Sic Semper Trashis in Bristol, VA (4/1/2023)

Post by TusculumPearson »

We are proud to announce and invite registrations for the annual Southwest Virginia Academic Team Alliance (SWATA) trash tournament fundraiser, Sic Semper Trashis 2023, which will be held at Virginia High School in Bristol, Virginia on April 1, 2023.

This will, once more, be a mirror of Bob Kilner’s Ohio Trash tournament, and it remains open to all high schools and trash enthusiasts across the Southeast (and beyond). Proceeds from the tournament will support Southwest Virginia teams making trips to national competitions (HSNCT, SSNCT, PACE NSC).

LOGISTICS
Our host school again is Virginia High School in Bristol, Virginia. The school is located approximately 5 minutes off Interstate 81’s Exit 3 or Exit 5, depending on whether you are coming from the north or south. The school is located at 1200 Long Crescent Drive, Bristol, VA 24201.

Our game plan is to start registration at 7:45 AM and hold a general meeting at 8:30, with a 9:00 AM start time.

There will be a high school-only division as well as an open/college division. If you are a high school student, you are permitted to compete in the open division, but be aware that the piranha in the open division do not care about the age of the meat upon which they will feed.

Per usual, there are no trophies, only CD and DVD prizes. Prizes will be (a) cheap and (b) trashy.

There are eternally rumors of a music game. We will provide information about a music game if and when those rumors are confirmed. (Where have you gone, Jeremy Alexander Tabor...?)

FEES
We are maintaining our tournament philosophy. All fees can be negotiated to an extent, with two tenets in mind:
(A) Particularly for high schools, we want players to be able to play and not have money be an obstacle.
(B) This is a fundraiser for our students. If you are able to pay full price, pay full price. If you feel led to toss some extra coins in the coffer, the funds are going straight to SWVA schools playing nationals.
With those principles in mind, this is our fee structure:

High School Teams (fees unchanged since inception!)
$50 for first team from a high school
$45 for each additional team from same high school
$15 per free agent from a high school
-$10 discount *per Virginia school* that has not played a non-VHSL tournament in the past 5 years
-$10 discount *per Tennessee School* that has not played a non-TV event in the past 5 years

(We can negotiate a similar discount for Kentucky and North Carolina schools that want to join us. Y’all come.)

Open/College Teams (take advantage now, inflation coming for you again soon):
$100 per team
$30 per free agent

Discounts:
-$10 for staff supplied (staffers need to fill out a separate registration: <https://forms.gle/9vnXz1SMMqA74g147>)
-$5 for buzzers supplied

Open/College team minimum: $80. No HS team minimum.

If your high school needs a break on fees in order to compete, please contact the tournament director. If your open team wants a break on fees in order to compete, consider the kids and dig deep.

SET
One more time, it’s Bob Kilner’s Ohio Trash, the set we’ve relied upon since the inception of SST in 2017 to make this tournament what it is. We are incredibly grateful to Bob Kilner and the tireless work he’s put in over the years to provide high-school appropriate pop culture questions for us and other pop culture competitors across the fruited plain.

CONTACT
The returning tournament director for SST 2023 is Chuck Pearson, with the faithful support of coaches and staffers in the region. Contact Pearson through Facebook (https://facebook.com/chuck.pearson) or by email at [email protected].

Host contact is Mr. Noah Ashbrook ([email protected]), with support from Cristal Morales.

REGISTER NOW

DISCLAIMER
Some information is subject to change, if changes occur, they will be posted on this thread.

And, as always, in the words of the genial quizmaster, all decisions of the tournament director are arbitrary, capricious, and final.

Last year’s SST hosted 22 teams and raised $1145 for the national ambitions of Southwest Virginia teams. We’re setting the initial cap for 24 teams this time, and hoping for an even bigger total.

Come and join us.

Bump for field update on February 8.

We are rapidly approaching field cap with substantial interest remaining and the need for support from staffers to make the event work. If you're able to join us to support our fundraising for Southwest Virginia teams, please fill out the staffer registration.

Bump for field update February 9. That was quick; our field is closed.

We will almost certainly reopen the field at some point before April 1. We have odd numbers of teams in both the high school and open fields; we need to even those out. And there is still STRONG interest in the field.

But before we reopen the field, we're going to work on ensuring we can support the field with staff. Please, if you're able to help, fill out the staffer registration.

If you have questions or want on a waiting list, contact Pearson at [email protected].

