Thank you all for participating. The greatest song is Melanie’s “New Key.” I’ll see you next time, when I list 2000 songs that are not as good as Semisonic’s “Closing Time” and declare it the best song of the 90s.

I'm going to join the other guys and disagree with you here, Fred. Also I really think that if you're going with the one-song, one-artist rule, we should have mini play-in brackets for some of the more famous artists who have more than one song that could be a serious contender in the bracket and lack a clear "signature song" (ex. Bill Withers). I know it would lengthen the tournament a bit but some of the fun is kinda sucked out of things if you're deciding close calls like this one based on your own personal taste, popular opinion be damned. ABC is an incredibly popular song and would have the potential to make a very deep run in the tournament (along with I Want You Back and I'll Be There of course)! I mean so far you've been basically spot on with your cuts so far, but it's worth reconsidering play-in brackets for cases like this one. I know it's your game, your rules, but in the end we are the ones who are going to vote in the tournament so I do think we should have some say in really close calls for bracket cuts.

EDIT: I Want You Back is from 1969, sorry!

Y'know, Fred doesn't have to do this for our amusement, and I think it's misplaced to basically demand "Hey, do additional work based on my preferences re: a 50-year-old pop song". You have ample space to debate the merits of various Jackson 5 songs - in this very thread, no less! You're also free to debate whether less iconic '70s artists deserve an automatic space in the tournament as part of the greater conversation (there are people here who would chat about it, I'm sure), but the best option, if you're truly incensed at these apparent travesties of justice, is to make your own thread, bracket, conversation, space, etc. Don't look your gift horse in the mouth.

By the way, "I Want You Back" was released in the 1960s. I looked.

Clarification: this is, in fact, fun.

Let's not jump into the world of angry, rabid literalism over bits and pieces of a quiz bowl music thread, folks.

Oops, I forgot that I Want You Back was actually released in late 1969. My bad! This is Fred's tournament and he's free to make the rules as he sees fit (as I acknowledged in my previous comment). Mik, when I said that play-in voting would "delay the tournament a bit" I do mean just a bit, these cases don't happen that often and aside from joking grumbles when some people's favourite songs get cut, there haven't really been any problems so far, save for the Bill Withers one (also previously acknowledged). I would be more than willing to help set up play-in brackets for these situations, given that this was my idea.

I don't want to make it seem as if putting ABC over I'll Be There is a life or death situation; I'm really sorry if I came across too passionately! In the end this is just a fun game on the quiz bowl forums, it's not meant to be taken seriously at all. If I haven't said it before, I'm grateful that you chose to do a tournament for this decade Fred, I've enjoyed rediscovering 70's songs I haven't listened to in a while and adding new ones I'd never heard before to my playlist. All I'm saying is that if we're going to use the one song-one artist rule then situations like this are bound to happen at some point, and play-in voting is a potential solution (if there's enough demand of course).

For what it's worth Mik, I was considering doing a smaller-scale bracket on a particular musical genre or artist, but then Fred started this one and I didn't see the point in having two similar tournaments running simultaneously. Maybe sometime in the future!

Yeah, I don't think anyone was trying to make a big deal out of it. But if Fred is willing to put his cuts out there, than I think we have the right to critique them in a reasonable way if we disagree.

"Big Yellow Taxi" as the Joni Mitchell representative is unfortunate. I would have rather seen any song on Blue in the bracket instead.

More generally, I think this reflects a bias towards up-tempo, poppier songs, which, while tough to avoid, leads to a lack of truly contrasting matchups in the bracket.

Candle in the Wind 97 is not the second best song in history.

Joni Mitchell was a tough choice but the lyrics of BYT are very unique and well-written - “they put all the trees in a tree museum” is a top tier line in particular. It wasn’t an easy pick though. As far as a bias vs ballads, it could be true but I don't think so. I just picked It's Too Late over I Feel the Earth Move for Carole King, though I also did pick Burning Love for Elvis over Kentucky Rain and You Were Always On My Mind. All were very hard choices.

Bop vs. Sedated was a tough pick as well. Those were my two finalists for The Ramones.

I was unimpressed with Can. Their historical importance is clear but there's better prog rock groups in this period.

Separate from the previous cuts are these six songs which I put on the shortlist but judged as not quite good enough to make the final bracket, using a cut-off song that, frankly, probably isn't going to survive, either, but it'll hang in there for now. Anyway, adios to:

Andy Gibb - Shadow Dancing
Wilson Pickett - Don't Knock My Love
Ashton, Gardner and Dyke - The Resurrection Shuffle
Barbra Streisand - The Way We Were
Betty Wright - Clean Up Woman
Black Flag - Nervous Breakdown

I expect Neil Young solo will be combined with Neil Young and Crazy Horse, but will Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young be considered separately? Or are we down to one song from all for sure?

CSNY is in a weird area that I'll probably count with the rest of the Crosby+Stills+/-Nash formations.

Here's 80-some more cuts. I'm finally under 500 songs left to listen to for the first time, thankfully.

There's a lot of great stuff missing the cut because of the one per artist rule this time. Al Green's oeuvre is, in particular, a joy. Gram Parsons is an under-publicized figure in music that falls in the alt-country era. Blondie's a really important new wave act, both due to gender and due to its early place in that movement. Billy Joel's songs below are largely great and belie the criticism he catches in certain corners of music fandom. The Trammps is good dance music for the era, and Status Quo's a solid rock group. The rest are pretty obvious as to what they are and where they fall in history.

Al Green Take Me to the River
Al Green Love and Happiness
Al Green Call Me (Come Back Home)
Al Green How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
Al Green I'm Still in Love with You
Al Green L-O-V-E (Love)
Al Green Let's Get Married
Al Green I Can't Get Next to You
Al Green Look What You Done for Me
Al Green Here I Am (Come and Take Me)
Al Green You Oughta Be With Me
Al Green Belle
Al Green I'm a Ram
Al Green Tired of Being Alone
Billy Joel Piano Man
Billy Joel Just the Way You Are
Billy Joel New York State of Mind
Billy Joel Scenes from an Italian Restaurant
Billy Joel I've Loved These Days
Billy Joel Say Goodbye to Hollywood
Billy Joel Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)
Billy Joel My Life
Blondie Picture This
Blondie Union City Blue
