VCU would like to claim dates for its usual three high school tournaments. We will do our best to keep to these dates, though it is possible that as we negotiate other tournaments and the college calendar, there will be some movement before formal announcements are made.

As in the past, we would like to host our fall and winter tournaments on the last Saturday in October and the first Saturday in December, respectively. In 2022 this will be October 29 and December 3.

The winter tournament on 12/3/22 will be open to all interested participants and run on a regular tossup/bonus set. I've put in a request for an NAQT IS set and we'll use one if available, otherwise it will be a mirror of some other "housewrite" set at similar difficulty. Pending staff availability and enough interested teams in each group to make it viable, we would like to split this tournament into two or more divisions based on team experience (at minimum, a "nationally competitive" and "standard" division and possibly JV, novice, etc as well).

The fall tournament on 10/29/22 will possibly be a return of the Battle of the Brains-style event using a tossup-heavy format derived from NAQT A sets. I'm waiting to hear back from NAQT about question availability here as well as a few other factors. If we have to limit the field here due to more interest than we can handle then the first restriction will be limiting this event to Virginia schools only. I hope to have all the details of this finalized by the start of the school year.

We have previously hosted the Season Finale Tournament on either the last weekend in April or the first weekend in May. We are increasingly receiving feedback that the late date is causing otherwise interested teams to avoid participating due to running into the AP exam period, and that more Virginia schools than in the past are attending SSNCT and NHBB nationals, meaning we need to avoid conflicts with those tournaments. Therefore, we would like to move the SFT date up to the weekend of April 22 April 15. This depends on avoiding conflicts with as-yet-unannounced events such as ACF Nationals which compete for our staffers as well as other high school tournaments, so we may not be able to confirm this date for a little while. SFT usually runs a non-NAQT "housewrite mirror" question set and likely will do so again. We do not anticipate any restrictions on who may enter, and we will certainly consider running multiple divisions if the interest is there.

Seeing that ACF Fall is scheduled for October 15, we now plan to host Cavalier Classic on September 24. I have edited the original post to reflect this. We will have an independent thread for the tournament up soon.

The calendar has been updated to include key VHSL dates for the year.

When planning tournaments, I suggest taking this message from Matt Beeken into account:

VCU will be using the IQBT fall (#1) and spring (#2) sets for our October 29 and April 22 April 15 tournaments. These are regular tossup/bonus format sets at ordinary high school difficulty. We were not able to make the BoB-style tournament work for this year but we will continue to look into options for running it in the future. Information on novice divisions etc. at each tournament will be posted with the specific tournament announcements shortly.

CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL in Ellicott City, Maryland will be hosting its fall tournament on Saturday, October 15, 2022. We will be using the NAQT IS-212A set. As in prior years, we are planning to have a STANDARD field composed of HIGH SCHOOL teams of ANY AGE OR GRADE looking to have fun and NOT compete for a national tournament berth at HSNCT or PACE and a TOURNAMENT field composed of experienced teams looking for high-speed competition and national tournament qualifications. The STANDARD field will have its own trophies but standard teams will not be eligible for the NAQT and PACE championship tournaments. Obviously, high school teams can elect to participate in the TOURNAMENT field regardless of players' age and experience, but we may insist that top level teams (in our estimation) must play in the tournament field. We are using this format in order to avoid the 660 to 10 scores in mismatched contests that are frustrating for all involved. DIFFERENT THIS YEAR, we are not accepting middle school/elementary school teams at this time to allow all high school teams priority. There will be no separate middle school division at the Centennial Invitational. For those who want a Middle/Elementary Tournament only, please see our post in the Middle School Forum for our tournament 3 weeks later November 5 at nearby Burleigh Manor Middle School.

As a coordinator for the hyper-local Southwest Virginia Academic Team Alliance (SWATA), we’re pleased to announce our tournament dates for our 2022-2023 restart:

State Line Showdown 2022
November 5 at (Bristol) Virginia High School
Mirroring SANDS (novice difficulty)
Site contact: Noah Ashbrook <[email protected]>

Academon Invitational 2022
December 3 at Castlewood High School
Mirroring IQBT Regular Season #1 (regular difficulty)
Site contact: Brittany Hale <[email protected]>

Tornado Invitational 2022
January 7 at Richlands High School
Mirroring NAQT IS-215 (regular difficulty)
Site contact: Chris Hale <[email protected]>

We are considering one additional academic tournament date in the spring following completion of the VHSL tournament season, and we are enthusiastically awaiting the return of the Sic Semper Trashis pop-culture fundraising event in late March or early April, supporting teams participating in SWATA tournaments and their pursuit of national competition.

