Central NY Winter Invitational (CNYWIn) - Bishop Ludden Junior/Senior HS, Syracuse, NY (2/10/24) [NAQT IS-226]

Post by mrkirkmath »

The Unofficial Central New York Quizbowl Alliance (CNYQuA) is hosting its first Winter Invitational Tournament on Saturday, February 10, 2024. This tournament will be held at Bishop Ludden Junior/Senior High School in Syracuse, NY. We expect all players to be present on site by 8:30 for a morning informational meeting, and we plan to start the first round no later than 9:00.

Set Used
We will be using NAQT Invitational Series Packet 226, a standard-difficulty set for high school teams. We suggest reviewing NAQT’s list of tournaments organized by packet to check for possible conflicts with this tournament.

Registration
We are using NAQT’s registration system to manage registrations for this tournament. You will need to log in to the NAQT site in order to register; if you do not already have an account, you can quickly create one on that site. On initial registration, please provide your school name, number of teams intended (this can be changed later), your name/contact information, the number of buzzer systems and staffers you are bringing (if any), and any other information we should know. You can complete registration without listing a roster; that step can come later. Registration will close on Sunday, February 4

Fee Structure
The base price is $80 for the first team and $70 for each additional team. We are also offering a $10 discount for each functioning lock-out buzzer system provided by the team and a $10 discount for each staffer provided by the school. The minimum fee per team is $60. Checks should be written to "Bishop Ludden STEM Club" and can be turned in on February 10th or mailed ahead of time to:
Bishop Ludden STEM Club
℅ Maxine Babcock
815 Fay Rd
Syracuse, NY 13219

On-site Contact Information
This tournament will be directed by former Benjamin Kirk. He can be reached for questions at [email protected] or contacted by phone at (607) 329-6005.

Lunch
Lunch will be provided on-site. Details TBD. We do not recommend teams plan to leave campus for lunch, as there are no convenient options located near the school.

Misconduct Information
All players, spectators, and coaches must adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct. Players, spectators, and coaches should report misconduct either directly to staff or via the misconduct form found at the bottom of the PACE Code of Conduct. Every instance of misconduct will be dealt with seriously by tournament staff. Similarly, the staff will investigate every allegation of cheating and reserves the right to report confirmed cheaters to local and national Quizbowl organizations.

Tournament Format
Games will consist of 20 tossup/bonus pairs, read in untimed matches. During play, we use NAQT’s Standard Rules with the exception that we will use five-second timing: five seconds to buzz in after tossup completion, five seconds to start answer to tossup after buzz, five seconds to start answer to bonus after bonus completion. The exact bracketing format used will depend on the final number of registered teams, but we expect to run a quasi-seeded round robin format in the morning, followed by a rebracketing and another round robin after lunch, with a single final match to determine tournament champion if needed.

Top finishers will qualify for the 2024 NAQT High School and/or Small School National Championships, and we anticipate they will also qualify for the 2024 PACE National Scholastic Championship.

Do you need any staff? I live just outside of Syracuse and would love to get involved with the organization, unofficial as it may be.
