Where Are You Going to College Next Year (2015-2016)

Post by 1992 in spaceflight »

Since it's late enough in the year, I would like to present the annual "where are you going to college next year" thread for prospective members of the class of 2020. As the staff of the board have noted in previous years, the purpose of the thread is to give answers such as "I am going to [insert non-hypothetical college x here] and will be playing quizbowl there." It is not to humblebrag, hem, request help on your decision or anything like that.

Hope to see some of you at college tournaments in the near future!

I'll be going to Caltech (I like to think my science tournament in Feynman's honor helped) in sunny Pasadena, California. I look forward to doing as much with the quizbowl team there and the circuit in SoCal as possible.

Some Missouri student notes: Parth Parikh of Hannibal will be attending Vanderbilt University next fall. His teammate Tim Quintanilla is attending Carson Newman University in Jefferson City, TN.

I'll be attending Swarthmore College, where I will try to revive (?) the quizbowl club. Regardless, I will try to be available to staff Philly-area tournaments.

There hasn't been a team at Swarthmore for a while, but that being said, if anyone else is out there, let us know and the PA quizbowl community is happy to help revive one there or at any other of the many SLACs in the state that used to have clubs!

So from asking around today, I noted that Stefan D'Sa is headed to Yale and Anthony Stoner is headed to Notre Dame. Several players in our NAQT State field are graduating and attending in-state schools.

That's great news! If you'd like to reach out and get some information about the club, I'd be happy to answer questions by PM or email. More generally, I'd be happy to do this for anyone attending next year, or even just applying--and double more generally (to stay relevant), I'm sure this is true for club leadership at all the extant clubs people are discussing.

I will be attending Auburn University next year, and attempting to revive the quizbowl program there a bit. I know of at least one other person there who has an interest in playing next year. If you or anyone else you know is attending, please feel free to contact me.

Zakk Waddell and Ross Wallace from West Point both got full-scholarships to play Quiz Bowl at Wallace State CC.

Wallace State is going to have one seriously dangerous Community College team for the next two years.

I'll take this opportunity to point out that Michigan State also offers a scholarship ranging up to full tuition+room and board+annual stipend for doing well on a test they offer which basically consists entirely of quizbowl knowledge, covering all categories and closely aligning with a standard high school canon. Quizbowlers should definitely take advantage of all the opportunities they can find to turn their knowledge and skills into great opportunities like these.

I know MSU's QuizBusters show used to offer scholarships to each season's winning team. I don't know of anyone who ended up taking said scholarships, though.

As far as I knew, it still existed while I was there, but I didn't knowingly meet anybody who had one of them. Also, the amount is certainly less than the literally life-changing opportunity from the other scholarship.

I'd also like to endorse this scholarship. 5 members of our team last year won the scholarship so there is definitely a correlation between quizbowl and scholarship success. If any prospective Spartans have questions about the test, feel free to PM me.

For what it's worth, the teams in the Alabama College Bowl League (the JUCO league in the state) all offer scholarships to play for their teams. In fact, that's how I paid for college back in my day.

It's sad that this is the exception. Imagine a world where colleges all valued this game and offered lucrative scholarships and incentives to the best players to come play for them....
