Michigan Winter Tournament at Harvard (2/22/20)

Post by celsius273 »

Hi everyone!

***Please note the revised date***

Harvard College Bowl will be hosting a mirror of Michigan Winter Tournament on Saturday, February 22th.

Logistics:
The tournament will be held in the first floor of Sever Hall, which is located next to the historic Tercentenary Theatre. We recommend using the MBTA Red Line to get to the tournament, as parking options in the area are limited and traffic can be unpredictable. Registration will begin at 8:30 am: we aim to hold the opening meeting at 9:00 am and finish by 6:00 pm at the latest (teams in finals or tiebreakers may need to stay until 6:30 pm). There will be preliminary and playoff rounds, with rebracketing in between. A lunch break will take place when most convenient; teams will have access to a variety of food options in Harvard Square. Parking is admittedly difficult in Cambridge, but this is probably the best option.

Justin Duffy will be the tournament director and can be reached at either [email protected] or [email protected].

Fees:
Tournament fees/discounts are the following:
+$125 per attending team
-$5 per working buzzer system (must have power cord and 8 functional buzzers, maximum three buzzer systems per organization)
-$15 per experienced moderator (must be familiar with quiz bowl rules/scoring, and have good pronunciation, speed, and reading skills)
-$10 if your team has to travel more than 200 miles one way, according to Google Maps

Registration:
The field size is capped at 20 teams; both high school and college teams are eligible to participate. To register, email [email protected]. Please include "MWT Registration" in the email subject, and specify where you are from, the number of teams you would like to bring, and any relevant discounts. Registrations are not complete until we respond in some fashion saying so! Chimera teams are not allowed without approval from both Harvard College Bowl and the Michigan Winter team.

Set Details:
Details for MWT can be found here.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions regarding the tournament!

It seems like the current plan is to play an 11-team round robin. Given that there are currently two house teams, would it be possible to do either a 12-team round robin (keeping the same number of rounds) or a 10-team round robin with rebracketing (like ACF regionals at Yale this year, and Penn Bowl at Harvard last fall)? Both formats have less byes and more games played for everyone.

Thanks to everyone who played today! We stuck with a simple 11-team round robin, which still lasted until around 6 pm due to the extra 2/2 in each packet. Congratulations to MIT A, who went 9-1 to clear the field and win the tournament! Brown A, MIT B, and the Yale Kids all tied for second place with 7-3 records. Complete stats can be found here .

This was a good first experience for me as a TD, and I hope everyone who played today also had a good time!
