rob pointed out that voting for a song means you are voting for it as (your idea of) a "best song of the decade", not just the song you like more, which was a helpful reminder to me, that also makes me want to abstain more.

Robyn - Dancing on My Own vs. Angel Olsen - Shut Up Kiss Me
yeah i know the music publications said so but Dancing on my Own is the ideal winner of this bracket.

Perfume Genius - Queen vs. Björk - Stonemilker
i don't like the words to stonemilker.

Rosalía - Malamente (Cap.1: Augurio) vs. LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean
malamente slaps or claps but

THIS BASEMENT HAS A COLD GLOOOOOOOOOW
though it's BETTER THAN A BUNCH OF OTHEERS

Tame Impala - Let It Happen vs. Grimes - Oblivion
i think, rather sillily, that Kill v. Maim is the song of the decade. oblivion is better than the fugazi song suggestion (which i am pulling because both songs, interestingly, dance around the same topic. oblivion's lyrics are more oblique and fugazi's are pretty clumsy. and i like both).

i like let it happen a lot, but its mood is too close to the very (even more) popular and inescapable The Less I Know the Better and (i swear this makes sense) Do I Wanna Know?, which are two songs that are total earworms but i wish i didnt have to hear more than once in my life. they make me feel totally unengaged after the first listen (largely because theyre so easily memorable), which is the opposite of what i want from music. not sure how to describe this very specific gripe i have.

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. Taylor Swift - Blank Space

M.I.A. - Bad Girls vs. Solange - Cranes in the Sky
not fond enough of either song in total.

Mitski - Your Best American Girl vs. Sufjan Stevens - Fourth of July

Arcade Fire - Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City
farewell, sprawl ii. you deserve more than any words i can give. maybe i will try.

Robyn - Dancing on My Own vs. Angel Olsen - Shut Up Kiss Me

Perfume Genius - Queen vs. Björk - Stonemilker. Cannot wait for one of these boring wastes of time to lose!

Rosalía - Malamente (Cap.1: Augurio) vs. LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean. I continue to be absolutely baffled by how anybody could vote against this breath of fresh air.

Tame Impala - Let It Happen vs. Grimes - Oblivion. Can I actually vote for the Rihanna version though?

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. Taylor Swift - Blank Space

M.I.A. - Bad Girls vs. Solange - Cranes in the Sky

Mitski - Your Best American Girl vs. Sufjan Stevens - Fourth of July

Arcade Fire - Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City

So, in conversing about this bracket, I've said that to me have been only two revelatory songs so far, and they're both in this batch of selections. As for the metaconversation about voting for "Best Song of the Decade", I don't know what that really means, so I'm going to vote for the songs I enjoyed most or thought were better. I was in that decade, my voice counts.

Robyn - Dancing on My Own vs. Angel Olsen - Shut Up Kiss Me
As before, this Robyn song hits me as "pretty good". I have no context for any greater figurative cachet it may or may not hold. Good on her for having much longer dance-pop staying power than almost anyone. The fuzz-rock aspects of "Shut Up Kiss Me" are novel enough on their own, but they don't strike me as much more than listenable.

Perfume Genius - Queen vs. Björk - Stonemilker.
"Perfume Genius" just kind of drags on. Not much to recommend it. Then again, Bjork's syntax irks me, so abstain.

Rosalía - Malamente (Cap.1: Augurio) vs. LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean.
I do like Latin hip-hop inspired rhythmic pop that helps me practice my Spanish. I like about 40% of the second song, and still not that much.

Tame Impala - Let It Happen vs. Grimes - Oblivion
"Let it Happen" has a nice, catchy backbeat; the rest of the song I could take or leave. "Oblivion" is quite possibly the song I've liked most that was produced in the last ~3 years. I'm old and thus oblivious to any anti-Grimes backlash.

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. Taylor Swift - Blank Space
"Get Lucky" would be nice to have as eternal background music for the course of one's life - it doesn't intrude too much, never accelerates in tempo, catchy, groovy, is repetitive in a way which doesn't annoy. It's perfect without being sublime. "Blank Space" is slick, clever, and pretty damn soulless - it's the sort of song that Lady Gaga would have invested with at least a couple layers of irony.

