PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
This is a tentative announcement for a PACENSC, a Pokemon side event written by Ithaca High School, which will hopefully be finished in time for HS nationals. We're aiming for six or seven packets of 20 power-marked tossups. The questions should be around 7 to 9 lines in 12-point Times New Roman during writing, including bolding for powers.
The distribution will lean towards Generation IV and older games, but there will be a fair amount of content through Gen VII. The questions will be written in a similar vein, and hopefully difficulty, to those from past Pokemon packets, and while we'll be cluing from the anime, TCG, manga, competitive battling, spinoffs, and other sources, the main focus will be on the games.
We're going to try to run this at either HSNCT or PACE (or both, depending on interest) free of charge. More details to follow. Shoot a reply if you're interested in playing!

I'll be super down to play this and I'm staffing PACE so I'd prefer if it was read there. Will there be questions about Pokémon Adventures and the metagame?

You know I'll be here for this. Seeking a teammate with interest in winning.
EDIT since it was unclear: Is this getting run as singles? doubles? or something else?

I'd also be down to play with this anyone if this is doubles or whatever. For the record, I beat Dylan to a Pokémon clue this year .Robert Williams Avenger wrote:You know I'll be here for this. Seeking a teammate with interest in winning.

How much of the implementation details of the games are important (I can imagine some sort of nasty questions about the damage calculation, PRNG, or personality values)?

Re: PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
Those technical details rarely show up in questions based on all the Pokémon packets I've read (and I think I've read every one on the trash archive). I don't think it is possible to write a uniquely identifying question with a clue like "When defeated, this Pokémon gives 3 Attack IVs" because that is true for many Pokémon. Also, the damage calculator actually gives a range of values and probabilities determine the exact damage output. I don't know a lot about the RNG of the games aside form looking up a couple of glitches that involve RNG and egg hatching. Does the Celebi Egg glitch from Gen II with Beat Up count as Hex manipulation or RNG abuse?tototavros wrote:How much of the implementation details of the games are important (I can imagine some sort of nasty questions about the damage calculation, PRNG, or personality values)?

We won't be using many of these details at all, since it's difficult to even use any of these coherently in a tossup.tototavros wrote:How much of the implementation details of the games are important (I can imagine some sort of nasty questions about the damage calculation, PRNG, or personality values)?

Re: PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
I am currently working on the logistics of this tournament. Hopefully we'll be able to run it at both national tournaments.
To help with planning, I've made a simple Google Sheet where people can put their teams and which nationals they'll be attending. If you are a free agent, I encourage you to reach out to someone else to form a doubles team instead of soloing, simply because that will make logistics that much easier.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing (refer to post below for signup sheet)
If anyone has any tips on running a side event, please PM me. I want to make sure that we have enough rooms/buzzers/staffers to accommodate all interested players, and I'm not entirely familiar with the logistics of events like these.

Thanks. I think that was a problem with my school email. Here's a new link that should work, but let me know again if it doesn't: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
edit: Also, we're probably going to need additional staffers for this. I've added an additional column for this purpose. If you are interested in the set but don't want to play, please consider helping out! The more staffers we have, the more teams we can accommodate.

Re: PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
Update: we are halfway through writing all of the tossups (a little more than 70 at this point) and are on track for finishing and organizing all seven packets by the time HSNCT comes around. Casey is getting the venues sorted out and the grind continues for us writers. We expect a 0.1 increase to our PPB to make up for the studying that we could be doing while we write silly questions about pocket critters.

Re: PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
The questions are done at this point. We ended up writing six packets' worth (120), which we're currently in the process of editing.
Most of the questions are comfortably in a "misc" category with clues crossing over Generations and games. As such, the distribution is pretty loose and nebulous, though we're making sure similar answer lines and clue sources don't get bunched up in individual packets. The answer line distro per packet looks like:
5-6 Pokemon
2-3 Locations
2-3 Characters
2-3 Mechanics (moves, abilities, etc.)
2 Items
With the rest being common link or difficult-to-categorize misc answer lines. The questions are I think quite difficult to power (though we'll see if anyone ends up proving me wrong). It's looking like we're set to run this after scrims at HSNCT, so look forward to seeing everyone there!

