What is your favorite match?

Post by quizbowlcaptain »

Hello there lovers of quizbowl. I recently played a match against rivals Gadsden Middle School, and although we lost, it was a fun match and a great game. So, it got me thinking, what is the most fun match you have ever played?

IMO, a match against Monrovia Middle last year, in which we won with a narrow victory 340-300, after we got tossup twenty. Also, this match sent us to MSNCT, so pretty nostalgic. A close second would be the Chenery-River Trail match that RIver Trail won, handing Chenery their only defeat in the tournament.

For me, it has to be our recent match against Carmel A. We had just lost our last second group stage match to them to send it into a Carmel-advantage final. We went behind early but pulled back and while there are so many good buzzes I cannot share (darn you unclear set content), we eventually were vanquished on the tiebreaker after Anthony Pho out-buzzed me. But I regard this as a great sign even though it hurt to just barely lose, because having our 150-student middle school come so close to the quiz bowl dynasty of like 4500-student Carmel High School was amazing.

We were at MSNCT, and we played Howard B. I negged on the 2nd tossup, and they rallied. By tossup 6, the score was 100 to -5. As you all know, MSNCT uses 9-minute halves with 24 tossups. We played 11 tossups in the first. After the tossup I mentioned above, we went crazy. I got 10 tossups and 2 powers, scoring 86.36 points that game. We ended up winning 170-150. This is still my favorite game of all time. It's the one I tell at parties, and my second-highest scoring game ever, just .50 behind my domination of Padiea. I absolutely love this game. Here is the link to the game.

Our game at MSNCT last year against St. Mark's stands out for me. They were a really good team and I wasn't expecting for us to beat them. When we did actually win, it felt like a sign that we had finally made it to the level where we could compete against and beat good teams, so that one has good memories associated with it.

For me, it has to be our game against Spectrum A last year. Their full team had not lost a single game to any other Minnesota MS team (including us), and given that it was my last year in MS quiz bowl last year I was nursing a bit of a grudge against them because of that. The match itself did not disappoint, and I won't lie- my powering the last question to beat them by 10(!) points was the highlight of my middle school quiz bowl career (I had never won a tournament before). Sure, they placed ahead of us at MSNCT, but I'll always have that game-and that tournament-over them.

My favorite match was when me and my teammate Eli played SANDS National Online Mirror. Even if the set was really easy, I had my first 100 point game in a tournament keeping individual stats. We ended up winning against Chaska 515-115, and I had 7/2/0 for 125 points. I'll never forget my first 100 point game on a tournament with individual stats, even if it was novice. Also I actually averaged 68.57 ppg, probably never happening again unless I end up playing another novice tournament on an easy set.
