Harvard would love to see a HFT mirror in North Carolina this upcoming season! We know that NCSSM has successfully hosted Grapes of Smath the last couple years, but the student that we corresponded with from the school has graduated. If anyone in NC is interested in mirroring the set, please email us at [email protected]. Please also note that the mirror fee is $10 per team, lowered from $15 last year.

Bonfire of the Manatees Oct. 12, 2019 at Raleigh Charter

Post by betsynewmark »

This is to announce the Bonfire of the Manatees on October 12, 2019

Raleigh Charter High is pleased to announce that we will host the 12th annual Bonfire of the Manatees on Saturday, October 12, 2019. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 to 5:00 p.m., though we may well finish earlier. The tournament is open to any high school team(s) that wish to attend.
Affiliation: The tournament will use NAQT set IS-186 and will serve as a qualifier for the NAQT national tournament with the top 15% of teams getting bids. We also expect it will be a platinum qualifier for PACE’s national tournament with the top 25% of teams getting invitations for their national tournament.

Purchasing Question Sets: If you would like to purchase the questions, please let me know ahead of time. The cost is $10 per set.

Format: The competition will be nine rounds; every team is guaranteed at least 6 rounds. We’ll decide on the exact playoff format once we see how many teams are signed up. All rounds will be played according to NAQT procedures, with 20 pyramid-style tossups and corresponding bonuses. We will play powers and negs, but there will be no bouncebacks on bonuses. As in years’ past, games will be Swiss-paired for the first six rounds using our automated scoring program. Trophies will be awarded to the two top teams and book prizes for the top ten individual scorers.

Registration: To register, please e-mail Betsy Newmark at [email protected] with the number of teams and buzzers you wish to bring, and an e-mail address where we may reliably contact you. Soon after, you should receive a confirmation email along with a packet of information regarding the tournament.

Fees: The fee per team will be $70, with a $10 discount for each fully functional buzzer system that has a control box and eight buzzers.

Teams may purchase copies of the tournament questions for $10. Please let me know ahead of time so I can make copies for your school.

Payment may be mailed either prior to October 12, or paid in person on the day of the tournament. Please make all checks out to Raleigh Charter High School.

Teams: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a half-time substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day—no switching between the A and B teams, for example. Teams may also play shorthanded with fewer players.

Food: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. Further information regarding local food options will be provided along with the confirmation email sent to you after registration.

We hope to see your team at the Bonfire at the Manatees!

When: 11/16/19

Location:
East Chapel Hill High School: 500 Weaver Dairy Rd, Chapel Hill, NC

Set:
Harvard Fall XIV, which is a regular plus difficulty set (harder than IS sets and easier than national tournaments).

Format: Tentatively, preliminaries will consist of 5 rounds of round robin play, with playoff rounds being a round robin in a smaller bracket based on preliminary performance (your team would play everyone else in that smaller bracket).

Registration Fee:
$60/team

Discounts:
Working buzzer system: -$10
150+ miles one way distance from East to your school: -$10
Experienced staffer: -$10
Minimum fee/team: $40

Team/Roster size:
Each team can have six players registered for it with only four playing at a time. Substitutions are permitted at halftime. Teams can play shorthanded should they choose. Anyone registered to a particular team cannot switch to another team in the tournament, including between A and B teams from the same school.

Dining Options:
Food will not be provided at the tournament site, but there are some options both at a short walking distance as well as the Timberlyne shopping area with all sorts of restaurants/fast food places, which is a short drive up Weaver Dairy. We can provide information about nearby food places if teams need it.

Awards:
Trophies will be awarded to the top 2 teams after playoffs and the top 10 individuals during preliminaries will receive book prizes

If you would like to register, email [email protected] with the name of your school, the e-mail to be used for contacting you, how many teams you would like to register, if you are bringing buzzers, and if you have any applicable discounts.

On the day, payment can be made by either cash or a check made out to ECHHS Quizbowl. Check in will start at 8:15 and there will be an intro meeting at 8:45 with the goal to have a 9:00 start. Thanks, and we’re hoping to see you there!

