VCU Open @ Berkeley (Aug 8)

Post by njsbling »

UC Berkeley will be running a mirror of VCU Open on Saturday, August 8. This tournament is "open", so anyone (high school, college, graduate school, post-college) can play, although please note that the tournament difficulty is "near collegiate nationals level" (not accessible to those who are newer to quiz bowl). Registration will begin at 9AM at 100 Wheeler Hall and we plan to begin at 9:30AM.

Fees/Discounts:
Base Fee: $100 per team ($25 per person)
Buzzer discount: $10 per working buzzer
Travel discount: $30 per 100 miles traveled (one way) (will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis)
Minimum entry fee: $40 per team (or $10 per person)

Please use this google form to register: https://docs.google.com/a/berkeley.edu/ ... 8/viewform

More information about the set can be found here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =8&t=17222

Field (6):
Jugurnautha's Golden Earrings
People's Liberation Army
Stanford (2)
Tintinnabulation
Usual Suspects

The UC Berkeley Quiz Bowl Club is a student group acting independently of the University of California. The student organization is the host of the California Cup and takes full responsibility for the guests.

At the moment the form returns a message that "You need permission: This form can only be viewed by users in the owner's organization."

I'll be in the area, but haven't done anything quizbowl related in a few months. Let me know if your team needs a fourth!

I assure you, there's much more interest than that.

Make sure to put your name down as a free agent in the "Berkeley" tab in this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... 1162129896

No man, what I mean is Stanford wants to bring 2 teams. Unless you know something I don't...?

Ah well ok then. I didn't think of you acting on behalf of Stanford since it's an open tournament and all.

I see how that could have been ambiguous. But yeah, I wasn't commenting on the viability of this event.

Also, are there plans for side events?

Right now we don't have plans for any side events- is there a certain one you'd like to run?

We should definitely plan on running SHEIKH.

If SHEIKH is being run, I would most definitely be interested in playing.

I'm also interested in playing SHEIKH. Are any other side events being contemplated?

SHEIKH is the only side event that we are running. pm me your email address and I will send you the logistics email when I send it out to everyone.

So the main site is using bounceback bonuses. How do we feel about trying that? I'm all for it.

I would prefer to avoid using bouncebacks, in the interest of getting both VCU Open and SHEIKH completed by a reasonable hour.

Thanks to everyone who played our set! I'll have a discussion thread up later this evening in Collegiate Discussion - I think it's fine to put it there, since I trust nobody's going to pull a Stephen Hines and try to cheat for a side event/Skype tournament. If people would rather have a private forum, I'll request one of those.

EDIT: Upon receiving some advice, I will in fact attempt to vaccinate the set against Stephen Hines by setting up a private forum.
