Terrapin XXIX at Georgia Tech (November 13, 2016)

Post by 1.82 »

The Georgia Institute of Technology will host a collegiate quizbowl tournament on Sunday, November 13, 2016. This tournament will use this year's Terrapin question set, written by the nationally renowned Maryland Academic Quiz Team under the dutiful supervision of quizbowl wunderkind Jordan Brownstein with assistance from noted scientist Billy Busse. This is a regular-difficulty tournament; more information on the question set can be found here. This is a closed collegiate event and eligibility guidelines for this tournament are the same as those for ACF events, except that teams composed of students all from the same high school are also permitted to play. I, Naveed Chowdhury, will direct this tournament.

Location and Time:
Games will take place in the Instructional Center building on the Georgia Tech campus. The opening meeting will start promptly at 9:00; rounds will start immediately thereafter.

Fees and Payment:
$120 base fee
$10 discount for each capable moderator with working laptop
$10 buzzer discount (maximum 3)
$10 travel discount for every 150 miles between your school and the Georgia Institute of Technology, as per Google Maps

The minimum fee is $50. Please bring payment on the day of the tournament in the form of cash or a check made out to the Georgia Tech Academic Team. If we deem that your moderator is not capable or your buzzers are not working, you will not receive a discount.

Registration:
Please send me an e-mail at [email protected] with the number of teams that you intend to bring and any buzzers or staffers that you will supply. If I do not respond within two days, feel free to send another e-mail.

Field (teams/buzzers/staffers):
South Carolina (2/2/2)
Auburn (1/0/0)
Georgia (2/1/0)
Florida (2/1/0)
Florida State (1/1/0)
Tennessee (1/1/0)
Georgia Tech (TBD/1/—)

It has come to our attention that hosting this tournament on its regularly scheduled date would require the payment of $245.60 to the university but holding the tournament the next day would not. As a result, this tournament has been moved to Sunday, November 13, 2016. Hopefully this does cause any inconvenience for teams.

South Carolina still plans on bringing a team. Is there any word on a field update?

Congratulations to Florida A for winning the tournament in an exciting one-game final over Georgia A, coming back from a 165-10 deficit to secure the game on the final tossup and winning 270-255. Thanks to all the teams that came out and to Eric and Bryn Douglass for staffing.

After the tournament, a white iPhone charger and aviator sunglasses were found in room 211. If you think either of these might be yours, please let me know.
