Blacksburg Brain Bowl II (1/13/24)

Post by kamikaze »

Hello all. I'm Bob Powers, your tournament director, and I am happy to announce the second annual Blacksburg Brain Bowl (BBB) will take place in-person at Blacksburg High School in scenic southwest Virginia. We've scheduled our tournament for January 13, 2022. For most teams in the state of Virginia, it's one of the last tournament to compete in before the craziness of the VHSL tournaments start to happen.

LOCATION: Blacksburg High School, 3401 Bruin Lane, Blacksburg, VA, 24060

QUESTIONS: We are seeking the use of the SHOW-ME set. For further details about its distribution, click on this link here: viewtopic.php?t=26957

AFFILIATION: We are now PACE-affiliated. The top 20% will qualify for the national championship at the end of season. Teams that fall within the Blue Ridge Academic League (BRAL) footprint will earn points towards their schools and players earning sweepstakes awards at the end of the season. The BRAL footprint is defined as the counties of Alleghany, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Campbell, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Halifax, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick. Pulaski, Roanoke, Rockbridge and the cities of Bedford, Buena Vista, Covington, Danville, Lexington, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Radford, Roanoke, and Salem.

FORMAT: Right now, we are planning to offer 10 rounds of competition. Our field cap is 18 teams but we reserve the right to expand the field should we find enough moderators. The format of a round will be the standard 20/20. We will award trophies to the top three teams and some sort of prize for our top ten individuals after preliminary play.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:
BASE FEE: $80 per team. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school.
STAFF DISCOUNT: $15 per qualified staffer. Details about what will be required of staffers will be passed along to those we need to help with the tournament.
BUZZER DISCOUNT: $5 per working buzzer system. Please make sure your system is in complete working condition for two teams of four individuals before attending our tournament.
TRAVEL DISCOUNT: $20 off for any team that had to travel in excess of 150 miles determined by Google Maps using the schools as endpoints.
FIRST TIMERS DISCOUNT: For any team that has not participated in any invitational (outside of VHSL competition), their FIRST team will receive a 50% discount off the base fee (i.e., $40). However, any additional team they bring will need to pay $80 per team.
Minimum entry fee per school: $40

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. If you bring more than six players, you should register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three or less players. We also ask that there is an adult on the premises that is responsible for the team.

FOOD: For lunch, we are situated in a fairly decent area near restaurants. A map and time will be given to teams to go out and get lunch before resuming competition.

CODE OF CONDUCT: Everyone attending the tournament is expected to follow the PACE Code of Conduct (http://www.pace-nsc.org/nsc-code-of-conduct). This includes players, coaches, parents, spectators, anybody you are bringing from your school. Anybody who witnesses a violation should be asked to contact myself or any of the tournament staff to report the matter. Should a violation have been determined to occur, the player will be removed from the competition.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Bob Powers at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you all here!