M.I.A. - Bad Girls vs. Solange - Cranes in the Sky
Ah, this song. Not a fan of the repetition and blase vocal delivery of "Bad Girls". "Cranes in the Sky" at least has the advantage of having beautifully delivered vocals. Dunno what's going on with its video, though.

Mitski - Your Best American Girl vs. Sufjan Stevens - Fourth of July
On second listen, I really like what's going on in "Your Best American Girl" once the guitar kicks in. Sufjan Stevens continues to be not for me.

Arcade Fire - Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City
The second go 'round, I think I got "Sprawl II". "Maad City" is okay, but I don't see what makes it exceptional.

To be clear, I'm certainly doing both! Whether or not I like a song is pretty much guaranteed to take precedence over how well it would serve as some sort of idealized "best song of the decade"--it's more of an extra dimension to think about things through.

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Sky Ferreira - Everything is Embarrassing
Very unfortunate matchup for Sky here.

Gotye (ft. Kimbra) - Somebody That I Used to Know vs. Lorde - Royals
Protest vote.

Janelle Monáe - Make Me Feel vs. Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me
Protest vote, also this songs slaps.

Vampire Weekend - Hannah Hunt vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me
Getting to vote for Kendrick against a beloved indie band? Hell yeah!

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. Weyes Blood - Movies
Hard choice, I like both of these songs! I vibe with the energy on “Pedestrian” just a bit more though.

M83 - Midnight City vs. Fiona Apple - Every Single Night
Very easy choice IMO.

Earl Sweatshirt - Solace vs. David Bowie - Lazarus
Man I really love Earl and this song. Sorry David.

Car Seat Headrest - Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids
Man this is a really hard choice! My intuition tells me CSH is winning here and I don’t want to perform a racism so I’m going to throw my vote to Frank.

Besides the VW/FlyLo matchup these are all extremely close
Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Sky Ferreira - Everything is Embarrassing
Everything is Embarrassing has turned out to be one of my most frequently played songs of the past couple weeks, especially in the shower when I’m feeling sorry for myself about my recent-ish breakup. But I gotta give the vote to Ye here.

Gotye (ft. Kimbra) - Somebody That I Used to Know vs. Lorde - Royals

Janelle Monáe - Make Me Feel vs. Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me

Vampire Weekend - Hannah Hunt vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me
Vote for this song!!! It’s so good!!

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. Weyes Blood - Movies
I’m not getting over this absolute BANGER any time soon

M83 - Midnight Cityvs. Fiona Apple - Every Single Night

Earl Sweatshirt - Solace vs. David Bowie - Lazarus

Car Seat Headrest - Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids

kendrick’s vocal delivery, flows, and lyricism come together on this track to make an extremely compelling coming-of-age tale all while tackling the broader issues of poverty, crime, and gang violence. also, that beat + beat switch? it’s one of kendrick s best songs and one of the best narrative rap songs ever made imo

Taking them in isolation, Never Catch Me may be the better song. The album Hannah Hunt is from is one of the best of the decade, though, so I'm using it as a stand-in for that. No one can stop me.

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Sky Ferreira - Everything is Embarrassing - “Everything is Embarrassing” is really growing on me

Gotye (ft. Kimbra) - Somebody That I Used to Know vs. Lorde - Royals - giving it to non-monarchist song here

Janelle Monáe - Make Me Feel vs. Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me

Vampire Weekend - Hannah Hunt vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. Weyes Blood - Movies - not a huge fan of the third act of “Movies,” so this was a clear choice even though I like both songs

M83 - Midnight City vs. Fiona Apple - Every Single Night

Earl Sweatshirt - Solace vs. David Bowie - Lazarus

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Sky Ferreira - Everything is Embarrassing. With Formation out, Runaway becomes even more of a clear...runaway...winner.

Gotye (ft. Kimbra) - Somebody That I Used to Know vs. Lorde - Royals. Tough competition between two wonderfully-executed pop songs, but I'll go with the one that I'm more excited to still hear on the radio.

