time for all members. The tournament will follow typical ACF gameplay rules.

To register for the tournament, please use this Google Form.

Payment and Discounts
Base fee: $75/team
Staff discount: -$10/approved staffer with laptop (limit of two per team)
Buzzer discount: -$5/working buzzer set
Shorthanded discount (1 or 2 person team): -$25
**Note: the shorthanded discount can only be applied to one team from each school.

Minimum fee: $40/team

Payment can be made the day of the tournament either by cash, check, PayPal, or Zelle. Please make checks out to "Johns Hopkins University."

Important Dates
All deadlines are set at 11:59 Eastern on the dates listed.
Monday, March 25th: Tournament registration deadline
Thursday, March 28th: Team drop deadline (past this point, teams that drop will be expected to pay the full tournament fee) and roster submission deadline

Regarding multiple team registration, schools will be allowed up to 3 teams, with additional teams (up to two more, a maximum of five) placed on the waitlist until March 25th, after which any additional teams will be placed in the field assuming there are still additional spots.

JHU Quiz Bowl is committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity, tolerance, and compassion for all competitors, who come from a variety of backgrounds and have lived experiences that deeply enrich our events. We strive to provide a safe learning environment for all students who play our tournaments and as such hold a zero-tolerance policy for harassment, discrimination, violence, and bigotry of any kind, reserving the right to remove any player from competition deemed out of compliance with such an ideal. I am pleased to announce that JHU Spring is now a PACE Qualifier, meaning the top 20% of teams at the tournament will qualify for the 2024 PACE NSC!

The tournament is still two weeks out and we are at 15 teams out of our 16 team field cap! If more teams plan to sign up, please do so soon (or even just send us an email to let us know) so we can do whatever we can to guarantee having enough rooms and staff to expand the field!
