Early Fall Tournament @ MIT (10/5/19)

Post by person361 »

Hello, everyone! We are pleased to announce MIT's mirror of the 2019 Early Fall Tournament, which will take place on Saturday, October 5, 2019.

LOCATION AND SCHEDULE: The tournament will take place on MIT's campus in Cambridge, MA. Teams should report to room 1-190 (located in Building 1) in the morning for registration and opening announcements. We ask that teams arrive between 8:30 and 8:45 in the morning for registration; the opening meeting will start as soon as all teams have arrived, with games beginning immediately following the meeting's conclusion. A campus map can be found here.

GETTING TO MIT: MIT is easily accessible via the Boston T system by taking the Red Line to the Kendall/MIT stop. We recommend teams avoid driving if possible, as parking is very difficult to find on the MIT campus. A list of parking locations on campus can be found here. Please note that West Garage no longer exists.

Each team can have up to six players on its roster, but only four players may play at any one time. Schools planning to bring seven or more players should register a second team.

QUESTION SET: EFT is two stars (regular-minus) on the difficulty scale. More information about EFT can be found in the global announcement.

FEES: The registration fees for this tournament are as follows:

+$125: base fee per team
-$15: each volunteer staffer provided by a school.
-$5: each buzzer set provided by a school. In order to receive this discount, the buzzer system must have at least 8 fully functional buzzers.
-$10: for teams traveling in excess of 200 miles one-way, as determined by the distance Google Maps provides between MIT and your school.
-$60: for teams from universities that have not attended a non-novice collegiate quizbowl tournament since January 1, 2018.
+$50: for teams that drop from the field after 11:59 PM on Tuesday, 10/1 (to be waived at my discretion for reasonable excuses).

The minimum fee for each team is $45.

PAYMENT: Teams may pay either in advance or on the day of the tournament. Either cash or check is acceptable; please make checks out to "MIT Quiz Bowl Team." If your school requires an invoice prior to payment, please let us know immediately. If your team is unable to pay on or before the tournament date, you must let us know at least one week in advance.

REGISTRATION: Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The field cap is 20 teams and may increase if we get more staff and interest. Once the cap is filled, new teams will enter a waitlist and be added to the field if registered teams drop.

Until Monday, September 23 at 11:59 PM, we are limiting registration to 4 teams per school. Extra teams will be added to the waitlist. After 9/23, teams from the waitlist will move into the field, space permitting.

In order to register for this tournament, please email ALL of the following information to me at ericlu [AT] mit [DOT] edu:
1. School name
2. Number of teams you are registering
3. The cell phone number of someone who will be traveling with the team.
4. The number of buzzers and staffers you are intending to bring.

Although expressions of interest in this forum are appreciated, the only official channel for registration is to email the above information to me. Registering teams should receive an email of confirmation within a day. You are not registered for this tournament until you receive an email from me indicating that you are.

Please feel free to contact me at ericlu [AT] mit [DOT] edu if you have any questions or concerns about the tournament. We look forward to hosting your team for an exciting day of quizbowl!

Due to the limited field size, we've decided to make 2 changes: a limit of 4 teams per school until 9/24, and a penalty for cancelling less than 72 hours before the day of the tournament.

Our field of 16 is now full. I'm in the process of confirming staff availability to expand to 18. Expansion beyond that is possible but unlikely.

Thanks to everybody who came to MIT today! The tournament went on for a bit longer than we expected, but I hope that everybody still had fun.

Harvard A defeated Harvard B in an advantaged final to win first place. Harvard C defeated MIT A in a one-game final to claim third place, clinching all 3 trophies for Harvard. Congratulations!

The top 15 prelim scorers were:
1. Maximilian Shatan (3rd Lit, 3rd RMPSS, 1st FA)
2. Steven Liu (1st Science, 2nd RMPSS)
3. Karsten Rynearson (3rd History, 1st Lit)
4. Jason Golfinos (1st History, 1st RMPSS)
5. Victor Pavao (2nd History, 2nd FA)
6. Michael Finnegan (1st Other)
7. Charles Yang
8. Ricky Li (2nd Lit)
9. Anson Berns
10. Hasna Karim (3rd Science)
11. Ethan Fine
12. Judah Weinerman
13. Chris Gilmer-Hill
14. Michael Yue (3rd FA)
15. Michael Kearney

Kelvin Li was 2nd in Science. All of these players, except Steven from the house team, received book prizes.

Prelim stats are up here. Playoff stats will be up within 24 hours.

If you want detailed stats or packets, apply for access to the private forum and wait for their release.
