Canadian Player Poll 2016: We Have Prizes!
Hello! In the spirit of a certain other Top 25 poll, I hereby welcome you to Nick Penner's first annual Canadian Player Poll. The rules are simple: vote for your top 25 of active collegiate players (active being defined as having played in at least one tournament this year AND having never made a retirement announcement) who either attend a Canadian University OR have Canadian citizenship and attend school abroad. If you are unsure of the eligibility of a certain individual, ask in this thread and someone will help you out.
Incomplete/jokes-that-aren't-funny ballots will be discarded. Anyone who feels qualified to vote (Canadian or not) is eligible to by either messaging me or emailing me at penner_nick [at] yahoo [dot] ca
Unlike a certain other Top 25 poll, this one has PRIZES:
1st overall wins a 2-4 of their preferred domestic beer (or non-alcoholic beverage)
2nd wins a $10 Tim Hortons gift card
3rd wins Bon Cop Bad Cop on Blu-ray
4th through 10th win patriotic Canadian mugs
11th through 20th win poster-sized copies of The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
21st through 25th win old issues of Macleans
You have until Victoria Day to submit your votes.

Can I have a list of all Canadian citizens playing quizbowl in the USA? I actually don't know anyone except Will Nediger (and now Rafael Krichevsky).

If you were born on Canadian soil and you're not there as part of diplomatic staff, you're Canadian. Period. Now you know more about Canadian citizenship law than Ted Cruz did before 2013.

Re: Canadian Player Poll 2016: We Have Prizes!
So is our WUSTL third scorer Will Mason. I'm not sure how serious this poll is, but I guess I'll talk him up briefly. This year, he regularly got about 30 PPG on regular difficulty sets and nearly 20 PPG at both Nationals, even though he's essentially a history specialist on a team with two good history players (Richard Yu and me). He also gets a reasonable amount of lit., arts, and other humanities topics.Muriel Axon wrote:Friendly reminder: I'm a Canadian citizen.
Anyway, I don't know where exactly Will should fall on a Top 25 Canadian Player ranking, since I don't know how many other "hidden Canadian" players there are. That said, even in the most drastic scenario that maybe 5-8 players on the overall Top 25 poll are also Canadian, I think Will safely places in the top 25.

I'll note that Tamara Vardomskaya should be on everyone's ballots because she led the Chicago C team with 23 PPG and 7 powers at the stacked main site of "stanford housewrite" and put up 21 PPG as part of the Chicago C team that finished 20th at ACF Nationals.

Re: Canadian Player Poll 2016: We Have Prizes!
What if, on his great southern journey, Jordan Palmer presented me with some sort of honorary Canadian citizenship award for being a great host to Canadians? Am I then eligible? I am both:
*friendly to Canadians, especially Jordan Palmer
*from southern Louisiana, which automatically means Canadians love me
I don't have any form of paperwork to prove my honorary citizenship, except for a Canadian copy of the entire Cornish Trilogy that Jordan gave me as a friendship offering, so hopefully that's good enough.

Very gladly!Sigurd wrote:Will someone from VCU please come and make a plug for Mr. Akhil Garg!
Akhil beat Auroni to all four science tossups at ACF Nationals 2015 and beat Michigan to all four science tossups at "stanford housewrite" this spring (by the transitive property, this means that Akhil is better at quizbowl than Michigan). Akhil is also the nicest, most friendly Canadian of all time. He should be #1 in your heart, if not this poll.

Here are some people I'd like to nominate (in no particular order), because I'm too lazy to rank 25 people:

Aaron Dos Remedios
Joe Su
Brendan McKendy

Re: Canadian Player Poll 2016: We Have Prizes!
Next year we should have a separate ballot for the Canadians most skilled at quizbowl and the best Canadian community members so we can properly recognize people who are awesome people, but not necessarily the best quizbowl players. This poll was a mishmash of people voting using both of those criteria and leads to people like Ming Ho Yee, who would be at the top of most "best community member" ballots to shafted.
For future player polls, I would also suggest restricting the eligibility to either Canadian citizens who have at least played a quizbowl tournament held in Canada that academic year or to Canadian citizens who either went to high school/university in Canada. As good as people like Shan Kothari, Eric Xu, and Will Mason (I was the only one to vote for him apparently) are at quizbowl, they're basically completely disconnected from the Canadian circuit.

Still broken, considering how Derek still managed to get the #1 spot.Masked Canadian History Bandit wrote: Canadian citizens who either went to high school/university in Canada.
