Midseason poll

Post by 1.82 »

There hasn't been a poll in a while, so I'm doing one. This is the announcement of the midseason poll for collegiate teams.

Please do not post ballots in the thread. Do not vote for high school teams. You can vote for B teams. Ballots must contain 25 teams. E-mail them to me at [email protected] by March 25.

The results of the preseason poll, with first place votes in parentheses:

1. Yale Bulldogs: 349 (13), highest #1, lowest #2
2. Pennsylvania Quakers: 321 (1), highest #1, lowest #5
3. California Golden Bears: 317, highest #2, lowest #6
4. Chicago Maroons: 312, highest #2, lowest #6
5. Columbia Lions: 300, highest #3, lowest #7
6. Ohio State Buckeyes: 271, highest #4, lowest #13
7. Cambridge Light Blues: 228, highest #6, lowest #19
8. Minnesota Golden Gophers: 223, highest #6, lowest #20
9. Stanford Cardinal: 198, highest #4, ranked by 13 voters
10. California Golden Bears B: 195, highest #7, lowest #24
11. McGill Redmen: 183, highest #8, lowest #20
12. Chicago Maroons B: 179, highest #7, lowest #19

And I'd say this about Johns Hopkins prior to Robert Chu joining them. Also Oxford this year is sneaky good and should probably be ranked a little higher than in the pre-season poll. Daoud Jackson has the scariest metagaming proficiency I've seen by anybody not named Chris Ray and also is brutally good at specific niches in lit, history, and religion and basic generalism, and good luck getting a question ahead of them on any of the massive number of things George Charlson has read/seen (not to mention their sizable stable of excellent science players and subject specialists).

As long as we're promoting teams, I think UF is traditionally underrated because of their circuit. They finished 17th at last year's ICT and they had an unfortunate 3-way-tiebreak with Toronto and Chicago C push them out of second bracket at Nats. And they're returning their three highest scorers and adding Tracy Mirkin, who was a top-10 scorer at HSNCT last year. Incidentally, history was normally their worst subject and Tracy is a history player. I don't think it's remotely unlikely that they finish second bracket at both national championships with the new rosters.

And if anyone carelessly glosses over them because of their SCT scores, they finished 30th (ahead of PSU and Delaware) with just Taylor Harvey and a C team player.

They were top-25 last year and only got better. It would be a real shame if they got left out again.

One might be tempted to derive conclusions about the skill of all Chicago teams from the mixed results of the A team, but I would caution against this. In particular, Matthew Lehmann is exceptionally good and only improving, but all the players on the B are highly capable of converting tossups against pretty much any team. Underrank them at your peril.

Chicago B definitely looks like a good team. Will Luke be playing DI ICT with the B team or DII? As long as we're refraining from making undue generalizations about Chicago teams, does the C team have a set roster at this point?

The current plan is for Luke and Matthew to both play D2ICT. I don't know about the C team, but you can probably assume that one of the recent instantiations is representative.

On the topic of team hyping, Oklahoma's full A team will, for the first time since ICT two years ago, actually be together at a national tournament. Also, we have the number 6 D value. Just saying.

This is a reminder that votes are due in three days, so get them in quick so that they can be counted. I've received 13 votes so far and the results can only get more accurate with a larger sample. If for some reason you sent in a vote but haven't received a reply from me, let me know.

Hey guys, people are interested in having a writeup of the poll results similar to this one. I'd like to do this, but first I'd like to have your input about each team. Since ICT is coming up, time is limited, so I'll be hosting a roundtable discussion tonight at 6:30 EDT where we go through each team in the poll and discuss them. Please come to share your thoughts.

This discussion will be held on the #quizbowl IRC channel. To log in, follow this link, enter your nickname, and press Go. Thanks!

Did anyone record the log of the discussion? (and could send it to me) I tried to catch it on my computer during our practice but I lost connection.
