2022 South Warren Spartan Open - January 15, 2022

Post by Scottietodd »

Hello,

I am pleased to announce the Spartan Open, to be held at South Warren High School in Bowling Green Kentucky on Saturday, January 15th.

The Spartan Open will feature a championship division using NAQT IS-208 and a Standard Division using IS - 209a. Only teams which play in the championship division may qualify for the HSNCT or SSNCT.

The objective of the Spartan is to promote quiz bowl in the greater Bowling Green area, and as such, we have an unusual fee structure.

For teams playing in the championship division, the fee is $75 per team with one free team placement into the standard division. For instance, if a school wished to place four teams into the Spartan, with two in the championship and two in the standard divisions respectively, the fee would be $150 (discounts aside) for the A and B team, with C and D playing for free.

Teams may receive a $10 discount per buzzer system per paying team, with a $5 discount for non-paying teams.

Teams are limited to two teams per division with a maximum of four teams total.

For our new or novice teams who are not ready for the championship division, the fee for the first team in the standard division would be $50 and $25 for each additional team.

Game play for the Spartan will include 20 tossups with three part bonuses that will bounce back. The championship division will include powers and negs while the standard division will include powers but not negs.

While the tournament is promoting new teams and South Warren is relatively new to quiz bowl themselves, Todd Garrison (me), the tournament director, is very experienced with organizing and hosting (see the Scottie :)

Both divisions, championship and standard, will consist of preliminary rounds consisting of pool play followed by some type of playoffs using pool play in the afternoon. The standard division may play less rounds, as we also expect to be training staff new to quiz bowl as well.

Registration for the Spartan will be done through the naqt registration system here:
https://www.naqt.com/registration/fees. ... t_id=12531 and you can request an invoice using the system.

While things are improving nation-wide and the Spartan does not take place until January, staff and teams should be prepared to be masked and to follow current guidelines.

We are capping this event at 36 total teams. Whether this falls out as 18 championship 18 standard, 12 championship and 24 standard, etc... will be determined, but 36 is a hard cap for total teams.

Contact Todd Garrison at [email protected] or at (270) 308-5847 with any questions.