Janelle Monáe - Make Me Feel vs. Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me. Another tough one, both of these are actually pretty interesting.

Vampire Weekend - Hannah Hunt vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. Weyes Blood - Movies. I don't really care about either of these, but I'll vote for the one that doesn't sound like an art school project designed to prove the artist is smarter than the listener.

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Sky Ferreira - Everything is Embarrassing

Gotye (ft. Kimbra) - Somebody That I Used to Know vs. Lorde - Royals
Difficult choice. I don't have a strong preference musically, but Royals is a bit more iconic.

Janelle Monáe - Make Me Feel vs. Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me

Vampire Weekend - Hannah Hunt vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me
Vampire Weekend deserves better than to go up against such amazing songs time after time, and I'm rather annoyed about how much I end up voting against them. Perhaps if this pick were "Step" or the pick in the 2000s bracket were "Oxford Comma," but alas...

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. Weyes Blood - Movies

M83 - Midnight City vs. Fiona Apple - Every Single Night

Earl Sweatshirt - Solace vs. David Bowie - Lazarus

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Sky Ferreira - Everything is Embarrassing

The people love Kanye West, but I'm going to use this space to plug Sky Ferreira's album. 2013 was a year when I was really taken by a lot of new synthpop (Chvrches, Tegan and Sara, The Knife, etc.), but the album from that year to which I find myself eternally returning is hers. It's so good that it doesn't even matter that Everything Is Embarrassing isn't on it.

Gotye (ft. Kimbra) - Somebody That I Used to Know vs. Lorde - Royals

These songs feel similar, in that they were both big pop songs in the first part of the decade and they both have mononymous female singers from New Zealand. Somebody That I Used to Know came out my last semester of high school. Back then I didn't have a car and also didn't have a phone, but I was the starting third baseman for the school baseball team, which made me generally indispensable, and so people with cars would have to make arrangements with me to meet them at a certain place so that they could pick me up for away games (which were all of our games, because the field at our school was being redeveloped at the time). In the car we always listened to pop music on the radio, which allowed me for the first time to show off one of my neatest party tricks (my ability to sing along to all of the words of Total Eclipse of the Heart) and also let me hone my skills in terms of making snap reactions to new music. I first heard Call Me Maybe on one such baseball trip (which on its own would make the decade of my life I spent playing baseball worthwhile), and I also heard Somebody That I Used to Know then. My first thought upon hearing that song was that Gotye sounded so much like Sting that I wondered if this was an old Police song that I hadn't heard. It's a fine song, but I can't say that The Police really do all that much for me.

There are a lot of bones that I can pick with Royals. I have never really liked Lorde's voice very much, which hasn't stopped me from enjoying her music, but she's made plenty of better songs than this one (Team and Tennis Court are both clearly better out of the singles from Pure Heroine, and Green Light is a song that has never failed to make me happy hearing it). It's reasonable to consider the racial politics of a white girl from halfway around the world sing-rapping about eschewing the trappings of rap status, and plenty of people did at the time. In spite of that, though, while I wouldn't turn off the radio if I heard either of these songs, I'm more excited to hear Royals, and that gets it my vote. It doesn't hurt that it reminds me of the 2014 World Series.

Janelle Monáe - Make Me Feel vs. Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me

Echoing what Ali said last time around, Archie, Marry Me is one of the best love songs I know. It's pretty and clever and sincere without being corny. The coolest friend that I have played it at his wedding. It's interesting in that it's very much a pop song but it is very much not from the perspective of a sixteen-year-old, unlike most pop music. It's appropriate that the immediately prior song is called Adult Diversion, because Alvvays deals with adult situations.

