MSU Fall Kickoff Tournament
The MSU Academic Competition Club is excited to hold our first high school tournament of the season on October 14. We will be running the WHAQ 2 set. This is a high school regular difficulty set and I believe it will be good preparation for Michigan teams advaincing on to other tournaments.
The tournament will be at Berkey Hall unless I get notice otherwise. This is the same building that many of our other high school events have been held at previously. The tournament will start before 9 am and there will be at least 10 rounds depending on what works with the field size. Though we are not running NAQT questions, we will be using NAQT rules on untimed rounds.
The initial field cap is 24 teams. We would like to have as many teams as possible so getting more rooms shouldn't be a problem. Teams can sign up to 2 teams at once and the remainder will be placed on the waitlist.
The payment structure is as follows:
$75 - First team
$65 - Second team from a school and on
-$20 - New to quizbowl (no teams from your school have attended a pyramidal quizbowl tournament in the last two years-- let us know if you qualify for this)
-$10 - WORKING buzzer system (If the system is broken, we will revoke this discount. Additionally, if your school said they were bringing a buzzer and didn't, we will ask for the discount back.)
-$10 - Travel over 100 miles one way, as determined by Google maps
-$20 - Experienced moderator (We would appreciate it if we could have more moderators so we could expand the field)
-$5 – Paying for the tournament the day of in cash. Please tell us ahead of time if you plan to pay in cash.
Minimum fee per team: $30
Please pay us by cash or check made out to “MSU Academic Competition Club” on October 14. Tell us if your team needs an invoice or you need to mail a check before the tournament. We will try to give all the teams invoices the day of the tournament. Please notify us if your team plan to pay after the tournament so we can get that process started ASAP.
Register by emailing [email protected] and please indicate how many teams your school is planning to bring and any discounts you believe you are eligible for. We hope this a great beginning of the season event and I personally look forward to seeing teams in East Lansing.
Current Field:
Detroit Country Day: Teams (2)
DCC: Teams (4) Buzzer (2)
Hillsdale: Teams (2) Buzzer (1)

Re: MSU Fall Kickoff Tournament
I'm glad to see that there's finally tournament info up for Michigan! Two questions:
1) Do QU tournaments count as pyramidal?
2) How many rounds are guaranteed?

1. Hey. I won't be TDing this tournament because I will be in Switzerland, but QU tournaments generally do not count as pyramidal. MSU will never run QU questions at our tournaments so you don't need to worry about that. Consult the first edition of WHAQ for what this version will look like in terms of difficulty and such.tksaleija wrote:I'm glad to see that there's finally tournament info up for Michigan! 2. This is impossible to know unless we know how many teams are showing up. At our tournaments historically, teams are usually guaranteed at least 10 games but this number may fluctuate down to 9 or up to 11 depending on the field size and other constraints. At this time, expect at least 9 games.

QU is as pyramidal as it gets. If your pyramid is one block tall.

I made this as a freshman, I realize my name is stupid. I never even played Bioshock.
