Re: ACFNATIONALS - A JRPG tournament
Hey, this is super late but here's a google doc with team spreadsheet stuff
here
I have it set so that comments are allowed because people love to vandalize, but as someone who doesn't really have a life I should get to those and upgrade the sheet relatively quickly. If you've expressed some interest in the thread and also haven't said you won't be at HSNCT you're probably on the free agent list
Please tell me if you want to be/not be on this list
also if you can think of a better team name than what you've given you we can be convinced to change it.

Re: ACFNATIONALS - A JRPG tournament
Hello, I am a quizbowler from ucf who will be staffing hsnct. I would like to ask if I could play. Issue is I have no teammate currently, so if anybody needs one I'd love to join him/her.

I can staff this if it doesn't conflict with the geography or science tournaments.

I have added comments onto the spreadsheet asking for a place on the tournament. Hopefully, this message gets through admin board since my others are strangely delayed.

Hey guys, so ACFNATIONALS is now fully written, if you're currently on the free agent list please either form a team or inform us that you are not playing ACFNATIONALS.
(Note this list currently contains Mike Hundley, Alex Liu, Alice Chou, MIKE CHEYNE?, and Peter Torres)
Ike Jose says you should also try to find a team to potentially fuse with in the case that we somehow do not find enough rooms/staffers or due to team numbers not being that great
ALSO: If you have not given me some sort of contact email and do not think I have a way to easily contact you, please send me some sort of way to do this so that you can get a logistics email at some point.

Re: ACFNATIONALS - A JRPG tournament
Hey guys,
I'm also posting in here to let you know that this tournament will be conflicting with anything else on Saturday night, Hopefully you knew that already.
Here's how logistics will work: We will congregate outside on the lobby level of the conference room foyer at 7:45pm. We will play the audio packet in separate rooms at 8pm pronto. This will be a shootout format. It should take about 50-70 minutes and will consists of 20-25 questions. After that we will begin the tournament proper. There are ten packets. We will try to get done before midnight, but lol bedtimes.
We are in need in of at least two moderators for reading / scorekeeping. If you're not going to that science event, it would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully if we can get those, and (make sure those rooms are secured!) we won't need to consolidate teams.

To steal the thundaga of the writers:
Congratulations to Dylan and Tejas for going X-1 to win, surviving an epic match against Aaron and I to avoid a four-way tie. I'm pretty sure Jason and Rama as well as Laferbrook finished X-2, and we finished X-3. Dylan and Jason scored a lot of points.

This tournament was some of the most fun I've had playing quizbowl, take that as you will. I laughed! I cried! I laughed some more! Thanks to Ike, Billy, and Wang for a spectacular set. Additional shoutout to Tejas for being an awesome teammate: neither of us could've won this thing on our own, the field was quite stacked.

Re: ACFNATIONALS - A JRPG tournament
Just to be clear, I didn't play the playoffs because I was very tired and Matt Jackson had arrived from the bullpen, not because I didn't like it. Despite not playing many JRPG's, I felt the clues and ideas were very good here, and I got (or was beat to by people who knew more) some stuff I knew. I actually thought it was a fun intellectual exercise to have so many common links, as if no team knew it decisively you could figure it out by using mental conclusions eventually.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed this tournament and was glad to play it and get possibly my all time favorite buzz. Similarly to mike Cheyne I declined to play playoffs because I was falling asleep at the buzzer

Re: ACFNATIONALS - A JRPG tournament
Speaking from the other side of the standings, these questions were really fun for us also. They were hilarious and very well written with a lot of consideration put into how to make them pyramidal. I especially appreciate the tolerance displayed for my long, rambling, overly descriptive wrong answers. (I think on that one tossup, had I been prompted, I was prepared to describe the entire plot of The Seventh Saga.)
It's one thing to have a goofy fun idea for a tournament and try to write it. It's another thing to put in the time and effort to make that goofy tournament a great experience for all involved. Great thanks to all the writers.

