Midseason College Poll

Post by Cheynem »

This is the announcement for the midseason college poll for the 2015-2016 season.

Please do not post ballots in the thread, but feel free to ask questions about player eligibility, team formation, etc.

Do not vote for high school teams. You can vote for B teams. Ballots must contain 25 teams. E-mail them to me at chey0004 AT umn DOT edu by January 25.

Remember you are voting based on how the best possible (but still realistic) team would do at a hypothetical nationals-like tournament.

The preseason top 25:

1. Michigan Wolverines
2. Chicago Maroons
3. Stanford Cardinal A
4. Maryland Terrapins
5. Penn Quakers
6. Yale Bulldogs
7. Columbia Thundercats
8. Minnesota Golden Gophers
9. WUSTL Slugs
10. MIT Imagine Dragons
11. Illinois Fighting Illini
12. Stanford Cardinal B
13. Berkeley Golden Bears
14. Harvard Crimson
15. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
16. Northwestern Wildcats
17. Virginia Cavaliers
18. Alberta Canadians
19. North Carolina Tar Heels
20. Chicago Maroons B
21. TIE--Louisville Cardinals and William and Mary Patriots
23. TIE--Brown Bears, Dartmouth Fiends, and Oxford Dons

If anyone's interested, some contending teams PPB's on each set can be found here.

I'd like to point out that Oklahoma, who received no votes in the preseason poll, put up 19.81 PPB at Penn Bowl. They should be on your ballots, folks.

I will point out that the info for Columbia B is very inaccurate - Eamon hasn't been on the team for the past 2 years, and the Penn Bowl team was Wilton Rao, Kailee Pedersen, Saul Hankin, and Shreyas Vissapragada, the latter two of whom were missing at Missouri Open.

If we're updating lineups I'll note that Oxford A in future probably features Spence Weinreich in place of Charlie or Zach who fourth scored for us at Penn Bowl and Missouri Open (listed in HSQB as Cambridge Open) respectively.

Scrimmaging against this team and seeing them fairly often, I can also say that even the Penn Bowl PPB is skewed. They were playing without their Fine Arts/RMP player, Finn Bender. He may also be their third best overall player.

We plan on bringing (at the very least) the same three-man team that played the finals of 2015 MUT to Regionals and SCT this year. Centennial 2014-15 player Anant Mishra may also be on the team. Not sure what this means to anyone but I guess I'll say I've been studying pretty hard since Penn Bowl.

If we're doing roster updates I suppose I should note that Spence Weinreich will probably be playing on Oxford A in future, likely in place of Charles/Zach, who were our fourth scorers at Penn Bowl and Missouri Open (on HSQB as Cambridge Open) respectively.

Do note that our PPB at Missouri Open is a bit inflated, since Morgan Venkus jumped on board our team making us an open team. Morgan is not enrolled at Northwestern, so he won't be playing any tournaments with us.

The Columbia B and Oxford info has been updated. I appreciate the updates!

The current projected lineup for Stanford B includes Tabitha Walker at ICT and Kyle Sutherlin at ACF Nationals, in addition to James, Nathan, and Freed. (In other words, they'll be eligible for the UG title at ICT, but not at ACF Nationals.)

EDIT: Jay Bhasin has replaced Tabitha on the ICT team, so Stanford B will not be eligible for the UG title at either national tournament.

Of course, our team at Penn Bowl was lacking in Grace and I. Obviously, it's no great shakes if I'm not there. But Grace is the shining green light of the Yale Quizbowl team.

Just wanted to note an error in the stats compilation--our bonus conversion at Penn Bowl was actually 23.09. Doesn't change our rank for that tournament, but does make us a bit more competitive with the two teams ahead of us.

For what it's worth, one of our MO wins was entered in the stats as a forfeit win, so our numbers are really from 11 games rather than 12, which changes our per game stats a bit.
