EFT @ Columbia (10/5)

Post by naan/steak-holding toll »

I'm pleased to provide this announcement of Columbia University's mirror of the 2019 Early Fall Tournament, the year's premiere "welcome-to-college quizbowl" set, to take place on October 5. More information about this year's iteration of the question set can be found here.

Base Fee: $130
  • -$20 per competent staffer (can finish a round in 30 minutes / is an experienced scorekeeper) provided
  • -$5 per functioning buzzer set (including at least 8 functioning buzzers)
  • -$10 for 200 or more miles of travel (as determined by Google Maps): -$10
  • -$60 for teams from universities that have not attended a non-novice collegiate tournament since January 1, 2018
Minimum Fee: $45 (identical to the tournament mirror fee)

Payment: TBD

Location: TBD, we have yet to get room reservations, but it will definitely be somewhere on the Columbia campus, found in Morningside Heights in Manhattan between Broadway and Amsterdam.

Registration: Teams will be entered into the field on a first-come, first-served basis. The field cap is 24 teams.

To register, please email me at [email protected] with the following information:
  • Number of teams you are bringing
  • Number of buzzers you are bringing
  • Number of staffers you are bringing
  • Cell phone contact info

Current Field - School (24 teams / 14 buzzers / 2 staff)
  • Hunter College HS (1 / 0 / 1)
  • NYU (4 / 2 / 0) [very nice]
  • Penn (4 / 3 / 1)
  • Columbia (4 / 3 / many)
  • Rutgers (4 / 1 / 0)
  • Princeton (3 / 1 / 0)
  • Millburn HS (1 / 1 / 0)
  • Hofstra (1 / 1 / 0)
  • Yale (2 / 3 / 0)

Based on estimates of staff availability, we are expanding the field cap to 24 teams. This is likely to be a final cap.

The field for this tournament is now full. We will accept sign-ups for a wait list. Please note that there are also additional mirrors of this tournament at Maryland and Boston!

Copying this policy from MIT:

Due to the limited field size, we've decided to make 2 changes: a limit of 4 teams per school, and a penalty for cancelling less than 72 hours before the day of the tournament.

We're having trouble getting room reservations resolved and will have more information on that by tomorrow. For now, teams should plan for check-in to start at 8:30 and for games to start at 9AM.

All teams should have had a schedule emailed to them. I've received a few requests for schedule changes, so you'll all be getting a slightly altered printed schedule on Saturday morning. Please arrive at Math 307 (the Math building is near 116th and Broadway) before 9:00 AM for registration.

Excited for tomorrow's tournament!

Many thanks to all the teams who came out for this tournament! Apologies for the various delays and inconveniences throughout the day. In particular, I apologize for the schedule screw-up.

Pending protest, Rutgers defeated Penn A in a one-game final, 300-270, to claim a well-earned victory. Congratulations!

EDIT: Protest is denied, so Rutgers victory stands!

Thanks Will and the Columbia team for running this tournament! We had a great time.

One thing I will say: I would generally not recommend having the field size be staffers * 2, which is what it seemed like yesterday, since it means all rooms run with one staffer. There were a handful of games yesterday that definitely took way longer than they needed to because staffers who should have a scorekeeper/be a scorekeeper were running rooms solo, and while I appreciate having a large field (especially for a tournament like EFT), this led to a very long day. Again, I don't want to distract from the fact that we had a wonderful time yesterday.
