JAVA 2022: JAVASCRIPT

Post by jaimiec »

JAVA 2022: JAVASCRIPT (JAVA Sequel Containing Really Interesting Pretty Things)

This is an announcement for JAVA 2022, an online visual arts and trash tournament which will be run sometime in May 2022, probably on Discord.

EDIT: As it's the end of May, and this tournament is only 50% completed, I anticipate playing it instead sometime in August or September.

The distribution will be very similar to JAVA 2021:

4 "whimsical commonlinks": Answerlines at the common-knowledge level, but with extremely varied sources from mostly art, a little trash. Many of these are "description acceptable."
4 "mainstream art": Mostly commonlinks, but more normal than the last section. Slightly outre answerlines that could probably be tossed up at ACF Regionals, certainly at ACF Nationals, without too much aggravation.
4 "hard artists": Artists I want to include in tournaments but could never include at regular difficulty. Nats - CO plus.
3 "vicarious tourism": Cool places to visit. Common knowledge by the end.
5 "secretly not art at all": Pretending to be art, but may actually be: trash, literature, history, archaeology, or science. (Or things that could be the subject of long and contentious debate whether they're art or one of the above). Trash here mostly means sci-fi movies or TV.

Disclaimer: this is a vanity tournament, and is very whimsical and niche. See JAVA 2021, which featured tossups on Bob Ross, Rachel Talalay, and "big fish eating little fish" as a van der Heyden and Phantom Menace mashup. You know what you are signing up for.

The vast majority of the art is 20th century Western art (probably 1-2 non-Western, 2-3 non-20th-century art per packet). Painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, film, and fashion all make an appearance in art subgenres. Fashion and theater/opera performance show up more than last year, for whatever reason.

Do you still anticipate hosting one large online mirror like with JAVA or do you plan on having numerous, smaller, in-person mirrors?

I anticipate holding one large online mirror like with JAVA. Ping me if you're interested in holding another mirror (like the Canadian one last year).

I would be delighted to hold an in-person mirror, but since I'm no longer affiliated with a university and my tiny studio apartment is possibly not ideal quizbowl-hosting space, I don't really have any way to do that. If anyone in the Boston area would be able to arrange some room rental and is interested in helping me run an in-person mirror, please reach out! I'd be excited to make that happen.

Any movement on announcing the online mirror? Last year's JAVA was my favorite event of the season! I'm very much looking forward to playing its sequel.

How many packets are there, and what's the general plan for the tournament's timing? I'm planning on (and looking forward to) playing, but I'd like to know in advance how strict I'll have to be with my scheduling to make it work.

I asked on Discord as well, but it would be great to receive some info on the logistics of the tournament. Thanks!

I'm still trying to scrounge up more moderators. If I can, the format will be doubles - if I can't, I'll ask people to merge teams. This will be finalized and an email sent out by 10 EST tonight.

There are 8 packets and I'm planning to begin at 12 PM tomorrow - so this should not go past 6 PM.

JAVASCRIPT will be held tomorrow, May 6th. The opening meeting will be at 12 PM, and rounds will start at 12:15. The tournament is 8 rounds of visual packets. There are 10 doubles teams; the bracket will be an incomplete round robin. Ties will be broken by PPG (but not broken if there are ties beyond that.) We will hopefully finish by 6 PM.

The brackets are here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0

Please Venmo $5 per team @Jaimie-Carlson.

The tournament will be run on Discord (link sent in logistics email).
