ACF Fall 2018 - November 3rd, 2018

Post by vengefulsweatermensch »

I am pleased to announce that this year’s iteration of ACF Fall will take place the weekend of November 3, 2018.

The set will be edited by Ashwin Ramaswami, Neil Vinjamuri, Nitin Rao, Olivia Lamberti, Rahul Keyal and Young Lee. I, Nathan Weiser, will be overseeing set production, with assistance from Adam Silverman (who will advise science editing) and other ACF members.

Fees
The fee structure will be the same as the one used for ACF Fall 2017.

Base fee: $135
Buzzer: -$5/functional system
Staffers: -$10/staffer
Shorthanded fee (teams of 1 or 2 players): $60
"New to Quizbowl" discount: $100

Packet submission
Any team with at least two people on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2017 is required to submit a half-packet, unless it is a high school team attending a high school-only mirror. If you have any questions about your team's submission status, please email us at [email protected].

The submission schedule is:
September 8: -$30
September 22: -$15 (-$30 if optional)
October 6: no penalty (-$15 if optional)
October 13: +$25
October 20: +$50
Packets submitted later than October 20 will receive an additional penalty.

If your team desires to submit a half-packet or is obligated to do so, email [email protected] so we can provide you with a 12/12 distribution. It's never too early to start writing!

Hosting
If you are interested in hosting a mirror, please contact us at [email protected]. We intend to have the set mirrored in the following regions (the list will be updated as sites are confirmed):

New England - Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA)
Mid-Atlantic - University of Maryland (College Park, MD)
South Central - Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, GA)
Southeast - University of Florida (Gainesville, FL)
South - Liberal Arts and Science Academy High School (Austin, TX)
Pacific Northwest - University of Washington (Seattle, WA)
Southern California - UCLA (Los Angeles, CA)
Northern California - Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA)
North - University of Minnesota (Minneapolis/Saint Paul, MN)
Great Lakes - Ohio State University (Columbus, OH)
Midwest - University of Illinois (Champaign, IL)
Mountain West - University of Colorado (Boulder, CO)*
Canada - University of Toronto (Toronto, Canada)
United Kingdom - University of Warwick (Coventry, UK)

*- indicates that high school teams are allowed to register at this site

High school-only sites:
University of Illinois (Champaign, IL)
Bellarmine College Prep (San Jose, CA)

Fields for each mirror site can be found here.

High school teams and HS-only mirrors
Beginning with ACF Fall 2018, ACF will allow high school teams to attend select mirrors of ACF Fall. Hosts interested in having high school teams attend their mirror should contact [email protected] to apply for an exemption. If this exemption is granted, hosts will work with ACF to assess high school teams' requests to play the tournament on a case-by-case basis. More information on ACF's updated high school policies can be found in this thread.

The following sites have been granted this exemption:
Mountain West - University of Colorado (Boulder, CO)
Southern California - UCLA (Los Angeles, CA)

We are also willing to provide the set for high school-only tournaments, as we have done in the past. Those interested in hosting a high school-only mirror of ACF Fall 2018 should express interest by email to [email protected].

The email address linked in the above post doesn't seem to exist yet? At the very least, both the emails I've sent asking for a distribution have failed, claiming that the address doesn't exist.

Good catch - the actual email address is [email protected]. I've fixed the original post accordingly.

Can we expect sites to be announced soon? We'd like to get an early start on collegiate outreach, and it really helps to have an actual tournament to invite teams to.

I made an (unannounced) decision to postpone site announcements one week to drum up more bids. Prospective hosts should expect to receive an update on their bid status this weekend. I apologize for the delay.

Speaking of which: I know of several schools that plan on hosting ACF Fall, but haven't actually submitted bids yet. If you're one of these schools, send me an email! Do it today!

The announcement has been updated to include the first slate of mirror sites. I will be contacting hosts later today to inform them officially. We are still looking for hosts in many key regions - these will be announced as soon as they are confirmed.

In unrelated news, the editors have asked me to announce two slight changes to the tournament distribution.

(1) The “painting” category, which as been renamed “visual fine arts,” has been expanded to include questions on sculpture as well as painting.
(2) Questions on opera are now considered part of the “music” category, rather than the “Other Fine Arts” category.

Because these changes were announced after some teams had already begun writing questions, teams will not be penalized if they disobey these instructions in packets sent before the first deadline (September 8). Packets submitted after the first deadline that do not conform to these changes will be returned to teams for correction.

Good question. As in the past, high school teams attending high school-only sites will not be required to write packets, and will not be eligible for the "New to Quizbowl" discount. ACF is still evaluating whether or not these restrictions apply to high school teams attending college sites.

I'm sort of out of the loop, but did no one in the south east put in a bid except GT? UCF and UF like hosting, and Atlanta is 7 hours away from UCF and from me. And I think that it's farther for NCF.

Well, I guess it sounds like a long day of driving ahead!

The packet submission requirement this thread is:

But every site announcement says any team with one player who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2017 is required to submit a half-packet.

Which is the true packet submission requirement?

The registration form says "two players." Since last year's policy required "two players," I imagine that it is the actual policy. The "one player" language probably comes from last year's Regionals announcements for which any team with a single experienced player was required to write a half packet.

Will there be a Florida mirror? Ideally at either UF or UCF? The first packet submission deadline is next week and I would prefer not to submit a pack without the knowledge that we can attend this tournament. The turn out for the Florida mirror last year was very good and there is no reason not the have one this year.

Daniel is right - the correct policy is the one described in this thread ("Two players," not "one player"). The tournament announcement template I sent to hosts contained a dated version of ACF's policy, so the fault is all mine. I will be notifying the hosts and asking them to make the necessary corrections shortly.

I mistakenly filled out the registration form twice when I meant to edit it, so it should be noted that only one of the listed Delaware teams on the spreadsheet is correct (the one listed as packet-optional). I emailed the ACF Fall email account about this nearly a week ago but no action seems to have been taken, so I'm posting this publicly both to bring it more into their attention and to allay confusion it may cause others.

Toronto has requested to host Fall, and while ACF responded positively to this, we've been emailing for a few weeks with no final confirmation. Twice now, I've sent an email that hasn't gotten a response for over a week. I'd like to know how much we'll be paying and get final confirmation that we will be hosting. The tournament is now only a month away.

Another packet deadline has come and gone. Still no updates.

Also, per conversation in the Discord, UCLA has apparently still not heard about their bid to host Fall. Apparently ACF's massive inability to communicate about things extends beyond just financial matters.

Hi everybody,

I need to apologize for the logistical issues that this tournament has suffered the last few weeks, which are entirely my fault. I have been neglecting the community-facing side of the head editor job for a bit, now, and the grievances taken up in this thread and elsewhere are due to this - my lack of responsiveness - solely. Tonight and tomorrow, I will be working with teams and hosts to resolve the issues I have caused.

On the other side of things, editing is going well, and I’m excited to see the set played in just a few weeks!

When will hosts get the info for what teams packets were used? I could use it to start making our schedule and to see how I need to set up bye rounds. I emailed the Acf fall email twice now with no response.

Best of luck to all teams in competition tomorrow! Remember that the set is being played on Sunday, too, so don't publicly share question content (or the questions themselves!) until Sunday night.

I’m super sorry but Wesleyan double misunderstood the DII qualifications, we were not DII eligible for Fall, but are for Nats.

Thanks to all the teams that played ACF Fall this weekend! I hope you enjoyed playing our set. Discussion threads will be posted as soon as I've received confirmation that the California HS mirror is over.
