2023 NAQT Michigan State Championship [April 15th, IS-219, Ann Arbor and East Lansing]

Post by Subhamitra Banerjee Roychoudhury »

The quizbowl teams at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, in cooperation with DeWitt High School and the Michigan Quizbowl Coaches Association, are pleased to announce the 2023 Michigan State Quizbowl Championships will take place on Saturday, April 15th, 2023. The event will comprise three separate tournaments, held across two campuses, on the same day.

Teams will be divided into Class A, Class B, and a combined Class C/D division by their MHSAA Classification, using the "Enrollment Total" column found here: https://my.mhsaa.com/portals/0/document ... enroll.pdf

The Class A tournament will be held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The Class B and Class C/D tournaments will be held at Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Eligibility and qualification

All Michigan high school teams who have either:
-- won a tournament or league featuring four or more teams from two or more schools, except for a tournament explicitly restricted to novice or JV teams, or
-- qualified for one of HSNCT, SSNCT, PACE NSC, or the NAC (in the latter case, by explicit qualification rather than receipt of a wildcard bid)
are automatically eligible.

Only one team per school can compete. Teams will require chaperones. We strongly recommend that all participants (including spectators) receive all vaccinations for COVID-19 for which they are medically eligible. However, we will not be enforcing this with a mandate at this time.

Teams who have not fulfilled the qualification requirements are also welcome to register, and will be added to the field if it's not full by the registration deadline (see "Registration" below).

Question set

We'll be using NAQT's IS-219.

Format and rules

These tournaments will use a bracketed round-robin format. Teams will play a round-robin in preliminary pools, will be split into playoff brackets on the basis of their performance, and will play another round-robin (potentially carrying over games from the prelims). A final will be played as necessary.

The tournaments will begin at 9 AM; teams should expect to arrive by 8:30 AM and to play until 5 PM or so.

Games will be untimed and read 20 tossups (and as many bonuses as the teams earn over those tossups). We will skip computational math tossups but not computational math bonuses, in accordance with NAQT's high school nationals format. We will use 5/5/5 timing rules. We will otherwise use NAQT's rules.

Only 6 distinct players per team may play in any given game, with 4 players per team playing at any given time, though there is no actual cap on the number of players allowed on a team's roster.

Prizes

Note: If we get a large enough number of teams signing up in a given division, the prizes for 2nd and 3rd place may be upgraded to trophies. Additionally, if there are fewer than 10 teams in a division, the number of teams receiving awards may be decreased.

For Class A and Class B divisions:

1st Place team for each division will receive a trophy, and a medal for each player (up to 4 players per team)
2nd Place team for each division will receive a plaque, and a medal for each player (up to 4 players per team)
3rd Place team for each division will receive a plaque, and a medal for each player (up to 4 players per team)

For the Class C/D division:

The above will hold true, except that if the 1st Place team is from Class C, then the top ranked team from Class D will also receive a trophy and a medal for each player, and vice versa. If that top ranked team from the non-winning class places in 2nd or 3rd place, then they will receive their class trophy instead of the standard prize for that position.

Additionally, if a prize-winning team has more than 4 players, they can optionally get more than 4 of the individual awards associated with their victory if their team is willing to pay the cost of those extra awards.

For individual awards:

Awards will be given based on a player's points per 20 tossups heard through the preliminary rounds. A player will only be eligible for an individual award if they have heard at least 75% of their team's total tossups heard. The top 5 players will be considered their individual Division's "First Team All-State" players and receive First Team All-State medals. The 6th through 10th ranked players will be considered their individual Division's "Second Team All-State" players and Second Team All-State medals. If there are fewer than 10 teams in a division, then it's possible only First Team All-State awards will be distributed

Fees

Base registration fee: $125
Buzzer discount: -$10 per functioning buzzer system
Staffer discount: -$15 per competent staffer provided

Fees should be paid at the tournament by cash or check. If you choose to pay by check, they should be addressed to "Michigan Academic Competitions" for Class A and "Michigan State Academic Competition Club" for Classes B and C/D.

Registration and deadlines

Fulfilling one of the qualification requirements does not automatically constitute registration. Teams can register using NAQT's registration system here: https://www.naqt.com/registration/field ... t_id=14506 for Class A and here: https://www.naqt.com/registration/field ... t_id=14505 for Classes B and C/D.

The initial field caps will be 24 in Class A and 16 in Class B and Class C/D. The registration deadline is 11:59 PM on Sunday, March 26th. After the deadline, wildcard teams -- who have not fulfilled the qualification requirements but still want to play -- will be added to the field in order of registration if it has not filled.

We are excited to continue the long tradition of the Michigan state championship tournaments, and we look forward to seeing the state's finest teams in Ann Arbor and East Lansing on April 15!