Bump for field update on February 23.

We're incredibly grateful for additional staffers who have joined the pool. We're still open to additional staffers (there are enough links to the staffing registration up there, I won't add), but we're at a point where we're welcoming additional registrants.

The additional room that we have to operate is TIGHT. There are only two more teams that can join the high school field, period - that field is approaching hard cap. If open teams get in ahead of line, I might be able to take more than two, but that's going to be interesting as well.

So I'm not reopening the registration form freely. Contact me directly ([email protected], or through direct message) if you're interested in joining the field, and I'll open up registration for you, first-come, first-served.

There is a free agent lurking in the open field, and there has been for a bit, and so I am VERY open to free agents signing up open. I am not as open to free agents in the high school pool - if a high school registers, I really want a whole team assembled before you sign up.

As always: my inbox is open to questions.

Bump for field update March 8.

The high school field is closed on 18 teams.

The open division field is on 15 teams and can add one additional team. One of the teams in the open division field is a designated "free agent farm" that is looking for additional teammates.

We remain open to additional staffers. We promise you won't have more fun staffing a quiz tournament in 2023.\

My inbox is still open to inquiries.

Oh, boy, y'all.

Here are the necessary updates with less than a week to go until a pop culture event unlike any other:

FRIDAY NIGHT
There will be a dinner gathering for competitors and staffers coming in from out of town at Mellow Mushroom on US 11 north of Exit 7 at 600 PM; if you're coming, contact Pearson by social media or by email at [email protected]. We don't know when it will end. We also don't know if we might get into other quiz-game hijinks that night (although your tournament director is a notoriously early sleeper).

SATURDAY PARKING AND MEETUP
The listed address of Virginia High School is 1200 Long Crescent Drive; however, mapping directions to 70 Hammack Drive on Google Maps or Apple Maps does a better job of pinpointing the parking lot you’re likely going to want to use.

When you enter Virginia High, as is customary for our events there, we’ll use the cafeteria (straight to your left as you enter) as our registration and gathering place.

REGISTRATION AND SCHEDULE
We are using the full extent of Virginia High's facilities - supporting 18 teams in the high school bracket and 16 teams in the open bracket, an astounding 17 game rooms without byes. There is a single "free agent farm" that has two players registered and has room for a couple of others - contact Pearson directly if you're interested in supporting the free agent farm. Otherwise, we're ready to roll.

(We didn't even have to shake trees very hard for staff! The support provided to this event has been unlike anything I've experienced in quizbowl. We're grateful to the staffing support and we will call them by name when the time comes.)

The current status of the schedule, with preliminary ruleset, can be found at:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

As is traditional for SST, doors open at 7:45 AM. General meeting at 8:30 AM. Target game starting at 9:00.

Lunch WILL be after 5 rounds, primarily because of the need to reseed the high school bracket. There will be a break for open teams after Round 7, because of the reseeding necessary there.

Everybody's guaranteed NINE rounds - you're getting your money's worth! (We're not even trying a music game this year because we're wanting to make sure the games go efficiently. We miss you, Jeremy Alexander Tabor.)

Any other questions - hit me through the social media channels or email at [email protected].

LUNCH
Again, with 34 teams, there's no way we can logistically provide lunch onsite, with apologies to the high school teams who prefer that way of operation. Bristol's fast food emporiums along US 11 and I-81 (around Exits 5 and 7) are quite open to you. Save the fancy sit-downs for dinner.

ADDITIONAL DISCLAIMERS
The tournament director has gone over his schedules with the proverbial fine-toothed comb (now watch there be an error in them) and has made sure the tournament structure can run efficiently during the day.

But there are 34 teams attending. Something IS going to go wrong. We'll make your day as compact as possible, but things may well happen that are beyond everybody's control and we will just have to roll with it. Come to enjoy the good company and we'll make sure the games are the best they can be.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Message from our intrepid host, Noah Ashbrook:

"Small heads up for our traveling teams: Bristol City has gone through some street number changes. Your GPS may still have Virginia High listed as 1200 Long Crescent Drive but the NEW address is 650 Long Crescent Drive.

"Make sure you know you're going to the correct spot.

"Also, FWIW, here’s a bad quality map of VHS campus that shows parking areas in green. Entrances to the building are marked with a red x.

"I say this because the gym is going to be used tomorrow and parking on that side of the building will be not-optimal. I did not find out about that gym event until 8:30 this morning."
