CO Trash 2022 (August 7, 2022, Evanston)

Post by theMoMA »

This is your clean new announcement for CO Trash 2022, to be played the day after this summer's Chicago Open.

When

Sunday, August 7, 2022, with check-in around 8:30am, brief announcements just before 9:00am, and games starting shortly thereafter. For those planning travel, we are expecting the tournament's finals series (if necessary) to begin around 6pm. (This assumes 40 minutes per round, for 12 rounds, and a 1-hour lunch break.)

Where

The Tech building on the Northwestern University campus in Evanston, Illinois. Teams should arrive at the lecture hall LR2 for check-in between 8:30 and 8:45, with announcements shortly before nine, and gameplay starting at nine.

Cost

$50 per person. You should pay us via PayPal or Venmo before the tournament begins, and we'll include logistics for that later.

-$20 discount per *working* buzzer (-$5 per buzzer per player if you choose to spread it across all players on your team). Minimum entry fee of $30 per player, but you can spread discounts for multiple buzzers across teammates.

Field size

18 teams.

Format

Two prelim brackets of nine teams into three playoff brackets of six teams. 8 official games in 9 rounds (prelims), with the bye game played as a scrimmage. 3 playoff games for each team (3 games carry over from the prelim bracket). 11 official games in 12 rounds, with (possibly advantaged) finals if necessary.

Distribution and writers

Per packet, the distribution will be roughly:

4/4 Sports: 1/1 football; 1/1 baseball; 1/1 basketball; 1/1 other
4/4 Film: 1/1 pre-1980s; 2/1 or 1/2 1980s and 90s; 2/1 or 1/2 2000s with a mix of genres
4/4 TV: .5/.5 pre-1990; 1/1 1990s; 2.5/2.5 2000 or later with a mix of genres
4/4 Music: 1/1 rock; 1/1 pop; 1/1 rap, R&B, soul; 1/1 other or more of big three with a mix of times
1.5/1.5 video games
1/1 comics/trash lit
1.5/1.5 other

At our discretion, "1990s" may include some early-2000s content as well.

The writers are Rob Carson, Carsten Gehring, Andrew Hart, and NOT Cory Haala.

Staffing

If you're interested in staffing, please fill out this form. Staffers will receive $40 plus a free lunch ($20 + lunch for half-day staffers, if we need them).

Team formation and registration

The 2020 event had a team formation spreadsheet and a registration process (see the old thread for links). To avoid the trouble of untangling those old and possibly outdated sheets, we're starting over.

Registration is now open. You may not register your team if you don't have a full four-player roster. If interest exceeds the final field cap, we will prioritize registrations by (1) teams that have at least one player who registered for CO Trash 2020, (2) teams that have at least one player who is playing, staffing, or editing CO proper, and (3) everyone else (ordered by registration date within each group). We hope we'll be able to accommodate everyone who wants to play, and we should be able to.

Free agents can use the team formation sheet (linked below) to find a team.

Team formation sheet (does NOT register your team officially): here.

Registration form: here.

Mirrors

Email me at [email protected] if you would like to mirror this set on or after the weekend of August 6. We will likely hold an online mirror sometime in August or September, as well.

Editorial stance toward Randy Wittman

The editors of this tournament hereby denounce the NBA coaching of Randy Wittman (and include a damnatio against "S.B.," for good measure). May the Wizards prosper in the Unseld era.

What kinds of answer lines are in this tournament? Be specific.

In seriousness, I would like perhaps an updated field list? I registered my team some time ago and really never heard any confirmation.

I've posted an updated field at the bottom of the announcement. Someone registered two separate rosters, so I've emailed for clarification on that. If you have amendments to your roster, please email me at [email protected] instead of submitting a whole new registration.

We would certainly appreciate more registrations, so please work on getting your teams formed and registered. (The team formation sheet is here.)

Additionally, we need staffers. Please fill out this form if you're interested in staffing. Pay is $40 plus lunch for all staffers.

We have 15 teams registered and a 16th forming, with enough free agents listed to fill out most of 2-3 more teams. Because of this, unless we get a huge burst of interest in the next few days, we're targeting a final field size of 20, which offers clean 12-round + finals formats and has reasonable backup formats if there are fewer teams because of cancellations.

We'd appreciate your help spreading the word and getting together enough teams to make the 20-team CO Trash work with enough lead time that we can get the logistics nailed down. If you're planning to register but haven't gotten around to it yet, please register; if you're a free agent, please try to get your team in order in the next few days; if you're already registered but know someone who will be at CO weekend and might want to play, please encourage them to play; and if you're interested in staffing, please sign up to staff!

We have 17 teams, and the 18th is mostly together. Registration remains open, but only if we can get two additional, mostly full teams by the end of the day tomorrow.

If we're at 18, we'll have prelim brackets of 9 (eight games in nine rounds, with the bye (ninth) game played as a scrimmage between the two teams on bye), followed by three playoff pools of 6 (three games in three rounds, with the games involving teams that advance together carrying over), followed by finals if necessary.

This will be 11 official games in 12 rounds, and we expect that a finals series (if necessary) would begin around 6pm (with 40-minute rounds and a 1-hour lunch break).

The field is now closed; we will have 18 teams with the schedule described above.

If any free agents would like to put their names as standby players, in case there are players who aren't able to play on Sunday, you may do so on the team formation sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0.

Very excited to play CO trash. A few questions:

-What building & room will sign in be located on Sunday?
-What is the mask policy for CO Trash?

Thanks!

It's in the Tech building (same one as regular CO). We'll have the same mask policy as regular CO (everyone but moderators/people eating).

Further logistics (also in the main post): The tournament will be in the Tech building on the Northwestern University campus in Evanston, Illinois. Teams should arrive at the lecture hall LR2 for check-in between 8:30 and 8:45, with announcements shortly before nine, and gameplay starting at nine.

There will be 12 rounds between prelims and playoffs, and teams will play 11 official games and 1 bye (prelim) game in those rounds. The three playoff pools will consist of 6 teams each, and three games will carry over. Teams will be ranked within their playoff brackets, and if there is a need for an advantaged or one-game final in the top bracket, it will be played.

We expect the finals series to begin around 6pm, if necessary. (This assumes a 9am start, 40 minutes per round over 12 rounds, and an hour break for lunch.)

Staff should arrive at 8:30.

The Great Will Be Defeated By the Excellent (Yogesh Raut, Matt Lafer, Conor Thompson, and Tony Chen) beat The Great Quizbowl Fire of 2014 (Matt Weiner, Erik Nelson, Chris Ray, and John Lawrence) 335-325 in a thrilling one-game final. We'll have full/final stats up in the next week.

Thank you so much to everyone who played and staffed! Thank you also to my co-writers Andrew and Carsten, and most of all thank you to not Cory Haala. We couldn't not do it without you.

Thanks for a very enjoyable tournament. I like trash tournaments that have a distinctive feel, and this certainly did, and it was also fun answering questions on topics that will probably never come up anywhere else.

Thanks to everyone who played CO Trash last weekend! As always, we were happy to see all of the great buzzes and thrilling games.

If you missed CO and want to get in on the fun, the tournament remains available for physical mirrors; please email [email protected] if you'd like to set up a mirror. We will host an online mirror sometime in the fall, with an announcement likely in early September after we determine if there will be additional in-person mirrors.
