From the stats boy on the day, honors and gratitude following yesterday’s Secret City Classic, East Tennessee Quizbowl’s fall event contested at Roane State Community College - Oak Ridge:

Congratulations to Gate City (VA) B (Connor Ketron, Garrett Wallace, Mariam Millichamp, Paige Scott) for their 8-1 record and championship win, clinching with a 380-220 result over Gallatin in the final round. Congratulations also to Connor Ketron for his tournament-leading 96.1 points per game, and Gate City B converted a tournament-leading 22.2 points per bonus - a well-earned victory.

Gallatin (an all-JV entry of Andrew Wright, Daniel McKinness and Marley McDaniel) finished second on 7-2. Gatlinburg-Pittman (Michael Gallup, Mara Klein, Chandler Swarner, Diya Patel, Mason Wang, and Kai Perez) blew through the field with a 6-0 start and handed Gate City B their only loss before fading at the end to finish 7-2; Gallatin finishes ahead of Gatlinburg-Pittman based on their head-to-head result.

We are yet to certify this tournament with PACE, but because we got nine matches of round-robin play in we believe we will be a Platinum tournament and all three podium-placers will have a PACE National Scholastic Championship qualification.

Top ten individuals are (in order) Ketron of Gate City B, Brooke Swallows of Cookeville B, Michael Gallup of Gatlinburg-Pittman, Andrew Wright of Gallatin, Ian Stapleton of Gate City A, Jackson Ragland of Cookeville A, Logan Carroll of Midway, Connor Baggett of Cookeville A, Elizabeth Millichamp of Gate City C, and Mara Klein of Gatlinburg-Pittman. Woman of quizbowl were well represented among the top scorers, but the traditional “Title IX” award went to Ananya Madduri of Maryville Junior by acclamation, because playing a tournament solo is Quizbowl’s final exam, and Madduri was a champ for patiently putting herself to the test again and again.

It was a wild day, and we saw performances worthy of note up and down the standings. The top three don’t describe the quality of person and player at this tournament, and it was a quality return for our annual event.

We always have to offer thanks to our staff. Laticia LaFollette of Gatlinburg-Pittman read her first match in live competition yesterday, and I look forward to her reading again. Circuit alums Dylan Cox (of Gate City) and William Barnes (of Gallatin) joined us, as well as coaches Sarah Whisenhunt and Mary Alice McLellan (of Gate City). First time scorekeeper Jamie Rollins now has a fan club.

I can’t say enough about Dren Rollins’ passion for this game, and for communicating what the game has personally meant to him to the next generation of players. There were a couple of points yesterday when I caught myself finishing Dren’s lines and commenting on our respective handwriting and having the flashes of realization that we’ve been doing this a very long time - dating back to our days learning at the side of the genial quizmaster, Charlie Steinhice - and bringing this tournament back after a couple of years away was as natural as breathing.

I’m grateful every day for the community around this game in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Thanks to all of you who make this community so fulfilling.
