ATHENA at Lexington (MA) HS (4/1/17)
The Girls in Quiz Bowl Committee is pleased to announce we will be hosting the Academic Tournament for Highschool Education N’ Achievement, (ATHENA) at Lexington High School in Lexington, MA on April 1st, 2017*.
The purpose of the tournament is to promote female involvement in quiz bowl. We have noticed that there seems to be a lack of female participation in the activity as well as a lack of questions that recognize female achievement. By hosting this tournament we hope to portray quiz bowl as a welcoming community and promote questions that aren’t the same basic ones you see in every set but actually encourage people to study about women’s accomplishments.
We will be using NAQT’s IS-164 set with some alterations:
All computational math questions and some trash/sports questions will be replaced with committee written questions with answer lines pertaining to important women in traditional quiz bowl subject areas (history, literature, art, science, myth, social studies, and trash).
The field is capped at 24 teams, but could increase with more interest.
Fee structure:
$65 base fee for each team
-$5 buzzer discount (max 2 per school)
-$15/100mi distance discount
-$10 experienced staffer discount
Teams interested in registering can either reply to this post or fill out this google form, https://goo.gl/forms/FwdzLuFPF1HyObNu2
Please include the number of teams you are bringing, how many fully functional lockout buzzer systems you can bring, as well as how many experienced staffers you can provide. If you do plan on bringing staffers, please inform me whether said staffers would like to read and/or scorekeep, and whether they will be able to provide a laptop. In addition, please provide a team contact, as well as his/her cell phone number and email.
On the day of the tournament, registration will be from 8:15-8:45, and rounds will hopefully begin at 9:00 after the opening meeting. We hope to see you there!
*We recognize that April first is not the most ideal date to host a tournament that is supposed to promote such an important idea but it was the only date that works for all members of the committee.
Current Field (Teams/Buzzers/Staffers):
Acton Boxborough (2/0/0)
Boston Latin (2/1/0)
AMSA (2/2/1)
Phillips Academy (1/0/0)
Lincoln Sudbury (2/1/1)
Bromfield (1/0/1)
Lexington (2/1/X)
James Jusuf (1/0/0)

Acton-Boxborough is definitely interested in coming, as long as MIT's March tournament doesn't also use IS-164.
Put us down tentatively for 2 teams, 0 buzzers, 0 staffers.
Thanks for putting together an interesting tournament, all of us here at AB are looking forward to it.

MIT's March tournament will be using Maggie Walker's GSAC, so no worries about the IS set overlap.

PACE (the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence) has awarded ATHENA platinum certification which means that the top 25% of the field will qualify for the PACE National Scholastic Championship, to be held from June 10-11 at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare outside of Chicago!

This is really great. Would any QB women be interested in organizing a similar event in the NYC-PA-NJ-DEL area this spring? Or, if that is too soon, what about next fall? I don't want to co-opt the female dynamic of this effort, but I would be more than willing to help out.

I'm hoping next year we could mirror this tournament format nationally, if you, or females in the area would like to get in touch I'd love to talk more about expanding.Antrobus63 wrote:This is really great.
