Re: ROUND ONE OVER: Best Song of the 2000s
Crazy by Gnarls Barkley vs. Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day | A better Green Day song would be able to pull off the upset here, but "September" just isn't as iconic as "Crazy".
Mr. Brightside by The Killers vs. Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson | Never underestimate the 12 seed! Just such a fun song in every way.
Jesus Walks by Kanye West vs. Wake Up by Arcade Fire | Someday soon the Happy Gilmore joke is going to cost this song my vote, but it's not yet.
Toxic by Britney Spears vs. Get Ur Freak On by Missy Elliott | Those strings.
99 Problems by Jay-z vs. Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean | This is such a tough call. No matter what wins this match-up, I think it would prevail in the Sweet Sixteen.
No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Paper Planes by M.I.A. | I'm not sure the repetitiveness of the verses in "Paper Planes" adds to it, but I still like it.
Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend | Aren't we all looking forward to the frickin' weekend so we can have some fun?
Chicago by Sufjan Stevens vs. Last Nite by The Strokes | I don't get Sufjan Stevens. [shrug]

Re: ROUND TWO, PART ONE: Best Song of the 2000s
Crazy by Gnarls Barkley vs. Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day: I love how "Crazy" does so much with so little. A simple drum loop, bass line, and some vocal effects, toss in some strings on the chorus, and that's all there is to it. CeeLo Green doesn't hurt, either. "Wake Me Up When September Ends", while a very good song, arguably isn't even in the top 5 on its album.
Mr. Brightside by The Killers vs. Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson: I'm voting for it, but I hope this doesn't turn out like that Grantland bracket. I never noticed how many pronouns were in this song.
Jesus Walks by Kanye West vs. Wake Up by Arcade Fire: One of the greatest beats of all time. By the time the last verse comes on, it blows Arcade Fire away. I only really knew "Wake Up" from the Where the Wild Things Are trailer before this. Spike Jonze and Arcade Fire make a good team.
Toxic by Britney Spears vs. Get Ur Freak On by Missy Elliott: This was really close. The two songs are sorta in the same vein musically, but not really vocally. If the Britney Spears song was "Womanizer", it might've had a better shot.
99 Problems by Jay-Z vs. Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean: Abstain
No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Paper Planes by M.I.A.: Songs for the Deaf is one of my all-time favorite albums, but "No One Knows" was never really a standout for me. "Paper Planes", on the other hand, I could listen to all day long. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUv_PJoq75E
Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend: I went back and forth on this so many times, but in the end, "Ignition (Remix)" is just too damn catchy to pass up.
Chicago by Sufjan Stevens vs. Last Nite by The Strokes: Not-that-funny story: I thought I had heard "Last Nite" before, but when I went back and listened to it for this poll, I realized I was thinking of Need You Tonight by INXS. Any mention of Sufjan Stevens will probably make me cry thinking of "Casimir Pulaski Day", but that alone won't get him the victory.

Re: ROUND TWO, PART ONE: Best Song of the 2000s
Crazy by Gnarls Barkley vs. Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day
Kind of a tough matchup here, but Crazy gets my vote. It's fun to listen to, and Cee-Lo has a pretty distinct voice that works well with the song. Had this been Boulevard of Broken Dreams, that might have flipped the matchup for me.
Mr. Brightside by The Killers vs. Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson
This is the hardest matchup thus far, hands down. I love both of these songs, awesome to listen to, etc. The chorus for Since U Been Gone is just too good though, so that's what we are going with. It kinda sucks, because Mr. Brightside could probably win H2H with most of the other songs in this round.
Jesus Walks by Kanye West vs. Wake Up by Arcade Fire
Jesus Walks has grown on me over the years, and Wake Up isn't really too special, and kinda bland.
Toxic by Britney Spears vs. Get Ur Freak On by Missy Elliott
Get Ur Freak On is decent, but pretty repetitive, Toxic is pretty iconic and just sets a certain mood, and the synths in the background go well with Britney's voice. Interesting they both borrow sounds from Punjabi music, though.
99 Problems by Jay-z vs. Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean
This is pretty easy. 99 Problems is a great song, Hips Don't Lie is merely good.
No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Paper Planes by M.I.A.
This is really easy. I'd take Paper Planes over most songs in this whole thing. It's such a really good song, and the gunshots and cash register sounds are an added bonus.
Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend
Ignition is so catchy, the lyrics are humorous, and it makes for a really good song. A-Punk isn't bad, but it can't compete.
Chicago by Sufjan Stevens vs. Last Nite by The Strokes
This easily takes the case for worst matchup of the round. There are some interesting parts of Chicago, but it's also pretty long and has bad parts too. I can't imagine I would be voting for either of these in the next round.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Time to Pretend by MGMT
It's a shame Time To Pretend's run has to end here.
One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Bad Romance by Lady Gaga
Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine
Lose Yourself by Eminem vs. Rehab by Amy Winehouse
Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz
Finally, Seven Nation Army has a chance at being eliminated.
Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West

Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z
Toughest decision here, considering how especially apples-and-oranges these two are.

