BrainBusters Fall, Ithaca (NY) HS, Sat, Nov. 14, 2015

Post by Ithaca Cricket Ump »

I am pleased to announce that the FOURTH ANNUAL BRAINBUSTERS FALL QUIZBOWL TOURNAMENT will take place at ITHACA HIGH SCHOOL in ITHACA, NY on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2015.

Exact format will be determined by the number of registered teams, but all teams are guaranteed a minimum of 9 matches. Morning rounds will consist of some sort of quasi-seeded pools, with afternoon pools consisting of teams that have performed at approximately the same level in the morning rounds (so that newer and less-experienced teams will play others in that situation in the PM.) Trophies will be given to the top 4 teams overall and the top-finishing Small School (500 or fewer students total, grades 10 through 12, at a public school with a non-selective admissions policy as defined by NAQT). The top 15% of teams (rounded up) will qualify for the 2016 NAQT High School National Championship Tournament at the palatial Hilton Anatole in Dallas over Memorial Day Weekend (info), and at least that number will also qualify for the 2016 PACE National Scholastic Championship at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont, IL, near Chicago (Sat-Sun, June 4-5). The top 15% of Small School-qualified teams (rounded up) will qualify for the 2016 NAQT Small School National Championship, also being held at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare (Friday, April 29 - Sunday, May 1).

To register, please E-MAIL ME at [email protected] - the most important things we need to know at the moment is HOW MANY teams you are registering (this can be amended up until Wednesday, November 11 by e-mailing me and letting me know) and WHAT DISCOUNTS (see below) you are claiming. You are encouraged to take as many discounts as you can, since we need to have an adequate number of buzzers and staffers to run the tournament efficiently.

BrainBusters Fall will use NAQT question set IS-150, which is a different question set than the one being used at both Delaware Valley HS's Tri-State Tussle and SUNY-Buffalo's Bull Bowl on October 17, so teams are allowed (and encouraged) to play both BrainBusters Fall AND one of those tournaments as well.

We will set an initial cap for the field at 36 teams. This is not a hard cap - it can go up depending on availability of staffers and interest among schools. We have filled out caps in most earlier editions of this tournament, so make sure to get your registrations in early for a guaranteed spot.

The base fee will be $80 per attending TEAM (not school). The following discounts can be applied to that base:

- $5 for each FUNCTIONING buzzer system that your team brings for use at the tournament ("functioning" means a working power cord and a minimum of 8 working buzzers).
- $10 for each STAFFER your team brings to help run the tournament. Experienced staffers will be assigned to read games, with newer staffers assigned to scorekeep or help in the tournament headquarters room. Staffers can be coaches, non-playing students, parents, chaperones - anyone not playing, really - but be forewarned that staffers will be bound to a room and will not be able to follow their team around.
- $10 NEW SCHOOL DISCOUNT - applied to any school that has not competed at BrainBusters Fall previously.

All of the above discounts are applied per SCHOOL, not per team.

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me. We're looking forward to seeing you at IHS on November 14!

PACE has granted BrainBusters Fall 2015 its highest certification (Platinum), and as a result the top 25% (if a 36 team field, the top 9) overall finishers in the field will qualify for PACE NSC 2016 in Chicago.

Field updated above. The field is now over halfway full (19/36), although that 36 cap is soft and can be raised if we have sufficient staff and buzzers.

Only 9 guaranteed spots remain in the field. After those 9 spots are filled, interested teams will go onto a first-come, first-served waitlist. There is a POSSIBILITY that this tournament's field could expand to a hard cap of 48 teams, but that is completely dependent on how many teams take staffer and buzzer discounts, and how many volunteer staffers we have. If you're planning to play this and your school's name isn't on the list above, you're not registered yet - drop me a line and let me know that you want in.

Field updated in original post. There are 7 guaranteed spots left in the tournament, and it is possible but unlikely that the field will be expanded beyond 36 teams, so if you are planning to attend, please let me know ASAP.

Ithaca A won its third BrainBusters Fall title in four years by defeating Brighton A (Rochester, NY) 430-190 in a one-game final. Ithaca finished with a perfect 11-0 record, and Brighton, in only its second non-MasterMinds invitational tournament appearance, finished 10-1. In a rematch of last year's final with the opposite result, Delaware Valley A (Matamoras, PA) defeated Lisgar Collegiate Institute of Ottawa 335-270 for third place. The other two HSNCT qualifiers were Small School champion Lakeland, who finished 5th overall, and Fillmore, the Small School runners up who finished 6th. The other PACE NSC qualifiers were Ithaca B, Mountain View and Wallenpaupack, and Mountain View and Geneva A qualified for SSNCT along with Lakeland and Fillmore. Full stats will be posted sometime this week.

Complete stats are posted at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/3216/. Casey Wetherbee of champion Ithaca A finished as the #3 overall scorer (#2 of the people who played the entire tournament) despite not negging a single time during the course of the tournament. The only other case I know of this (top 3 scorer in a tournament never negging) was Brianna Prislipsky (current U. of Pittsburgh, ex-South Range), who went 39-39-0 in a 14-game tournament in 2013. I'm guessing there are other examples, but maybe not. Anyone know of any?

At the Johns Hopkins Invitational last year, Gabe Guedes from Richard Montgomery had a 46-16-0 stat line in 10 games, leading the tournament in scoring.
