New Trier Varsity, IL (12/14/19) (Penn Bowl & NAQT IS-189A)

Post by Stained Diviner »

The 2019 New Trier Varsity Tournament will take place on December 14. We will have an Über-Competitive Division and a Standard Division. The Penn Bowl Set will be used in the Über-Competitive Division, and NAQT IS 189A will be used in the Standard Division.

To register for the tournament, use the attached Entry Form. To reserve spots for a team or apply to staff, contact me at [email protected] or post below. Team names must be the name of the high school that the students attend.

Because the two divisions are using different questions, and the Über-Competitive Division questions are very difficult for high school students, we are allowing all teams to register for the division of their choice. This means that there may be some very strong teams in the Standard Division. The tournament format will be determined based on the number of entries for each division. When you register, please let me know how many teams you want in each division.

This competition will follow PACE rules except there will be no bouncebacks on bonuses and 15 point powers.

The cost is $100 per team, which covers lunch for the students and coach. There is not a buzzer discount, but we expect teams to bring buzzers unless they have a good reason not to. Teams traveling long distances or who are in financial hardship can request a discount.

I will take any team that registers by December 1. After that, it will depend on getting the right field size and having enough staff.

Hi coach,
Mr. Reinstein just updates the original post whenever someone new enters. I'm 90% sure the Uber division will add Barrington (IL) this week, fwiw.

Coach Price is correct. We are currently at 7 8 teams, and it probably will end up at 10.

We are currently at 10 and 38 teams. At this point, I will only accept new teams if they help me keep both of those numbers even.

We could still use one more team in Standard. We're full.

>>>

Thank you for joining us on this pleasant December Saturday! All matches are in the new part of the building, which is above the Cafeteria. You should avoid the old part of the building. If you need to use the restroom, you should go to the southeast corner of the cafeteria on the 1st floor, near the southern part of the 4th floor, or past W303 and the drinking fountains on the 3rd floor. If you use the 3rd floor restrooms, be quiet in the hallway, even if you see the nearby Nobel Prize medal.

Standard Headquarters are in Room W349. Uber-Competitive Headquarters are in Room W431. If you need a buzzer, go to Room W349. If there is a protest that affects the outcome of a match, the Moderator should go to Room W349, and the teams should stay in the room. After each round, the Moderator should bring the scoresheets to their division’s headquarters. Standard questions should be picked up from the same place, and Uber-Competitive questions will be emailed to moderators. Standard questions should be returned to headquarters.

Matches are 20/20. After the 20th tossup and its associated bonus is done, the match is over unless there is a tie. If there is a tie, tossups are read until there is a correct answer or neg penalty. Time limits are five seconds for giving an answer once you buzz or for a tossup going dead once it is read. There are no time warnings for tossups. Teams get five seconds to answer a bonus part. There is a one second warning before time is up. Bonuses do not rebound. Powers are worth 15 points. The first team to buzz in with an incorrect answer or non-answer while a tossup is still being read is penalized five points.

Lunch is after five matches for Standard and, depending on how it goes, four or five matches for Über-Competitive.

Über-Competitive will play a complete round robin. After nine matches, additional matches will be played if there is a tie for any of the first four places or if there is a single 2nd place team exactly one win behind a single 1st place team, with the latter situation being an advantaged final.

In Standard, the pool winners and top five wildcard teams will advance to parallel Championship pools. Crossover matches will count towards wildcard spots but not winning the pool. Pool champions will be decided by wins, then points scored, then PPB, then powers. Wildcards will be decided by wins, then PPB, then points scored, then powers.

There are four trophies in each division.

All Tournament Teams will be announced during lunch.

Please do not discuss/post question content on the internet/social media. You are free to post about any other aspect of the tournament.

I want to give a huge thanks to our staff today: Colby Burnett, Ulysses Capistran, Iain Carpenter, Alex Damisch, Claudia Danowski, Joe Freeman, Jonah Greenthal, Frank Hannon, Adena Horwitz, Matt Hurley, Nina Kaushikkar, Benjamin Keown, Denise Kreb, Mike Laudermith, Jonathan Legendre, Grace Mathew, Jack Mayer, Mitch McCullar, Thomas Mercurio, Andrew Nadig, Ali Nagib, Katie Parks, BJ Ryan, Adam Silverman, Andrew Wang, and Matthew Welmers. This was probably the smoothest tournament I have ever run, and it wasn't because of me. Everybody did a great job, and I was able to focus on serving pizza.

Congratulations to the students. As you can see from the stats, they played great. The students and coaches had great attitudes, and it was a pleasure for me to be a part of this tournament.
