Wolfie Bowl Online Tournament (August 1, 2020) [EXPANSION]
Wolfie Bowl Online Tournament (August 1, 2020) [EXPANSION]
Greetings! Hope everyone is staying healthy! The Stony Brook University Quiz Bowl team in New York is pleased to announce our first ever tournament!
Date and Time
The tournament will take place over Discord on August 1, 2020 and begin at 10:00 am Eastern Standard Time. It will end at around 4:00 pm EST.
Sign in, on the day of the tournament, will begin 9:00 am EST. Players should be logged on and ready to play at 9:45 am EST.
Format
This tournament is not a mirror will feature house written questions in the style of NAQT tossups. Our questions are comparable to the difficulty of an NAQT A set. All players are guaranteed to play at least 10 rounds that consist of 20 tossup questions. There will only be tossups for this tournament, no bonuses.
Teams will be seeded in preliminary brackets, and then reseeded for play off brackets. There is a maximum of 4 players per team and a minimum of 1 player.
There will be no substitutions or alternates. Players are expected to stay and play the full event, even if they are not in contention for the championship.
There will be an initial cap of 16 teams. We reserve the right to extend that cap based on interest and number of moderators.
Registration
We have reached our max and any registrations received now will be put on the waitlist. Players already on registered teams that haven't registered themselves may still register. Here is the current field including the waitlist https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... p=sharing
Fill out this Google form to register https://forms.gle/brmjfLCWPoRfLXN19
School teams may enter as well as individual players. Individual players will be assigned to a team prior to the date of the tournament by the tournament directors. If you have a preference to who you are on a team with, there will be an option on the Google form registration.
Because of the recent Covid-19 pandemic and most of the season's tournaments being cancelled, we are opening this tournament to players entering their first year of college. Freshmen college students only, college sophomores and upperclassmen are not permitted to compete in this event.
Price
The price is $5 per player which can be paid via Venmo to @jbauer999. We are not accepting checks or cash. The price of $5 stands until July 25, 2020. Any registrations after July 25 will be $10.
Prizes
Prizes will be awarded to the top team and the top 3 individuals. We reserve the right to alter the prizes if we please. After the tournament, we will arrange contact details and mail the prizes to the respective players.
Additional Info
There will be a one hour lunch break at the halfway mark which will probably begin somewhere between 12 pm and 1 pm Eastern Standard Time.
Contact
For any further questions, contact the SBU Quiz Bowl team at [email protected]
Stay safe, everyone!

Re: Wolfie Bowl Online Tournament (August 1, 2020)
FIELD EXPANSION
Because most of the season's tournaments were cancelled due to Covid-19, Wolfie Bowl will be open to the upcoming college freshmen who were deprived of a full quiz bowl season. There is an option on the Google form registration for these players. If you are one of these players, you must state your college and graduation year in the form.
Players who are college sophomores, juniors, seniors, or above ARE NOT PERMITTED TO COMPETE IN THIS EVENT. We reserve the right to investigate into any misdoings if we find that any college upperclassmen are competing.

Quick update: So the difficulty has been modified just a teeny bit. I previously said it was equivalent to an IS-A set, but now it's somewhere in between IS-A and IS-S. High schoolers should still be able to answer the questions.

Re: Wolfie Bowl Online Tournament (August 1, 2020) [EXPANSION]
We reached our max amount of teams. Any new teams that register will be put on the waiting list. Players who have not registered, but are on a registered team can still sign up. We have a couple spots open still for free agents. Also if you have less than four players of your team and unless you have already spoken to me, there is a chance a free agent could be put on your team. If you do not want that and you would rather have your team be less than 4 players, then email or PM me.
We also need some playtesters, so if you are interested sign up on this spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
This is only for those who are not playing Wolfie Bowl. If you are thinking of registering, bit haven't done so, do not sign up playtesting. This is only for those who are 100% sure they're not going to play.

IMPORTANT UPDATE
We are two days away from the tournament. We need everyone to pay their entry fees as well as join the server. If you have not gotten the server link or unsure if you have paid yet, please contact [email protected]
There will be a staff meeting on Friday 3pm ET for staffers who are not experienced in moderating online tournaments. If you are experienced, then you do have to attend this meeting.
Players and staff should be logged on and ready by 9:45 am ET at the very latest Saturday morning.
Edit: Accidentally said Friday instead of Saturday in the last sentence

Wolfie Bowl Subcategory Distribution
EDIT: This has been fixed so that every value more or less adds up to the road category distribution. Some may not add up to exactly 1 because of decimals. I apologize for what might be the ugliest distribution ever. I also apologize for doing the math incorrectly the first time. This is obviously not an ideal set distribution. On the bright side, this makes me realize that I need to relearn some math...

As Carolyn pointed out, the subdistribution for literature adds up to 3.05, instead of the 4 it is meant to be. However, after a quick perusal of the rest of the subdistribution, I'm finding that none of the other subjects seem to add up properly as well. Am I missing something here?JA01 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2020 2:47 pm Wolfie Bowl Subcategory Distribution

Re: Wolfie Bowl Online Tournament (August 1, 2020) [EXPANSION]
I just got done reading for this, and it was a very enjoyable set. Packets were really well balanced and of appropriate difficulty for the field and for the most part were very well constructed. Almost all questions had good pyramidality with just a few questions having misplaced early clues leading to buzzer races. Packets could have used some copy editing and different choices in pronunciation guides. The writing and editing group should really be proud of their efforts in producing this set, it was really well put together.
Also, logistics were relatively well done with only minor delays due to a bot breaking down, but some additional planning/transparency about the tournament format regarding tiebreaking and cross-bracket play. Excellent use of the discord capabilities for communications and a very well-run day-of dissemination of information. Great job today!

Wolfie Bowl happened and it was a moderate success!
I'd like to thank all the players who competed. Everyone did so well and it was great that the set was mostly well received. I'd also like to thank the staff. They did a great job even when stuff got confusing. We really couldn't have done it without them. Thank you to Joe Feldman for helping out with the rebracketing. Thank you to Aidan York for being a great statkeeper. Thank you to all the playtesters for helping us edit the set. And thanks to everyone involved, it went way better than expected!
Prelims, playoffs, and finals stats can be found with this link. Combined stats will be available tomorrow. https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/6475/
Again, thank you all! It was a great experience, I hope everyone enjoyed it!
