Mr. Brightside .vs. Paper Planes

Upon listening to Paper Planes, I started off thinking "this isn't really that bad, but I don't get the hype." By the end, I was converted. I now think to myself "this is bad and I don't get the hype." The most satisfying part is the ka-ching noise. Everything else makes me wonder how it made it this far. Mr. Brightside may be repetitive, but it always pops back up on the charts for a reason. It's a good, solid bopper.

Hurt .vs. Hey Ya!

Alright, this was difficult. Hey Ya has a lot more nostalgia factor than Hurt, but Hurt has so much more passion. I chose Hurt because the whole song is good. I literally got goosebumps listening to it again. Hey Ya is good, but doesn't give me that feeling. Also, as I'm listening to it right now, I feel like I'm already starting to get sick of it. I know someone earlier said that a cover shouldn't be the #1 song of a song that was done in a different decade, but it at least deserves to be in the top 2.

Mr. Brightside

Hurt

I would definitely vote for Hey Ya! over most songs, some of which I would vote for over Hurt – but this is a 1-on-1 matchup and the weight of Hurt renders Hey Ya! completely ineffective.

I enjoy Mr. Brightside, it is a great song, and The Killers are one of my favorite bands of the decade, but that is not the song of the 2000s.

Coinflip says Mr. Brightside, but I think this is an ideal finals matchup and would be amply satisfied with either song winning.

My vote is for Hey Ya! because it is a song that can transcend traditional preference boundaries in a way most songs (and especially Mr. Brightside) cannot and I feel that is an accomplishment that should be rewarded.

Alright alright alright alright alright alright alright alright alright alright alright alright alright alright Mr. Brightside is a good, fun song, but it's not THE song to define the decade. Nothing from that song is remotely as iconic as "shake it like a Polaroid picture". Hey Ya! wins, hands down, absolutely.
But if I can have two minor gripes:
1. I hadn't actually watched the music video Fred has linked each round until now, because why would I need to. And I get what they're going for with the Beatlemania thing, but I wish they hadn't layered a cheering and screaming crowd over the entire song. Very distracting.
2. Every karaoke version I've seen of this doesn't include all the main refrain "Hey ya"s as part of the main vocals. That's all well and good during the second refrain, but it's dumb to just expect the singer to be silent during the first refrain, and it's criminal to cut off the final refrain.

I want to vote for Mr. Brightside, if only because it winning would cause some of you people to melt down over a fun bracket about pop music, but also because it's a great, all-time classic. But I can't do it, I've got to vote for the slightly better song, which is Hey Ya!
