Lehigh Valley Open III - October 29th (IS 214A)

Post by Antrobus63 »

After a five-year hiatus, competitive quiz bowl returns to the Lehigh Valley!

The Lehigh Valley Open III will take place at Moravian Academy on Saturday October 29th, 2022. The school (4313 Green Pond Rd, Bethlehem, PA 18020) is easily reached by Routes 22, 33, and 78.

QUESTION SET: NAQT Introductory Set 214A.

FORMAT: Our field cap is 30 teams. We may expand the field if we are assured of having enough readers. There will be Open (experienced) and Novice divisions. We can guarantee at least eight rounds to everyone, but will probably have ten.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:
Team fees: $80 for the first team, $65 for each subsequent team. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school, though schools with three or more teams must bring at least one experienced reader.
Buzzer discount: $10 off school's total fee for each fully functional system; the control box and eight activators must all work.
Staff discount: $10 off for each experienced reader. Schools that bring three or more teams must provide at least one experienced reader.
Minimum team fee: $50

To Register: Use the NAQT Registration System: https://www.naqt.com/schedule/

AWARDS: Trophies will be awarded to the top two teams in the Open Division. The top ten scoring individuals after the preliminary rounds will get book prizes.

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: Each team will consist of 1-6 players; up to four students may play at one time. If a school brings more than six players, it must register a second team. Individual teams can substitute players between games, or at halftime of each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day; there is no switching between teams.

FOOD: Concessions will be available in the morning and at lunch. Teams can order pizza through Moravian, which prefers that all teams remain on campus for the duration of the tournament: there is more than one event occurring on campus that day. If pizza isn’t your thing, we encourage you to pack a lunch.

NATIONAL TOURNAMENT QUALIFICATION: This tournament is an NAQT qualifier for both SSNCT and HSNCT: the top 15% (plus ties; rounded up) of the field will qualify for the HSNCT in Atlanta, GA. More details about HSNCT qualification can be found here: HSNCT qualification Eligible schools may qualify for SSNCT in Chicago, IL: SSNCT Qualification Our tournament is also a PACE gold qualifier, so the top 20% of the field will qualify for the 2023 PACE-NSC tournament.

The co-sponsors of the event are Kevin Ferdinand and Peter Schmidt, coaches of Moravian’s Academic Team and History Bowl team, respectively. If you have any questions, feel free to contact [email protected].

Field List (teams/buzzers/staffers):
Berwick (3/1/1)
Central Catholic (3/0/1)
Downingtown STEM (1/0/0)
Edison (1/1/0)
Emmaus (1/2/0)
Friends Select (2/2/1)
Germantown Friends (1/2/1)
Great Valley (4/2/1)
Manheim Twp (3/0/0)
Moravian Academy (1/2/1)
State College (2/2/1)
Wallenpaupack (2/3/1)
WC Henderson (4/0/2)

Total: (28/18/11) - Last updated on 10/16.

Note: We have arranged for several, non-HS staffers... but schools with three or more teams must still provide staffers or drop a team. Also, the field cap will probably be raised, so schools are encouraged to join the waitlist.

Congratulations to Edison (NJ), which defeated Great Valley A to win the championship.

Stats are all neatened up now. You can find the Varsity here https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/7 ... ll_rounds/, and JV here https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/7 ... ll_rounds/.

Thank you to all of the coaches, school staffers, parents and players who came out to Moravian Academy yesterday. My special gratitude to these non-affiliated staffers who gave up their Saturday to come out and help—Kevin DeVizia, Eddie Fuehrer, Ben Herman, Antonio Jimenez, Colton Sanden and Alex Schmidt—as well as to these Moravian Academy folks who helped us prepare for the first tournament ever at the school: Dan Axford, Kevin Ferdinand, Dr. Jeff Lawlis, Scott McClary, and Katherine Vicic. Hopefully, this will be the first of many.
