ETEOSAP open tournament at Tusculum University, 7-29-2023

Post by TusculumPearson »

This is the formal announcement of and invitation of registrations for the return of the East Tennessee End-of-Summer Academic Party, or ETEOSAP, to be held on July 29 at Tusculum University in Greeneville, Tennessee.

Read more, or just get your team’s registration going:

WHAT IT IS
ETEOSAP does what it says on the tin. I gather any team or mash-up of quiz players who wants to show up at my place, and we party the only way we know how - we play our buzzer game on the most appropriate set of questions we can get, for as long as we can stand. This year, that set…

SET
…is the questions from NAQT’s Small School National Championship Tournament (SSNCT - Rounds 1-13), with gratitude to our NAQT friends for their provision.

FORMAT
This is a completely open tournament. High school teams, college teams, masters’ teams, or a mashup of any subset. We know quizbowl well enough to know a high school team could hand it to masters on a given day, and we’ll give any collection of players that opportunity to do the handing (or have it handed to them!).

The only players the tournament would NOT be open to are players who actually played NAQT’s SSNCT, or coaches who plausibly would have heard the questions. That’s nobody in East Tennessee and nobody nearby in Southwest Virginia or Western North Carolina. We have that list (and I did staff SSNCT, so I’m aware of you one way or another) and we’ll keep tabs on it.

Preliminary field cap is 9 teams, because we don’t tend to go too much bigger with this summer silliness - but if we get the staffers, we’ll expand.

FEES AND DISCOUNTS
We intend to get you as many rounds as you can stand, with a guarantee of 7 matches for everybody and a rebracketed/restructured tournament of up to another 6 matches for the evening for whoever wants to play it.

So we’re going to charge a flat $80 per team for the 8-match minimum, and if you play the initial tournament you get as many extra games as you want (and that somebody’s willing to play against you) on top. No discount for “additional teams from the same school” as that might not mean anything to most of the field - $80 per team flat.

We will offer standard discounts: discount of $5 per buzzer set provided (maximum of 2 discounts), discount of $10 per staffer a team provides (maximum of 3 discounts). Team minimum fee is $50.

Free agents can get places in the field to be paired up with appropriate teammates for $30 a head. (If a single player intends to play solo against the field, we’d rather that player pay for a full team’s place in the field - but we’ll negotiate that if need be.)

STAFFERS
Regardless of whether you’re representing a team for discounts or you just enjoy reading a whole ton of quizbowl questions to whosoever will come, we ask that our staffers register to let us keep tabs on how they’ll best be used:

PRIZES
Your greatest prize is the ability to play national championship questions among your closest quizbowl friends. That’s worth $80 a team, isn’t it?

Okay, fine, we might come up with some cheap books too.

DISCLAIMERS
Some information is subject to change; if changes occur, they will be posted on this thread.

And, as always, in the words of the genial quizmaster, all decisions of the tournament director are arbitrary, capricious, and final.

The party returns July 29. Come join us.

A viable field update for ETEOSAP, as of July 25:

Seth Kendall "et al."
Big Celiac (Tennessee; Barnes et al.)
"Yes, we're from Ohio. Get your jokes in now." (Kilner et al.)
Karas/Shemontee/Rama collaboration
Richlands A (Simmons' Last Stand)
Richlands B (Woody et al.)
It Negs The Question (Cookeville; Matson et al.)
Tulsa Requires 1/4 the Size of Plane (Cookeville; Swallows et al.)
Gate City + Alum (Ford et al.)

Free agents/recombinants/possible solo player(s):
Dylan Cox
Malachi Ledford
Justin Hawkins
Possible additional Richlands players

ETEOSAP Prime will be anywhere from 10 to 12 teams. ETEOSAP Evening will be worked out on the fly, and may recombine interested players into different teams.
