Reel Knowledge: A Fine Arts Film Set

Post by ErikC »

I am currently working on an academic set of film questions, intend to be played as a side event in small teams or shootouts. I would be comfortable putting almost any of these questions in a pure academic set of regular quizbowl questions. The majority of clues will focus on the visual and audio elements of film that make it an unique medium in lieu of more plot based clues. A measured amount of clues regarding film production and film criticism will also be used when appropriate. Some answerlines could be found in regular difficulty sets - expect some close readings of well-known films alongside tossups on canonical filmmakers from around the world.

A tentative distribution, to be further subdivided by region and time period:
6 United States and Canada
6 Europe
4 Asia
2 Africa, Oceania, Latin America
2 Mixed and Other (questions that mix the above, genres, criticism, technical questions, etc.)

While I intend to be thorough with cinema cultures from around the world and filmmakers of marginalized groups, I still want the majority of questions to be converted in fields with avid movie watchers. People and places will definitely come up more than once in questions, but individual answerlines will not be repeated. A few questions will clue works made for television by filmmakers that are included in critical discussions of film. Genre questions will clue films that would traditionally be outside the scope of an academic tossup.

I am aiming for 7 packets of 20 or 24 powermarked tossups. I'm planning on this set to be ready for the beginning of the new quizbowl season in October. I'll update this post later this summer with info on exact dates, distribution info, and mirror fees.

An update on this set: I'm about 75% done this set. I've updated the distribution in the OP to accommodate more questions that span different regions. I plan on having this set available for mirror by October 5.

An update for the curious: this set is finished and has already been mirrored thrice. I've decided to make it free as well.

This was a lot of fun--I thought the answers were for the most part well chosen, as they were both interesting and accessible.

This set could have used some more proofreading--small typos are one thing, but there were a fair share of "actors' names spelled wrong" or "titles of films messed up."

Would be great to see more sets in this fashion.

Yeah, I agree. There were several mistakes I didn't notice/go back to fix from reading the set out loud at the first mirror that became apparent when playing over text last night.
