Two things:

1) The first post has been updated with information about fees (just $80 per team!)

2) Here's a spreadsheet for side-event team formation: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0. I just noticed that We Have Never Been Modern has been postponed, so we can do Tricon instead of that.

i need teams for all of the side events. I know some science trash and history so I don't think I'm completely useless there.

Has Modern officially been postponed? I thought I heard that it was being revived.

Modern hasn't been postponed and I'd personally like to see it mirrored here (and hopefully not relegated to some post-Tricon spot).

Since I'd like to play Modern, I have no problem with it running it in its original slot on Sunday.

I'll play anything and everything, but don't expect much but comic relief for AVOGADRO'S NUMBER.

In that case, we'll do Modern on Sunday as originally played. I've added it to the spreadsheet.

Yeah, I'm planning on quads for the side events, because of the limited number of rooms.

I have a SHEIKH team (Will/Carsten) and VICO team (Bentley/Dylan). There might be spots left on those teams; check with non-me people to see.

Still looking for a team for Science and Modern. I'm not good at either but I know some stuff.

I may be late to the game on this, but I am interested in playing this mirror and I am looking for a team. I am a science, history, and geography player, and my strengths in those subjects are biology, US history, and US geography. I am also interested in playing any side events held that weekend. Thanks!

With the signup of the Sethlene team, there are 7 teams officially signed up. If the Andrew/Nolan/Kurtis team officially signs up, then the field will be at a 8 teams, which is a perfect number. There are also two free agents (Noah Prince and Casey Bindas) and two open spots on the aforementioned teams, so the free agents might want to get in touch with those teams.

I'm probably not looking closely enough, but it's a little difficult to figure what the side-event schedule is (if any has already been determined.)

Can someone (Will?) move this information to the first post, so it becomes easy to find?

Thanks

I agree it's a good idea to move it to the first post, but as of now, the schedule as I have heard is:

SATURDAY
Main Event
SHEIKH (history)

SUNDAY
Avogadro's Number (science)
VICO (thought)
We Have Never Been Modern (Bentley's thing)

Card, of course, is subject to change.

As Eric mentioned in the CO thread, we still have 3 editor packets that are completely blind to all teams. I think there's probably sufficient interest at this field to hear them, right? If we split up the field into 8 teams, we could do a sort of "playoffs" type thing (quarterfinals, semifinals, finals) with those 3 packets. Or something else, if that's too complicated.

I didn't realize the 7th team wasn't officially signed up, and I don't want to inflict byes at a centrally written tournament. If someone can confirm (hopefully soon) that we'll be an 8th team, rather than a 7th team, that would be great.

The Nolan team is officially signed up, so you would indeed be an 8th team.

It's unclear what cost, if any, there will be to play the three side events. It looks like you'll be safe if you bring $50 ($20 for the main event, $10 for each of the side events). So do that.

The current plan on Sunday appears to be VICO (eight tossup-only rounds), Modern (seven tossup-only rounds), leftover CO (three tossup/bonus rounds), and Tricon (probably around five short, 30-tossup packets) if time.

I'm going to assume that the 20-tossup-only rounds take about 20 minutes, the leftover CO packets take about 1.5-2 hours total, and each Tricon round takes about 20 minutes because of shorter questions.

If we start at 9, Vico should be done by around 11:45. Assuming we start back up at 1 after lunch, Modern should conclude around 3:30. Leftover CO should be done by 5-5:30. Tricon would be done by 7ish.

I suggest the following:
* The organizers of the side event should have schedules ready to go.
* Sunday lunch should be shortened to about 30 minutes, which is enough time to get and bring back takeout at a place like Potbelly, or to order something and eat it while Modern is being organized/during the first round. Eating takeout/delivery during the first round of Modern seems like the best way to keep things going.
* Jerry should figure out a format for the CO packets. I'd suggest just having two or three rooms that read through them in a free-for-all format (tossups for anyone, shout out bonus parts). I'd enjoy playing these, but don't really see a point in making it competitive. I'll gladly defer to whatever format is agreed upon if others disagree.
* If Tricon is happening, we should figure out how many packets there are and what the format will be.

I will have a "schedule" of sorts for Tricon once the final tallying of packets occurs. I assume what we're doing is a shootout with the writer (or a volunteer) of each packet reading until we're done or we're sick of it or whatever.

I added my name to the "free agents" thing on the spreadsheet, but I'd like to note here that I'm in need of a team for SHEIKH. I can't really be relied on to get many points, but those that I do will probably be in euro history.

My plan was to do a sort of "draft" (which can be done online or via email before the tournament) and have 8 teams that would play a quarterfinal/semifinal/final structure playoff. It would be like a 3-round single-elim tournament with consolation games so that everyone would get to hear all the packets anyway. This may sound complicated, but it's actually a very easy schedule, and I predict we'd get through it in under 2 hours; I thought it would be fun to make it competitive, since we do have a pretty good field for it. If that's more elaborate than people would care to have, we can also just go with 3 or 4 rooms reading to whomever.

With the official signup of the 8th team, the field is now closed. People should sign up for side events on the spreadsheet, so I can accurately gauge interest and tweak the formats/schedules accordingly.

I'd apprecaite if teams form up for We Have Never Been Modern soon so I can figure out the format. If we have 4 teams it will be a double round robin. With 6 teams it will be a single round robin followed by some sort of finals structure (perhaps single elim in order to get to play the most packets, but we'll see).

Also, Jerry and I have room in our Ann Arbor hotel room for 2 more if anyone's interested. Shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]. Edit: These spots have now been filled.

I'll be emailing around a format for the remaining 3 CO packets. Basically, we're going to do an email draft so the teams are set up to play right away. There will be 8 teams and everyone will play all 3 packets. I'll need two more readers to make this happen so if you're interested in reading, please email me ([email protected]).

I would like to participate in any and all of the side events being held alongside this tournament. (I am a free agent for these events, but for some reason my computer won't let me add my name to the list in the spreadsheet.)

There's a chance that I may miss the first round of Modern (which I'm staffing) but I'll be there for the rest.

As I've said over email, I'm scrapping the whole mini-tournament plan for various reasons; I'd like to get an hour sometime on Saturday or Sunday to just read the tossups to 3 or 4 teams of interested people.

To flesh out an earlier post by Andrew Hart, here are the updated pricing guidelines for this weekend:

VCU Open: $20 a person assuming you have a four person team, could be less with buzzer discounts
SHEIKH: $10 a person
VICO: $10 a person
Modern: Free
CO Packets: Free
Tricon: Your soul

Looks like presumably a maximum of $40 (perhaps slightly less) will get you through the weekend (assuming you're playing everything).
