2023 Minnesota Pre-Nationals Tournament @ UMN (April 8th 2023)

Post by BenWeiner27 »

The University of Minnesota Quiz Bowl team is excited to announce the 2023 Minnesota Pre-Nationals Tournament on Saturday April 8th, 2023. The tournament will be held at Folwell Hall on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus. I, Ben Weiner, will be the tournament director. We ask that all teams arrive by 8:30a so that we can begin the tournament promptly by 9:00a.

This will be a high school tournament using NAQT’s Division II Sectional Championship Tournament set. We will be playing using modified NAQT rules with major changes being that rounds are not timed (twenty tossup/bonus cycles will be read per match). The difficulty of this set is somewhere between a regular difficulty NAQT IS set and the set used at NAQT’s HSNCT. This tournament is a great way to help teams prepare for both the 2023 HSNCT and the 2023 SSNCT!

Fee Structure
The fee structure for Minnesota Pre-Nats will be as follows:
Base Entry Fee: $80
Buzzer Discount: -$5 for working buzzer system
Staffer Discount: -$10 per staffer with laptop
Long Range Discount: -$10 for each 100 miles traveled one way

Minimum Fee: $50 per team

Discounts will be awarded on a first come first served basis depending on the number of teams and the supply of house staffers. We will notify all teams on whether or not they will be receiving a discount they have requested at least 7 days before the tournament.

Teams registering for this tournament (or any other UMN tournament) will be invoiced by the University of Minnesota’s finance department with instructions on how to pay as the date of the tournament nears.

Any team cancelling their registration after 11:59 PM on Thursday, April 6th will be expected to pay their team’s full registration fee.

Chaperones
The University of Minnesota’s minor policies requires that all minors must be accompanied by an adult chaperone at all University or on-campus events. In line with this, we require each school (though not necessarily each team) to bring at least one adult chaperone that remains present throughout the duration of their team’s time at the tournament.

COVID-19 Policy
Starting in Fall 2022, the University of Minnesota no longer requires masks or face coverings at on-campus events. However, if any player or coach tests positive for COVID-19 in the week preceding the tournament, we ask that you inform us and do not attend the tournament.

Roster Size
There will be a maximum of 6 players per team. We recommend that teams that have more than 4 players consider splitting into multiple teams.

Registration
To participate, please register through the NAQT registration system found here. We have a tentative field cap of 16 teams; however, we hope to be able to expand the field if the tournament fills up.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to contact University of Minnesota Quiz Bowl at [email protected]. We hope to see you in April!