Re: ACFNATIONALS - A JRPG tournament
Hello everybody,
Thanks for playing this tournament and giving it unanimous praise. I had a blast writing this tournament sporadically over the last two years with Billy Busse, Andrew Wang and occasional guest writer Austin Listerud contributing.
I had many reasons for writing this tournament, the least of which was giving myself the opportunity to try to play through every single JRPG. Unsurprisingly, I failed and did not play every single one, but I did hit a pretty wide swath of the more well known ones. In writing this tournament, I wanted to put a smile on everyone's face by asking about some game that was dear to their childhood or otherwise special. This tournament was probably your only opportunity to convert a wide swath of great memories into quizbowl points!
After this tournament is mirrored at the NSC - if it is, I will post the set and the audio tossups. I will also post an answer key along with the name of every song used in the audio tossups since you'll probably never figure out what song was used for the tossup unless you know them ahead of time.
Also, I will make a recommendation of all the great games I played in the last two years (and the shitty, shitty ones Wangster and I also put ourselves through) once the set is clear - hopefully you are motivated to go out and discover the magic that I discovered in them. Even for me, I know that I have many, many, more games on my master list to play - I'll be lucky if I can beat 20-30 of them in the upcoming year.
Best,
Ike
PS - Sorry to Rob for misinforming you of your loss.

Re: ACFNATIONALS - A JRPG tournament
This is probably not true! Given the amount of money I spent on study materials for this tournament this year alone, I have way more than enough ammunition to write my own tournament (and am currently attempting to recruit a couple of others to help). I wanted to get an idea of what a prospective field could and could not handle so I didn't make the tournament outrageously difficult or too easy. If you're curious, CULEX is 3% done. I probably won't make an official tournament announcement any time soon but I enjoy writing questions on these sorts of things, so yeah.Ike wrote:This tournament was probably your only opportunity to convert a wide swath of great memories into quizbowl points!

Re: ACFNATIONALS - A JRPG tournament
Jake, I fully intend to write a fan sequel to this tournament (maybe I'll call it Crimson Echoes).
For now, I think I'd like to take a try at just writing it myself - after spending a lot of time to play through the games I don't know very well. Perhaps we'll combine forces at some point, or perhaps we'll just both make tournaments that can be played at the same time and place (i.e. when there's that crucial critical mass of jrpg fanboys).
Those speculative plans aside, I cannot offer enough superlatives for this tournament. It was one of the best executed events I've ever played.

Oh trust me, I know how this is. It's super hard to remember all the details of all the games you have played if you have played a hundred or so of them. Easy clues from games I played two years ago used as lead-ins were much harder for me to manufacture buzzes on than hard clue from game I am an absolute fanboy of.Craise Finton Kirk Royal Academy of Arts wrote:I may be willing to make some contributions to one of these tournaments. Wanted to throw in my appreciation for the tournament as someone on a lower team. Unfortunately at that point of the day, I was exhausted, and asked to retire before playoffs. I had fun meeting everyone and playing the well written questions!
The audio packet was also awesome. A formal trash music Imaginary Landscape could be a lot of fun!

Re: ACFNATIONALS - A JRPG tournament
Hey guys, the packets are being waiting approval for the trash part of archive but here's the audio link
Actually I think i stuck a zip with the packets too
The key has a list of the songs used in the tossups
I did not write very much for this set, but if you want to yell at me for any answers, here's questions I was responsible for (note that since a lot of the tossups were common links)
Round 3
Causing a chandelier to fall
Round 4
"Tossup 0"
Round 5
Vampire Castle
shipwreck (mostly me)
Round 7
Lucifer
Dark Worlds (mostly me)
Round 8
Fat Chocobo
Completing the Pokedex
Round 9
Lance of Longinus
Super Training
Round 10
freezing time
rangers (mostly me)
Pokestar Studios
Velvet Room
I apologize if you got screwed in the later rounds when my stuff started coming up. I also apologize for not finding enough clues to write a tossup on the reptite ending to Chrono Trigger
If you have any issues with facts or wording or stupid giveaways, or thought that stupid tossup on Japan was dumb, blame Ike Jose
