MAKEMAKE National Mirror (SUNDAY, 3/12, Online)

Post by komododragon655 »

I am excited to announce the MAKEMAKE National Mirror (MNM for short), an online middle school tournament on Sunday, March 12th, 2023. This is the successor to the CERES National Mirror run last year.

We will be using MAKEMAKE, the third edition of an annual middle school set head edited by Conor Thompson.

I, Andrew Gao (Chenery), and Cindy Gao (Belmont) will be directing this event.

This tournament will be open to all middle school teams. Teams may not consist of players from different schools, and all players must be in the 8th grade or younger. New teams will be encouraged to play a local mirror, this mirror is specifically intended for strong middle school teams and teams without a nearby MAKEMAKE mirror.

Rules
Rosters are capped at 6 players, and only 4 players may play at one time. Teams with more than six players will be asked to register another team. Players must follow NAQT gameplay rules (with timing + other small modifications) and active players must show TWO HANDS on camera if they don’t have an exemption. Any suspicions of cheating will be investigated and may be reported to quizbowl organizations.

Format
We will have one division for this tournament. The field is capped at 14 teams. Teams will be guaranteed 8 games. We will use 20 tossups and 20 three-part-bonuses per untimed round. 15-point powers and negative-5-point negs are in play. There will be no computational math.

Games will be played on Discord, with Buzzin.live for buzzing. Each individual player must have their own Discord account to join the tournament server. Making an account can be done so here.

Registration
Register teams using this form. Registration closes on March 9th at 11:59 PM EST. Outside staffers will be paid $25 for staffing the whole tournament and may sign up here. Staffers will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis until we have enough staff.

Fees
Base Fee: $70 per team
Shorthanded (1-2 players) discount: -$20
Staff Discount: -$25
There will be a minimum fee of $0 per school. Teams who cancel after March 7th at 11:59 PM EST must pay the full fee, barring extenuating circumstances.

Payment details will be sent after registration.

Stats
Team and individual stats will be posted on hsquizbowl.com within 24 hours of the end of the tournament. We will have live stats up to the game on a Google Sheet, and category and subcategory stats.

Misconduct
Anyone involved with the tournament, including but not limited to: coaches, players, staff, tournament directors, and spectators must adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct. Misconduct can be reported to this form and/or sent to [email protected].

Contact
Please direct any questions to [email protected]. We hope to see your team here!

We are now at 13 teams with the tournament coming up this Sunday- we will try to hit our field cap of 16 teams, so registrations are still welcome: https://forms.gle/ECFnNhSYjSWM6WhR8. We are also looking for staff- sign up here: https://forms.gle/QevdLvX7gushQZFZ7.

Registered teams will receive a preliminary logistics email within the hour. I hope I see everyone interested in this tournament on Sunday!

This tournament ran smoothly yesterday! I'd like to thank all 16 teams who came out on their lovely Sunday to play the tournament- we hope you all had fun.

I'd also like to thank Cindy Gao, my co-TD for this tournament for staffing, handling protests, and doing so much more. Conor Thompson helped us resolve protests and more importantly, let us use his fantastic set MAKEMAKE for this tournament. Our staff were all amazing, please give thanks to: Arnav Lahoti, Claire Chan, Arin Bhandari, Ansel Lollar, Aditya Khambekar, Jarrett Holmes, Tony Liang, and Bryce Cruise.

Cooper Middle School (from Virginia) won the tournament without the need for a final by going 3-0 in playoffs and undefeated throughout the day. Middlesex A, Hopkins, and Sycamore tied for second place. Stats can be found here. Category stats are here.

Our top five scorers (all above 70 PPG!) were:
1. Evan Ting (7) [Sycamore], 134.50 PPG
2. Sreekar Vajjha (8) [Classen SAS], 128.00 PPG
3. Aiden Younessian (8) [Middlesex A] 92.00 PPG
4. Haughton Neppl (8) [Cooper], 77.00 PPG
5. Eshaan Sombhatta (8) [Cooper], 73.50 PPG
