Carmel Greyhound Invitational (3/18, IS-220A, Carmel, IN)

Post by jseigel »

General:
The Carmel Quiz Bowl Team is excited to announce the Carmel Greyhound Invitational (CGI): a regular-season quiz bowl tournament for high-school teams. This tournament will be held in-person at Carmel High School on March 18, 2023. I, Jordan Seigel, along with Archit Kalra, will be tournament directors for this event. For now, we will maintain a tentative cap at 12 teams. However, if there is enough interest, we are open to expanding the field to additional teams.

This tournament will run on IS-220A, an introductory high school set meant to not be too challenging for new teams. Teams consist of four players (more can rotate in and out as substitutions, maximum of 6 players on one team). All players on a team must be from the same school; we will not accept any chimera teams.

Games will consist of two 10-tossup halves, with 3-part bonuses. There will be 15-point powers for early answers and 5-point negs for incorrect answers before the end of a tossup. There are no bounce backs on bonuses. We can guarantee 8 rounds for each team.

Registration:
Registration for CGI will take place through NAQT.
https://www.naqt.com/registration/field ... t_id=14375

If you have any questions or need any assistance, email [email protected], and we will get back to you as soon as possible. The finalized schedule will be sent out closer to the date, but a rough duration would be from 8:30 AM to sometime around 4 PM Eastern Time, with included lunch break. Registration closes on March 12, 2023.

We will not be serving lunch at the school for this tournament; there are numerous restaurants nearby, including McDonalds, Popeyes, and others, both across the street from the school and on Carmel Drive.

Eligibility:
This tournament is primarily aimed toward Indiana high schools. High schools outside of Indiana can register, but they will be waitlisted, and will not formally be accepted until registration is closed. Waitlisted schools will be admitted in order of registration, and based on field size.

Schools may submit more than one team to this tournament. If you wish to submit multiple teams, please designate each team by decreasing strength with a letter, starting with A. For example, if Carmel High School were to submit 3 teams, we would expect their strongest team to be named Carmel A, the second-strongest to be Carmel B, and the third-strongest to be Carmel C.

Fees and Discounts:
Registration: $80 per team, $70 for each additional team
-$5 from overall registration fees for each working buzzer set with at least 8 working buzzers.
-$5 per 100 miles traveled one-way. Distance decided via Google Maps.
-$20 New to quiz bowl discount (has never played pyramidal quiz bowl or has not played pyramidal quiz bowl since 3/5/2019)
Minimum fee of $50.

Payment:
Payment must be made by cash, accepted the day of the tournament, or by a check made out to the "Carmel High School Quiz Bowl Team." We will send an invoice with instructions to each team that registers. Please contact us if this system does not work for you.

If CGI sounds of interest to you or your team, don’t hesitate to sign up. For any further questions, please reach out to us at [email protected]. Thank you for your interest, and happy buzzing!

So far, our in-person CGI tournament has seen interest from multiple Indiana teams as well as out-of-state teams from as far away as Florida.

We are excited to see the interest in our tournament which will reinvigorate Indiana quiz bowl. We welcome all teams from across the country to come compete at our tournament to help us put Indiana on the map as a quiz bowl state.

Current interested teams include:
Huntington North High School (IN)
Saint Joseph High School (IN)
Pensacola High School (FL)

Registration will close on 3/12. Make sure to fill out the NAQT registration linked above to mark your interest.

If you have any questions, feel free to email us at [email protected].

We're about a month out from CGI, and the field looks great so far!

We currently have 12 teams registered, representing 8 schools from around Indiana. We have now lifted the field cap to 16.

The field can be viewed here: https://www.naqt.com/registration/field ... t_id=14375

As a reminder, teams from any state can register to compete.

We look forward to seeing you all this March!

Also, for any of you interested in an online tournament, make sure to check out BAGS to face teams from around the nation!
