Now taking my hat off as the person who runs the schedule for a second, UVa would like to reserve November 14th for an NAQT IS-set, as well as March 19th for the NAQT Virginia state championship.

Georgetown is interested in hosting a tournament this fall, likely on an IS set. We'd like to claim October 31 for the tournament, but like VCU's date, it's tentative pending the college schedule.

Blacksburg will not be using an HSAPQ set for the BHAI in January. We are saddened to learn that HSAPQ will not produce a 20/20 set next year, as this set typically gave VIrginia teams an extra opportunity to play HSAPQ produced toss-ups before VHSL competition. We will seek to mirror a 20/20 set in Southwest Virginia for our January tournament.

The Charter School of Wilmington is tentatively claiming the date of October 17th for our invitational fall tournament on the BASK question set. More information (hopefully nothing pertaining to a date change) will be announced in the coming weeks.

Since I've been informed that the SAT date is actually the 3rd, I'd like to claim 10/10 for this tournament instead, if that's not too much trouble. Thanks!

As a general point, I thought the high school quizbowl community had decided years ago that SAT dates don't matter that much and shouldn't be impediments to tournament host dates, as there are six of them (too many to all be avoided) and no individual SAT date would draw away more than a handful of juniors or perhaps sophomores (little impact on field health). Has the consensus shifted since then?

Moving Maryland's tournament to 10/10 would create 4 back-to-back tournaments in the DC/MD area, which seems suboptimal.

It's been my experience over the years that the following negatively impact on a tournament. In order of impact on a tournament from greatest to least impact:

1. Major Holiday on or near tournament date (Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break)
2. Insufficient lead time on tournament announcement
2a. Tournament too early in season, resulting in insufficient lead time
3. Standardized testing
4. It's Academic taping

And to put some approximate numbers on things, field sizes could be reduced by 50% or more by holiday or insufficient announcement. I've seen field sizes reduced by about 25% due to standardized testing. And I think there's typically about a 10% reduction from It's Academic taping.

If the standardized testing date can be avoided without reverting to a holiday or moving the tournament too soon to be properly advertised, there's no good reason not to avoid it.

Maybe this is because I've spent most of the past few years as a staffer and playing in college, bu you also have to strike a balance between scheduling high school events and college events, Mr. Gilbert. Scheduling things for 4 weekends in a row strikes me as a very bad idea and as something that can easily burn out staffers who want to help.

Also, as one of my compatriots in MOQBA said recently, there are enough conflicts WITHIN quizbowl. Having to avoid every potential conflict that the school year brings seems like a foolhardy choice, to me. Having to avoid an It's Academic taping when It's Academic would never come close to reciprocating the action in a million years is not something tournament organizers should worry about, unless they're running a Pre-Nationals tournament and all of their teams are taping It's Academic.

Each program certainly needs to assess the impacts of all factors when choosing a date. It's nearly impossible to pick a date that isn't on a major holiday weekend, isn't a standardized testing date, and isn't an It's Academic taping date.

The reason to not put avoiding taping dates near the top of the list is that they tend to not have more than a minimally significant effect, even in the later rounds of the tapings.

The lack of reciprocation is a side issue. Taping schedules are arranged in April of the previous school year, so first and foremost, it'd be impossible to avoid most tournaments since no one yet knows when they will be. Secondly, It's Academic has an issue no other organizer has: television studio time. I continue to be amazed that people think the producers should not conflict with other tournaments even though such a thing is nearly impossible for the producers to accomplish.

I should note here that the exact date for our Georgetown tournament is still contingent on where ACF Fall ends up in the college schedule. If ACF Fall ends up on 10/31, we'd be willing to consider a move to 11/7.

Hello, Richard Montgomery would like to claim the dates of November 7th for a mirror of SCOP Novice, and April 2nd for a mirror of BISB. However, due to problems with school sponsorship, these dates are tentative, and may change, along with the packets.

Following a discovery that Penn Bowl is on October 24th, Johns Hopkins University would like to move our Novice Tournament to October 3rd. It will make use of NAQT's IS-149A set.

Also, the tournament on April 16th will indeed be using an NAQT questions (specifically, the IS-154 set).

Cavalier Classic this year is almost certainly going to be run on IS-150, which is the corresponding set that it's been run on for the past 3 years (IS-140, IS-130, IS-120). We would prefer it if Georgetown used the IS-148 set, but that's obviously up to NAQT's discretion. I'll confirm the sets being used once I get on the phone with NAQT.

Blacksburg will be mirroring SCOP Spring on 1/16. Also some of the NAQT sets have been decided according to NAQT.com .

I see
VCU on 10/17 as IS-148
New Kent on 11/21 as IS-149A
Johns Hopkins on 10/3 as IS-149A
Centennial(MD) on 11/8 as IS-151A
Georgetown on 10/31 as IS-150
UVA on 11/14 as IS-150
VCU on 12/5 as IS-152
Johns Hopkins on 4/16 as IS-154

If we can avoid hosting on the same set, that would be quite helpful. Also, to clarify, is VCU hosting with BASK Questions or IS-148? Regardless, we're willing to move to whatever set minimizes conflicts between sets & maximizes attendance for everyone.

In that case, IS-148 would be fine, particularly if there's no other scheduled host in the area. If that works for everyone (including NAQT), then that works for us.

Wilmington Charter would like to claim February 20th for BMAD (Battle for Mid-Atlantic Dominance) which will run using SCT-D2. This tournament is intended for teams who are planning on attending a national tournament in the Spring and would like to play a challenging set to prepare. More details will be announced once we have received final confirmations on the date from our sister school (the school we share our building with). Our school has given us the thumbs up already.

We are claiming Saturday January 9 as the likely date of the Maryland History Bee and Bowl at Liberty High School in Carroll County.

EDIT: The Capital Region Championships will once again be at Centennial in Ellicott City. It will be on March 12.

Back for RM, our Spring Tournament has been moved to April 9th, and is now a mirror of Harvard Fall. The Fall tournament date is still tentative.

Due to a conflict with VAMUN on November 14th, Cavalier Classic is switching dates with New Kent's Trojan Academic Tournament. TAT will now be on 11/14, while Cavalier Classic will be held on November 21st.

Perhaps Blacksburg is cursed in selecting question sets this year. First HSAPQ announced they would not write a regular season ACF style set this year, and now Kirstin Strey has informed me that there will not be a SCOP Spring set this year. We are seeking other options at this point and will announce our new question set for our January 16, 2016 tournament as soon as we can. Anyone who has suggestions for a good set for us to use may e-mail me at [email protected].

Thanks!

VCU will not be hosting VCU Spring this year. Instead, we will be hosting VCU Season Finale on April 30.

Cody,

Will that still be on CALI, or will you be using a different question set for the Season Finale?

Virginia Tech has postponed its BISB mirror to EDIT: 1/30 given the impending inclement weather.

Clearly this is a very early posting for priority and appears on the 2015-16 thread instead of the 2016-17 thread.
We will re-post this in the proper thread when available in May or June.
Incredibly, Centennial High School has received inquiries about the timing for our fall tournament (using an NAQT A set). This year, we hosted 90 teams.
We have secured Sunday November 6, 2016, one day after the SATs. Please keep this date free when considering your tournament dates.
