2019 ACF Fall at Yale (11/02/2019)

I am pleased to announce that the Northeast site of 2019 ACF Fall will be held at Yale on Saturday, November 2, 2019. The tournament will take place at a to-be-determined building (our room reservations are pending), with team check-in beginning at 8 A.M. The opening meeting will then commence promptly at 8:45 A.M., with gameplay beginning at 9 A.M. James Wedgwood will be the day-of tournament director, and I, Michael Kearney, will handle pre-day logistics. Please direct any questions about this site to me at [email protected].

We are tentatively capping the field at *28* teams.

Eligibility
In general, teams where players are all attending the same school and all taking at least one class for credit during the 2019-2020 school year are eligible to play 2019 ACF Fall. ACF’s full eligibility rules are available here. Questions about eligibility should be directed to [email protected].

This tournament will follow ACF’s official gameplay rules.

Registration
Registration for this event has two steps.
First, please write to [email protected] with your team name, the number of buzzers and staffers with laptops you will be bringing, and whether you traveled more than 200 miles one-way.
Second, fill out the central 2019 ACF Fall registration form with all relevant information. The form is here: https://forms.gle/jeavKYCaCvGJaQNq5. The field for each site can be found here.

Fees
[*] Base fee: $150
[*] New to quizbowl discount: –$100
[*] Shorthanded discount (1-2 players): –$75
[*] Buzzers: –$10 per functional system
[*] Staffers: –$15 per staffer with functional laptop
[*] Travel: –$10 per 200 miles traveled one-way
The "new to quizbowl" discount is intended for schools that did not send a team to any regular collegiate academic tournament (exclusively Novice tournaments do not count) since September 2018, and have no one on the team(s) claiming this discount who played those tournaments for another school.

Packet Discounts/Penalties
Any team with at least two people on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament (either as a college student or as a high school student) prior to September 1, 2018, is required to submit a half-packet, unless it is a high school team attending a high-school-only mirror. If you are unsure whether your team is required to submit a half-packet, please email ACF at [email protected].

The submission schedule is as follows (your submission must be sent to [email protected] by 11:59 PM PDT):
September 7: –$30
September 21: –$15 (–$30 if optional)
October 5: no penalty (–$15 if optional)
October 12: +$25
October 19: +$50

Packets submitted later than October 20 will receive an additional penalty of +$10 per day starting on October 21.

High School Teams
High school teams are not allowed to register for this mirror of ACF Fall.

I'd be very interested in knowing if a quiz bowl team is being started up at Hofstra (great, very exciting!) or if Ben Zhang is just planning on soloing this tournament (please don't do this).

Slight room-booking complications require that I reduce the field cap from 30 to 28. This will likely be a final cap.

We have now hit our field cap and will be accepting teams onto a waitlist. Those interested should email me as described above but should not fill out the central ACF registration form.

Following a number of drops and adds, the waitlist is now clear and the field is at 28. I hope to send out a logistics email tomorrow afternoon if nothing changes in the field.

Excerpted from the logistics email I just sent to teams' contacts.

I (Michael) will not be at the tournament, so James Wedgwood will be TD'ing. He is reachable at [email protected] or via phone (in the email).

With 24 teams, we will split into three brackets of eight. These will play a limited single-bye round robin, meaning that every other round, two teams from the bracket will have a bye. This is necessary due to submitted packets. Following that, we will crossover by twos, forming four brackets of six. You will play everyone you have not yet played (one game will carry over from prelims). The tournament is therefore 11 games in 12 rounds.

Location and Parking:
The tournament will take place at Linsly-Chittenden (LC) Hall on Yale's main campus (map), located at 63 High St., New Haven, Connecticut. Please note: this is the same building where we held our PIANO mirror last year but a different one from where we previously have hosted tournaments. In-person registration will begin at 8 A.M. The opening meeting will then commence promptly at 8:45 A.M in LC 211, and the first round by 9 A.M. Teams are therefore strongly encouraged to plan their arrivals to allow time to find parking.

It is recommended that teams park in the York Street Garage at 150 York St, New Haven, CT 06511. This is the closest garage to the tournament site.

Payment:
We will accept payment via cash, check, or Venmo (@YaleQB) If you plan to pay by check, the check must be made out to “Y. Student Academic Competitions.” Do NOT make checks payable to “Yale Student Academic Competitions."