IAC is happy to announce it is holding the following tournaments in the region:

Varsity / JV
  • Piedmont - Lake Norman Charter School - Saturday, March 14th - on our B Set.

Teams may register at this link and find more information about a tournament on the tournament page here. The registration deadline is 7pm Eastern time on the (usually it’s a) Friday 8 days before the tournament or 7pm Eastern time the (usually it’s a) Monday before the tournament for an additional $10 late fee per team. There are no registration deadlines for individual events (i.e. walk ins are welcome; please arrive 15 minutes before the beginning of the Bee / Exams as per the schedule on the tournament page).

We will be holding the Varsity / JV National Qualifying Exams for the US Geography Championships / International Geography Bee, US History Bee, (new!) National Science Bee and (new!) National Political Science Bee during the first part of the lunch break. Those who take exam(s) should do the exam(s) first, and then eat afterwards - there will be time to do so. These are 50-question, 20-minute time limit multiple-choice tests - it's $10 per student per Exam. Important Note! - You CAN do 3 or 4 exams, but you still only have a maximum of 40 minutes to take these. You can also do other exams at our upcoming B and A Set tournaments or with a proctor at your school / homeschool association.

If you have further questions about any of these, please email our tournament coordinator, Marshall Mullins, at [email protected]

A reminder about Duke's upcoming BHSAT mirror in two weeks. We hope to see you in Durham on February 29! viewtopic.php?f=1&t=23537
Inscrutable Fox wrote: Mon Dec 02, 2019 1:31 pm Duke Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce a mirror of BHSAT XXIX on February 29, 2020. I will be tournament director and can be contacted at [email protected] with any questions. See this thread for further set details.

Location and Time:
This tournament will be held in the Classroom Building on Duke University’s East Campus in Durham, North Carolina. The opening meeting will be at 8:30 am and rounds will start as close to 9 am as possible. The Opening Meeting will be held in Classroom Building 103. See “Parking Information” below for parking recommendations.

Field Size:
This tournament’s field will have a field cap of 18 teams. Pending the acquisition of more staff, I will bump the cap to 24 teams, but it will not go higher. Once the cap is met, I will keep a waitlist.

Cost:
The cost of this tournament will be $75 per team.

Discounts:
Buzzer systems: $-5 per buzzer system
Experienced Staffer Discount: -$10 per staffer
Travel: -$10 per 150 miles travelled 1 way (your school to Duke, as per Google Maps) Discounts applied to “A” team until to minimum fee is reached.
Minimum Total Cost: $50 per team
New to Quizbowl: -$15 per team if school hasn’t played pyramidal Quizbowl since September 2015.

Payment:
We will accept cash or checks. Please make checks out to “Duke University”, and bring checks with you the morning of the tournament. Anyone with inquiries regarding payment information should reach out to me.

Registration:
To register, email me at [email protected]. Please include: (1) your expected number of teams, (2) the discounts you expect to claim, and (3) the names of the moderators you're bringing, if you’re bringing any.

Rules
•20 tossups and bonuses per game
•We will use powers and negs
•No bouncebacks on bonuses

Parking Information:
Please note that this tournament will take place on Duke’s East Campus. The Classroom Building is directly off of the main bus loop for East Campus, so dropping teams off in front of this building and then parking should be very straightforward. As for parking options, the visitors lots at Smith Warehouse and the on-street parking and parking lots along Broad Street or 9th Street are likely the best and cheapest options, since parking on this campus is somewhat limited. Please note that the visitors lots on West Campus are quite far from East Campus, and won’t be the best option.

Lunch/Food Options:
There several restaurants within walking/driving distance on 9th Street and (to a lesser extent) along Hillsborough Road or in downtown Durham. Dining options on Duke’s West Campus are available, but parking may be troublesome, so this isn't ideal.

I will post field updates here. We look forward to seeing everyone in Durham on February 29!

Is anybody else interested in getting together a NASAT team from NC? NASAT info is here: https://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewt ... =2&t=23781. I would have some interest in this event, a nationals tournament with teams representing different states. Thank you.