A reminder that the SWATA footprint is limited to the following counties/independent cities:
Bland County, city of Bristol, Buchanan County, Carroll County, Dickenson County, city of Galax, Giles County, Grayson County, Lee County, city of Norton, Russell County, Scott County, Smyth County, Tazewell County, Washington County, Wise County, Wythe County.

Schools outside of these counties/independent cities asking to participate in these tournaments will only be considered on a case-by-case basis, and the bias will be towards keeping participation limited to the SWATA footprint.

Please feel free to contact each site contact or myself <[email protected]> with any questions.

The hyper-local Southwest Virginia Academic Team Alliance (SWATA) is announcing two additional dates for its 2022-2023 tournament calendar.

On March 18, we will contest the first-ever SWATA Solo Challenge, an individual players' championship for players attending schools in the SWATA footprint, at Gate City High School. (Reminder that the SWATA footprint is limited to the following counties/independent cities: Bland County, city of Bristol, Buchanan County, Carroll County, Dickenson County, city of Galax, Giles County, Grayson County, Lee County, city of Norton, Russell County, Scott County, Smyth County, Tazewell County, Washington County, Wise County, Wythe County.) This event will mirror Reinstein Quizbowl's Scobol Solo set. Site contact for SWATA Solo Challenge is SWATA stalwart Sarah Whisenhunt <[email protected]>.

On April 1, we will throw open the doors and welcome the wider region to our sixth (!) offering of Sic Semper Trashis, the SWATA annual pop-culture fundraising event supporting SWATA teams competing at national championships. This event continues to be offered at Virginia High School in Bristol. We will advertise Sic Semper Trashis with a separate post on the Trash forum, but the event is open to high school and collegiate/open teams from within and outside of the SWATA footprint. It will mirror Bob Kilner's Ohio Trash, as it has since its inception. Site contact for Sic Semper Trashis is the ever-faithful Noah Ashbrook <[email protected]>.

As always, for general questions about SWATA, please feel free to contact me <[email protected]> with questions.

So it's been a few years since our team over at QOHS was competitive. And most of the events in our area had devolved into four magnet schools bringing 5 teams each and weren't that fun. Anyway, as our team begins to get good again (I think...I hope) I signed on here and onto NAQT to find some tournaments for my squad to play in this spring...and there's nothing! I guess the question I'm asking is: Is there somewhere else that I should be looking that I don't know about since we haven't competed in a few years? Or, am I looking in the right places, but no one hosts tournaments anymore? Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Josh,

I'm glad to hear that your team is getting back into quizbowl. Unfortunately, a lot of area tournaments that disappeared during the COVID pandemic have not returned for a variety of reasons. At my institution in particular, it is very difficult to reserve rooms, oftentimes restricting us to hosting just one tournament a semester. The University of Virignia will not be hosting a high school tournament this semester, however, I would encourage you to reach out to Matt Weiner (mattweiner.vcu AT gmail DOT com), he has the most up-to-date information regarding tournaments in the circuit. If your team is willing to make the trek down the the Roanoke/Blacksburg area, I would suggest reaching out to Matt Beeken (mbeeken AT mcps DOT org).

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or would like any resources that have come about in the last several years. I can be reached at vef2jj AT virginia DOT edu.

The larger, more active clubs in MCPS often find it very difficult to reserve rooms. At Richard Montgomery and Winston Churchill, weekends are almost completely booked by local Chinese schools, and the administration is not very supportive of running quiz bowl tournaments at Montgomery Blair. In addition, MCPS charges an hourly rate for renting out classrooms, meaning that it's very difficult to just break even on hosting a tournament. JHU and Centennial typically host tournaments in the spring, but there haven't been any announcements for them yet, so I do not know if they are happening.

If playing online isn't an issue for your team, Carmel is hosting a tournament (linked here) on IS-215, a regular difficulty set.

In the absence of a 2023-2024 DC Metro Claim Date as yet, Centennial High School wants to announce our Fall Tournament on Sunday October 1 using an NAQT A set. As in the past, there will be an competitive division for tournament qualification and a standard division for teams hoping to avoid the most competitive teams.
More details will follow when we post onto the official 2023-2024 DC Metro Date Claim