I spent a lot of time listening to both Alvvays albums in the summer of 2018. In March of that year I moved from northern Virginia back to California and got a job at an insurance company in Foster City. My commute was hellish: each day I would get a ride from one of my parents from home in Cupertino to the train station in Mountain View, whence I would take a train to San Mateo and then a shuttle to Foster City before walking a couple more blocks to the office. The job was awful: I spent each day looking at spreadsheets full of data on workers' compensation insurance premiums indexed by location and occupational category until my eyes glazed over, and I realized very quickly that the quality of my work made no difference but what mattered very much to my superiors was that I made sure to clock in and work precisely eight hours every single day before clocking out. I once ducked out fifteen minutes early to catch the bus that would begin my journey home, which earned me a reprimand even though I had gone well over forty hours for the week, and so after that I never put in extra time again. I was also living at home, which for better or for worse meant that I was practically a ward of my parents, as if the previous six years of my life hadn't happened and I was back in high school again, only instead of learning new things or playing sports or doing any of the other things that gave my life meaning in high school I was looking at spreadsheets.

All day at work I would put my headphones in and listen to history-related podcasts, and in the mornings and evenings I would pull out a book to read on the train (whatever its other faults, that part of my life let me get a lot of reading done) and listen mostly to Alvvays. More than anything, the lyrical content reminded me of a time when I was among people for whom these lyrics were relevant. The line "too young to stay in" didn't have any relevance to my life situation at the time, but there had been a time when it had meant something, and I could only hope that sooner or later I'd have a different job in a different city and I'd live a different life and the lyrics could mean something real again. Fortunately now I'm in a situation where I can hear this song and don't have to dream, but for a time it provided sustenance that I needed badly.

Vampire Weekend - Hannah Hunt vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me

Andrew asked last week what it is that people like about Hannah Hunt. I can't speak to anyone else, but out of all the songs on Modern Vampires of the City I find that this one has the strongest emotional content. Vampire Weekend's music has a lot of artifice to it, which is an essential part of who they are and how they present themselves, but despite all the odd verbiage that seems to fall away here. "If I can't trust you, then damn it, Hannah" is basically unvarnished.

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. Weyes Blood - Movies

M83 - Midnight City vs. Fiona Apple - Every Single Night

Midnight City isn't my favorite song of this decade, but it's the song that sounds the most like this decade. Despite having heard it countless times, I haven't gotten tired of it yet.

Earl Sweatshirt - Solace vs. David Bowie - Lazarus

Robyn - Dancing On My Own vs. Perfume Genius - Queen
woooo i’m finally voting for it!

LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean vs. Tame Impala - Let It Happen
boring long song vs. fun long song

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. M.I.A. - Bad Girls
live fast, die young, bad girls do it well

Mitski - Your Best American Girl vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City
Mitski has had a great run but she’s up against the best song left in this bracket.

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Lorde - Royals
Good run for Lorde. Really hoping I can vote against “Runaway” soon.

Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me
This shouldn't be a third-round matchup.

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. M83 - Midnight City
I cannot believe you capybaras killed “Every Single Night.” And for “Midnight City???” Of all songs??? Good thing “Pedestrian at Best” is fantastic.

David Bowie - Lazarus vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids

"Thousands of people singing 'Now I'll be dancing on my own.' Wow--what does that even mean?""

LCD Soundsystem - dance yrself clean vs. Tame Impala - Let It Happen
battle of the dances next round, please.

don't discount the lyrics on dance yrself clean, even if they kind of alternate between indecipherable and joy.

Daft Punk (ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky vs. M.I.A. - Bad Girls
at this point i realized that the flow of Bad Girls was appropriated by JAY Z for his song Tom Ford, and that i like both, though in each case the production is much livelier than the rapping.

Mitski - Your Best American Girl vs. Kendrick Lamar - m.A.A.d. City
my favorite moment in mAAd city is what's going on in the background when kendrick says "ever since that day i was lookin at him different".

i listened to My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars for the hundredth time today

Kanye West (ft. Pusha-T) - Runaway vs. Lorde - Royals
royals is probably a better "best song of the 2010s" for reasons along the lines of how sam brochin feels.

Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me vs. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar) - Never Catch Me
the winner of this will face runaway...
(runaway vs. never catch me???? what a gag!)

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best vs. M83 - Midnight City

David Bowie - Lazarus vs. Frank Ocean - Pyramids
