ESPN (Spring 2024, 3.5-4 Dot)

Post by estrom »

We are pleased to announce Ethan Strombeck’s Pre-Nationals (ESPN), an open tournament scheduled for Spring 2024. Our aim is to create a set that is both challenging and fun for the open audience, and with that in mind, we are targeting a difficulty between 3.5 and 4 dots.

Our current set of writers are as follows: Ethan Strombeck, Hari Parameswaran, Geoffrey Chen, Arjun Nageswaran, Jason Hong, Walter Zhang, Katherine Lei, Steven Liu, Ethan Ashbrook, Mazin Omer, Tim Morrison, Annabelle Yang, Hasna Karim, William Golden, Eve Fleisig

ESPN will consist of 14 packets of 22/22 questions. Tossups will be capped at 850 characters, while bonuses will be capped at 8 lines in Times New Roman 10 pt. Our distribution and current subject editors are as follows:

Head Editor: Ethan Strombeck
Logistics:

4/4 Science
1/1 Chem (Editor: Mazin Omer)
1/1 Bio (Editor: Geoffrey Chen)
1/1 Physics (Editor: Adam Fine)
1/1 Other Science (Editor: Geoffrey Chen, math will be separately edited by Tim Morrison)

4/4 History
0.75/0.75 American History (Editor: Walter Zhang)
1/1 European History (Editor: Gov Prabhakar)
1.5/1.5 World History (Editor: Hari Parameswaran)
0.75/0.75 Ancient/Other History (Editor: Jason Hong)

4/4 Literature
1.25/1.25 Long Fiction (Editor: Tim Morrison)
1/1 Poetry (Editor: Caroline Mao)
0.75/0.75 Drama (Editor: Tim Morrison)
1/1 Short/Other Fiction (Editor: Eve Fleisig)

3.5/3.5 Fine Arts
1/1 Painting and Sculpture (Editor: Hari Parameswaran)
1/1 Classical Music (including opera) (Editor: Eve Fleisig)
0.75/0.75 Other Auditory (Editor: Ethan Strombeck)
0.75/0.75 Other Visual (Editor: Tim Morrison, architecture will be separately edited by Ethan Strombeck)

1.5/1.5 Beliefs
0.75/0.75 Religion (Editor: Hasna Karim / Annabelle Yang)
0.75/0.75 Mythology (Editor: Hasna Karim / Annabelle Yang)

2.5/2.5 Thought
1/1 Philosophy (Editor: Tim Morrison)
1.5/1.5 Social Science (Editor: Geoffrey Chen, linguistics will be separately edited by Eve Fleisig)

2.5/2.5 Other
0.75/0.75 Geography (Editor: Noah Sheidlower)
0.75/0.75 Current Events (Editor: Walter Zhang)
1/1 Other Academic (Editor: Walter Zhang)

Some of the changes we made to the standard 20/20 in this expanded distribution include:
  • Cutting from the American History distribution to include more space for World History.
  • Using the extra 2/2 to dedicate 0.75/0.75 for Other Visual Arts and Other Auditory Arts, as well as an expansion to Geography, Current Events, and Other Academic.
The distribution is open to change, and this post would be updated should that happen.

Open Call for Editors and Writers:
At this time, there are still several open editor spots. Because of this, we are putting out an open call for writers / editors. If you would be interested in writing / editing, please fill out this form, and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Applications will close on June 15th, 2023.

We are also looking for a logistics coordinator for the set, so please email [email protected] (along with the names of a few references who can vouch for you) if you are interested in that position.

The set is a little over 25% completed, and we expect to finish by March. More details regarding mirrors will be available closer to that date.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The mirror fee will be $60 per team. All mirror requests and questions regarding the set should be emailed to [email protected] with the subject line "ESPN."

Any updates on a midwest mirror? I would like to attend but my chances of attending are 0% if a date and location aren't announced with sufficient time beforehand.

It appears that Chicago will be able to host a Midwest mirror for ESPN; expect an official announcement from Adam Fine within the next few weeks (for now the announcement post will be updated to indicate a date TBA Chicago tournament). We are still in the process of hiring a logistics coordinator, but we plan to have more sites announced before the end of the year. I am also updating the post to reflect the announced Columbia date and for Stanford's not-yet-announced West Coast mirror (date TBA).

On a separate note, given the current standing of the set we are putting out a call for chemistry and physics writers. I have linked a new writers' call form here, please fill out by next Friday (December 15) if interested.

UPDATE: I can now confirm the rumors: the UChicago mirror will be March 23rd.

Starting to work on travel/lodging for this--would it be possible to get an announcement thread?

I, too, would like to have an announcement for the Chicago mirror soon. Even if there is still logistics to be settled, it would be nice to have a team formation spreadsheet or something.
