OASIS IV @ Olympian High School (12/16/2023)

Post by Dylan Y. »

The Olympian Quizbowl team is proud to announce the fourth iteration of Olympian Academic SoCal Invitational Showdown (OASIS IV)! This tournament will be directed by Dylan Rafael Yamzon and Martin Auriel Costa. Our advisor is Ms. Debra Hake.

Questions:
There will be a Varsity and JV division. Varsity will be running NAQT’s Invitational Series #222 question set, while JV will be running SCOP Novice 13.

Location:
This tournament will be held at Olympian High School (1925 Magdalena Avenue, Chula Vista, CA, 91913). We will be using the 400 and 600 buildings for the tournament, and check-in will be in Room 418. A map of the campus can be found here. Because this tournament falls on the same day as a big wrestling tournament, the main parking lot will be occupied. Instead, if you need to park, head around to the back of the school and park in the East Hills Academy parking lot, located here.

Date and Time:
This tournament will be held on December 16, 2023. Check-in will begin at 8:00 AM, and rounds will begin at 9:00 AM. Both divisions will likely finish at around 5-6 PM.

Eligibility:
Varsity - All high school teams are welcome to participate in this division.

Junior Varsity - All members of a team must meet the following requirements:
  1. not scored 50+ PPG at a junior varsity/novice tournament
  2. not scored 30+ PPG at a varsity/HS-regs tournament
  3. not scored 10+ PPG at a national-level tournament (HSNCT, PACE NSC, etc)
Statistics may be checked for eligibility here. Exceptions may be requested and will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Format:
Though the exact brackets will depend on the number of teams registered, the varsity division will most likely run a two-bracket round robin followed by rebracketing after lunch, with a playoff and consolation bracket in the afternoon. The JV division will run a round robin, with every team playing each other once.

There will be a soft field cap of 12 teams for the varsity division, with the possibility of expanding it depending on interest and staff availability. The JV division will most likely stay capped at 10 teams due to SCOP Novice 13 only having 10 packets.

Teams can have up to six players per team, although only four can play at any given point in a match. Substitutions can be made at halftime in each game. This is a closed tournament, meaning that a team must only consist of players from the same school.

The tournament will adhere to the official NAQT rules with the exception that each round will run as two untimed halves with ten toss up-bonus cycles in each half. ACF rules will be used in regards to timing (5/5/5).

Pricing and Discounts:
The first team for each school will cost $95, with each subsequent team costing $85.

Below are the available discounts:
-$5 for each fully-functional buzzer system provided (must have at least 8 buzzers, the ability to recognize who buzzed, and a lockout system).
-$5 for every 50 miles traveled one-way, according to Google Maps.
-$10 for each competent moderator with their own laptop (must be capable of editing Google Sheets).

Any team composed entirely of students that have not competed in a Quizbowl tournament before (including middle school) will pay a flat fee of $55 dollars. This is also the minimum fee for a team.

Registration:
Teams may sign up for the tournament here. Registration will end on Monday, December 11, 2023, and all teams that sign up after will have to pay a late registration fee of $10.

Food:
There are several malls in the area, the closest being Otay Ranch Mall. However, the walk takes around 25-30 minutes, so it is recommended that you either drive there or bring your own lunch. Options include but are not limited to Luna Grill, In-N-Out, Panera Bread, Panda Express, Jersey Mike’s, Rubios, Panchos Taco Shop, Chick-Fil-A, Jack in the Box, and McDonalds.

Misconduct:
Cheating and harassment will not be tolerated at this tournament. All attendees are expected to adhere to the PACE code of conduct, and failure to do so will result in the player/team responsible being removed from the tournament. Should such an incident occur, please report it to either a staff member or through this misconduct form.

We hope to see you all there!

Yes, middle schools are welcome to participate! While we recommend that they play in the JV division, that isn't strictly required. Feel free to sign up in any division!

I am so sorry. I just saw this response and it is too late for us to gather our teams with the upcoming break. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any other tournaments in the near future, at "[email protected]". Thanks
Radha Vishwanath.