Re: PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
I'm going to close the field for the HSNCT side event because I think we have enough players for 12 teams (10 teams, 3 free agents, and 1 "maybe" team). Free agents should talk among themselves about forming teams, if possible, because I'd rather not sort people into teams if that means there may be someone who won't be able to play.
I also want to make sure that everyone who signed up to play is actually planning on doing so. If you are definitely down to play PACENSC on Friday at around 9:45PM, bold your team name in the spreadsheet (and if you don't have one, make one). If you are signed up and you now realize that you won't be at HSNCT, or you'd rather play Geography Monstrosity, then please remove yourself from the field.
We have six packets, so I think we'll just run a round robin with two brackets of 6, with cross-bracket finals rounds using the final packet. If you have any questions, shoot me a PM.

My partner (who signed us up) is now unable to make this because of travel logistics, making me a free agent. If anyone is signed up but not paired up for the one at HSNCT lemme know, otherwise I'll have to defend spread attacks without that sweet sweet 25% damage reduction

Aaaaaand we're headed back to the airport because there's a problem with the plane. We'll probably land at around 8:30, so the chances of us getting to the hotel by 9:30 are slim. We're still holding out, though.

(I wasn't one of those people - just someone who has run logistics for several tournaments and knows how distracting that kind of thing can be.)

So yeah, this happened. Tejas and Andrew Wang cleared the field to win 6-0. Thanks to all the teams that came out to play; hope everyone enjoyed the set even if the logistics were a little messy.
We unfortunately don't have complete stats because we forgot to ask the moderators to keep individual stats, but we'll do what we can to get something up soon. If you have any questions about the set or would like a copy, PM or email me at [email protected].

Re: PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
Because PACENSC at PACE NSC is in less than a week, I wanted to start organizing logistics. Since there aren't any scrimmages Friday night, which is when we're running it, we're going to have to use participants' hotel rooms and buzzer sets. I've made a new sheet on the original signup doc (link in OP) specifically for PACE. If you're interested in playing, feel free to sign up, make a clever team name, and let us know whether or not you'll have buzzers that we can use, and if you'd be willing to allow us to use your hotel room to play. If you've already signed up, please indicate this information on the sheet.
Right now, we have 3 or 4 teams and 3 free agents. I'm going to cap the field at 12 teams, which is what we had at HSNCT, though we can run it with any even number of teams. I'd like to encourage free agents to reach out to each other, or other people, to form doubles. Also, if you're signed up, we're assuming you're going to be there. One of the problems I had at HSNCT was that I had no idea how many teams were going to be there, since not everyone who originally signed up was there, and there were people who wanted to sign up on the day of the tournament. Due to the logistics of side events at PACE, specifically regarding buzzers and rooms, I don't think I'll be able to accommodate teams that want to sign up on the day of the tournament, so please sign up on the sheet as soon as you know whether or not you'll be able to play.
We'll be getting into Chicago sometime in the afternoon on Friday. The tournament ran really late at HSNCT, so we're planning on starting at 8:00PM, meaning that it'll probably end at around 10:00PM. We'll congregate at my hotel room, and when I find out where that actually is, I'll post here. Be aware that this is during the coaches conference.
As for stats from HSNCT, I don't foresee anything being posted anytime soon because our stats are incomplete, and we're focusing on studying for PACE NSC. After the tournament, though, we'll see what we can do. If you're curious about your own stats, you can shoot me a PM and I'll try to see if I can give you more details.

Re: PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
Just to be clear, right now the field cap is six teams, because we have three rooms, and two of those rooms will have to play slapbowl because we have one buzzer set. If you want to help us expand, and if you want to play with actual buzzers, then consider volunteering either your room or your buzzer set(s); we'd greatly appreciate it.

Re: PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
Okay so this tournament will be held in rooms 377, 376, and 374, or just 377 and 374 if we end up having a four-team field. We will congregate directly outside of the rooms at 8:00 and then get started. For now, if you could confirm that you'll be here by bolding your team name in the Google Sheet or PMing me. Since no one volunteered their buzzer sets, one room will have buzzers and the rest will use slapbowl. See y'all then!

Re: PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
We ended up reading all 6 packets as a shootout.
Final scores:
Adam - 320
Alex - 470
Andrew - 140
Harry - 170
Harris - 660
Harris also wins the neg prize for negging an astonishing 35 tossups. For the record, Adam negged 34, ten of those being in one round.
We might have more detailed stats (for real this time) available some time after PACE. Thanks all for playing!

Re: PACENSC ~ A Pokemon Side Event
Thanks for writing this. It was the most fun I had playing in a while even if the 20 point powers and 0 point negs really played to my advantage . I would like to know how many things I and the other players powered. Very few things went dead which was awesome to see.Vivit wrote:We ended up reading all 6 packets as a shootout.
