Venetian IV (Online, Feb-Mar, Individuals)

Post by oriley »

“[Staffing] this tournament quickly convinced me I'd enjoy playing.” — Jeremy Cummings

“Venetian might well have the best price-to-writing quality ratio of all the quiz competitions out there." — Joel Miles

“I like that I can try to double every bonus with no real life repercussions. And the strategy’s fun.” — Sinecio Morales

It’s the reason why quizbowl has been played in a boat in the Baltic Sea, a tent in Eswatini, and a Roman prison. Good afternoon, and welcome back to Venetian.

Information
This is the announcement post for Venetian IV, a bonus-only format open for individuals of all ages. All information about the tournament can be found on the website here.

The question set for Venetian IV was written by Jason Qin, Shiva Tegulla, Eric Mukherjee, Camden Williams, Andy Yu, Angela Sun, Sophia Wu, Anuj Damle, Pranav Aiyar, Abigail AuYeung, Allie Hoffert, Costas Pavlou, and myself, Owen Riley.

In the Americas, there will be division splits between people over 18 and people at/under 18. There will also be “novice” (high school regular difficulty) and “championship” (EFT difficulty prelims, college regular/2 dot difficulty playoffs) divisions at each age group, for a total of four divisions (in the United States, the high school graduating class of 2024 is considered U18). There will also be European and Asia-Pacific divisions.

All information can be found at the above link. Some further notes and clarifications:
  • The tournament runs for six weeks, starting the week of February 11. Players play one game between Sunday and Tuesday each week at a time that works for their schedules.
  • Many of the questions in each version of the set are adapted from the other. Players will not be able to spectate any games in other divisions until their weekly game has been played.
  • Registration is through the website linked above. Registrations are called “tickets” because the template won’t let me edit the word “ticket,” so we roll with it.
  • I am running several practice games on packets from the most recent tournament. If that would interest you, let me know and I’ll see what I can put together.
I can be reached by email at “oriley1201 AT icloud DOT com,” or through my website at “owner AT uqcquizbowl DOT org.” Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions.

Enjoy the tournament!

Are the results and/or packets from Venetians I, II, and III posted somewhere public?

A frequently asked question. . .

From the Overview section at the top of the event page:
  • Each player will play one game per week at times which work for each player’s schedule.
  • Each game week lasts from 12:00 PM US Central Time on Sunday to 11:59 PM US Central Time on Tuesday.
  • Games are expected to last about 35 minutes each.
  • Each player is guaranteed to play six games.
  • Games will be played starting the week of February 11, through the week of March 17.

The four players in a game schedule that game for a time within the gameweek that works for all of their schedules. A game could theoretically be scheduled for any time within that gameweek, so long as a staffer is available for it. For example, in the first week, if you are not available to play on Sunday the 11th, you could play on Monday the 12th or Tuesday the 13th.
