SCOP Novice Online [NEW FIELD EXPANSION]

Post by a Joe »

The Long Island Quiz Bowl Alliance is proud to announce the fourth tournament of our 2020 Online Tournament Series: the official Discord mirror of SCOP Novice! Details follow.

DATE AND TIME:

SCOP Novice Online will take place on SUNDAY, April 19, 2020, from 10 AM EST to 4 or 5 PM. Online registration opens at 9:15 AM. All players and coaches should be logged onto the server by 9:45 AM.

QUESTIONS/FORMAT:

The event will (obviously) be using SCOP Novice, a High School set of novice difficulty. Unlike our other three tournaments, we will be reading bonuses. The tournament will follow NAQT rules.

Teams will be seeded into preliminary brackets, followed by re-seeding for playoffs. All teams will be guaranteed 10 rounds. Teams are expected to stay and play the entire event, even if you are not in contention for the championship.

The initial field cap will be 24 teams. If we get sufficient moderators, we will up this to 36 teams.

Due to high interest and support from moderators nationwide, the field cap has been expanded to 30 teams! If this also fills we will look to expand to 36 teams.

TEAMS:

There are a maximum of 4 players per team, all of whom may play at once. No alternates or substitutions will be permitted. Teams may play short, with a minimum of one player. Nobody may switch teams during the tournament, such as from "A" to "B" or otherwise. There will be a maximum of 4 teams per school.

Without exception, all players MUST be from the same school. This is not an open mirror; no chimera teams are permitted whatsoever.

The tournament will have restricted eligibility. You can play this tournament if:
-You are in your first or second year of high school quiz bowl and have not attended NSC or HSNCT. Veteran middle school players should use their best judgment and TD discretion will also be applied. (Borrowed from Hunter's SCOP Mirror) OR
- You never scored over 50 PPG at any event

To ensure the smooth functioning of our event, rosters must be submitted at least one week in advance, and they will be checked for eligibility. Coaches are welcome to spectate, as long as we know in advance.

We are happy to allow pseudonymous teams and teams not directly sponsored by their school or district to register. However, we do have certain requirements for these teams, so please contact us via email or phone prior to registration and we will be happy to work with you.

PRIZES:

Trophies will be mailed to the top three teams as well as the top individual. We reserve the right to increase the number of trophies and prizes as the field expands at our discretion.

FEES:

There will be a flat fee of $60 per team. No discounts are available. Fees are due at least one week prior to the event.

Payment can be made via mailed check, PayPal, Venmo, or Wire (if you insist). Please do not mail cash. Note that PayPal, Venmo, and Wire may charge an additional fee. We can process purchase orders and we will provide W-9 forms and invoices on request.

Write all checks to "The Long Island Quiz Bowl Alliance". Mail checks to P.O. Box 205, Nesconset, NY 11767.

REGISTRATION:

In order to register, follow one of these options:

-- Fill out THIS GOOGLE FORM
-- Email us at [email protected] or post in this thread with the following:
---- Number of teams
---- The name of your school, and pseudonym if applicable
---- An email address where we can reach you
-- We can also take registrations by phone; I cannot post the phone number here, but reach out and I will call you.

Once you receive a confirmation from us, you are officially registered.

Please ensure you register prior to the day of the tournament. The drop deadline is one week prior to the event, after which you will be responsible for the full amount due.

STATS:

Full and complete team and individual stats will be posted within 48 hours after the completion of the tournament.

If you have any further questions, please let us know!

NOTE:

This tournament will be following The Long Island Protocols for Handling Accusations of Cheating.

Can a player from middle school play up for this tournament if they play with the school they are registered for next year?

The eligibility guidelines for this event have been changed.

Also, I'm not sure why bold, underline, and URLs are not working, but know that the issue ain't on my end.

Somehow the "Disable BBCode" checkbox below the post got checked. I've fixed it.

In that case, it probably is my fault. My apologies!

Eastern time? 6 AM for California teams? Log in by 5:45 AM PDT?

(Just asking for clarification. I realize that it either has to start early in the west or end really late in the east.)

I was made aware that the times I posted on all my announcements were ridiculous. As such, to assist with sleep for West Coast teams, we changed it to 10 AM Eastern/log on by 945 AM Eastern.

Thanks for pointing that out, Colin. All my posts will be updated.

How will prelim seeding be determined? Additionally, how will playoffs work, and will there be a finals game?

Seeding will be determined by previous performances, including MS performances; if none are available, we will do our best to be accurate, but of course, we are not infallible.

We will determine playoffs and finals structure once the field closes and we know for sure how many teams there will be.

Thanks to everyone who played yesterday! It was an excellent event, the largest online Quizbowl tournament ever! Choate Lava Lizard came out on top after a hard-fought final, followed by Stanton, Plano West, and Wayzata.

Here is a link to the stats.

I want to give a special thanks to all my staffers-- we couldn't have done it without each and every one of you.

We hope to see you at James Blair Bowl and at the Island Cup May!