Re: ROUND TWO, PART TWO: Best Song of the 2000s
Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Time to Pretend by MGMT
Not worth thinking about.
One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Bad Romance by Lady Gaga
Likewise.
Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine
Toughest choice of the round. The mechanical aspects layered over "Take Me Out"'s garage roots is pretty compelling, although I don't have a clue if the song is actually about anything. But I feel I have to give the nod to "Dog Days are Over"'s clarion vocals and joyous instrumentation.
Lose Yourself by Eminem vs. Rehab by Amy Winehouse
Quizbowl's anti-Eminem tack is slightly astonishing to me.
Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz
Same with the anti-White Stripes wagon. This isn't even the best Gorillaz song on the album.
Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West
Somehow, after voting against "American Boy" in the play-in round, I've voted for it every time since. Lil' Jon is insufferable, which makes "Yeah" insufferable. Also, that title.
Dashboard by Modest Mouse vs. 1901 by Phoenix
This is a fairly easy decision - "1901" is too deep in its indie weirdness to be particularly listenable.
Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z
There are better Beyonce songs out there.

Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West -- As someone who often has trouble identifying songs or their singers, I appreciate that for all its faults, "Yeah!" opens by immediately identifying both. More songs should do that.
Dashboard by Modest Mouse vs. 1901 by Phoenix -- This song grew on me after repeated listens for this poll. I especially like "I was patiently erasing and recording the wrong episodes/After you had proved my point wrong," even though I don't really know what that's supposed to mean.
Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z
Any or all of these vs. The Periodic Beeping from a Low-Battery Smoke Detector by My Upstairs Neighbors -- Even worse than their earlier forays, "Crying Baby" and "Loud Walking."

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Time to Pretend by MGMT Duh
One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Bad Romance by Lady Gaga Duh
Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine How are either of these songs still alive?
Lose Yourself by Eminem vs. Rehab by Amy Winehouse. Rehab is good enough to make me hesitate here, but Lose Yourself is a classic. I'm not the biggest Eminem fan, but that rhyme density though!
Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz. Still one of the weaker White Stripes songs, and this was a tough decision, but I guess I just really like The White Stripes.
Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West. I'm really glad that American Boy has had such a run, but it's time for it to lost to one of the most lit songs of the millenium.
Dashboard by Modest Mouse vs. 1901 by Phoenix Uh sure
Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z. Crazy in Love deserves to be among the top 8 songs here. It's catchy, fun, was a huge hit, and brough the most important pop star of the millenium to the next level. Voting it out now is criminal, but not as criminal as voting out Hurt.

Anyway, on to the ballot
Hey Ya
Bad Romance
Dog Days are Over
Lose Yourself
Seven Nation Army
Yeah!
1901 (whatever song wins this matchup will almost certainly get crushed next round)
Hurt (easily toughest match of the round, especially since Crazy in Love would beat most other songs still remaining)

Re: ROUND TWO, PART ONE: Best Song of the 2000s
Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Time to Pretend by MGMT | "The models will have children, we'll get a divorce / Find some new models, everything must run its course". "Time to Pretend" paints a wonderful picture, the joylessness of hedonistic excess. It's a terrific song. But come on. It's Hey Ya!
One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Bad Romance by Lady Gaga | "One More Time" just takes too long to get going. I'm not really a Gaga fan, but some of her best songs have grown on me.
Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine | I have mixed feelings about Florence. "Shake it Out" is an all-time great song, but I'm not nearly as impressed by "Dog Days".
Lose Yourself by Eminem vs. Rehab by Amy Winehouse | This vote basically gets decided by karaoke. Anytime I hear someone butcher Amy Winehouse, it makes me appreciate the original a little bit more. Didn't think I'd be voting against "Lose Yourself" so early, but this is a vicious pairing.
Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes vs. Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz | I ain't happy that "Clint Eastwood" isn't the Gorillaz representative, but "Seven Nation Army" is a bit too simplistic.
Yeah! by Usher featuring Ludacris vs. American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West | Listening to it start-to-finish, "Yeah!" is just a glorious ridiculous mess in all the best ways, but when we're trying to crown The Song of the decade, so many of those tiny imperfections mean I just can't go for it. So I'll throw a vote to Estelle, who is great.
Dashboard by Modest Mouse vs. 1901 by Phoenix | Raise your hand if you were all "Oh, so that's what that song is called."
Hurt by Johnny Cash vs. Crazy In Love by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z | Of all the lyrics in all the great songs, has there ever been a line that aged more poorly than "Hoping you'll page me right now"?
