Naveed Bork Memorial Tournament
I have decided to re-use some amount of material from my scrapped CO history set, in addition to a bunch of new ideas I've come up with recently, for a Scattergories-inspired tournament I will be calling the Naveed Bork Memorial Tournament. It will be available sometime this summer, possibly by CO if there's demand. The distribution will be as follows (24 tossups per packet):
6 History
2 Religion
2 Myth
4 SS/Thought (of some kind)
2 Auditory (any)
2 Visual Arts (any)
3 Lit
3 Geo/Ce/Mixed/Other Ac
Difficulty may be somewhat variant and can best be characterized as "very high" - I will not specify anything further. There will be somewhere between 8 and 10 packets, and I'll be writing all of them.
EDIT: Entry fee is $10 per player
EDIT 2: Sign-Up Sheet for CO mirror

Omitted that the material is being recycled from my abandoned history tournament. Thanks for the catch!Cheynem wrote:What does "re-use some amount of material" mean?

Demand seems sufficient for this to be run at Chicago Open, so it shall be so.

If I make it to CO, which is still undecided, I would probably like to play this. The distribution is really too good to pass up... well, for my tastes.

Scattergories was quads, so I am thinking of running this as quads as well - it spans the whole distribution except science, after all.

Re: Naveed Bork Memorial Tournament
I'm loath to promise too far in advance, but probably mid-August. Format would depend based on initial expressed interest, which will probably also depend on how many mirrors this gets at side event weekends.CPiGuy wrote:Do you have an idea of when this would happen / would it also be quads?Periplus of the Erythraean Sea wrote:I definitely plan to!Cheynem wrote:I won't be at the Sunday for CO--are you thinking of maybe doing a Skype mirror afterwards?
Completely unrelated: this is an all-humanities tournament with material in a lot of subject areas. In wake of various "who is the GOAT" discussions in the Quizbowl History Forum, I am open to offering this tournament's content (including revisions after the main CO mirror, plus contributions from others after) as material for creating packets for a hypothetical exhibition between various players whose names have been proferred as the GOAT, and who all happen to be high-level pan-humanities generalists with limited science knowledge. Ideally, you would generate something like a standard 16-tossup mACF "non-sciences" distribution with this method, and produce a few packets, with some of the more experimental questions taken out and some contributions from other writers. I would not intend this hypothetical exhibition series to be a definitive statement of "this person is clearly The Greatest" but merely a sort of "clash of the greats" to compare some of the game's greatest talents and get them to go head-to-head, tossups-only, no teammates.
The Skype mirror of Bork would take place before this event.
EDIT: lol nvm jordan is playing

I'm confused...would not a large chunk of possible GOATs be at the original event in the first place?

Re: Naveed Bork Memorial Tournament
This is just a proposal - presumably they'd not play this if this were to happen. It would all be contingent upon agreeing to things ahead of time, for the purpose of this exhibition. I have no issue if it doesn't happen.Cheynem wrote:I'm confused...would not a large chunk of possible GOATs be at the original event in the first place?

For what it's worth I'd be tentatively interested in a Skype mirror of this and pretty much any summer open.

Will Mason (tentatively) and I are playing this and looking for two teammates. Preferably, these would be people who know the non-history part of the distribution, but we're not terribly picky.

Re: Naveed Bork Memorial Tournament
In response to the recent discussion over tossup length, I will note that a lot of tossups in this tournament are quite long - the average length is probably around 8.5 to 9 lines TNR. Some are a fair bit shorter (close to 7 lines) and some are a bit longer. I will defend this for the following reasons:
1) [Perhaps somewhat selfishly] Writing this set has mainly been an intellectual experience, and I want the questions to be able to convey that intellectual experience as well.
2) It's tossups-only, so the effect on length shouldn't be AS bad (games of 3M, which had monstrously long tossups, still didn't take that long)
3) I feel like the lack of bonuses in tournaments like this can/should be compensated by more "fleshed out" tossups
Nonetheless, I will be policing verbiage and trying to not waste space/editorialize too much.

Not that I'm playing this in person, but I tend to like longer tossups for side events. I enjoy being able to think.

Re: Naveed Bork Memorial Tournament
I'm hard-capping the field at 12 teams. Would like to fill out all of these slots, since that lends itself to a nice schedule: prelims of 5 games in round robin, then rebracket into top and bottom for three crossover games, leaving one packet for a final.
I'll be assigning free agents to teams on Friday if they haven't found teams by then.
Also, this tournament is 90% done. It's definitely happening.

People are now assigned to teams. However, we need one more staffer, and there is exactly one more than 48 players (12 x 4). If anyone would be ok dropping to staff, that would be awesome!

If a fifth person were added to my team, perhaps we could take turns staffing? (I ask, not having asked teammates....). I wouldn't mind missing a couple rounds to help it run smoothly.
