Drake, Lovsted, So, and Su are coming down this weekend. We'll play one, if not both tournaments together. If a NAQT category player (e.g. Dennis Beeby) needs a team, I'll gladly kick myself out and let them join this team. But we'd still want to play as a school for one of the days.

I will definitely be coming up to Waterloo for this tournament and Delta Burke (barring any unforeseen circumstances). Just wondering if these tournaments will be styled so that we must make our teams before coming over, or we will create teams that morning (a la pick-up game). Also, I think Delta Burke is Regionals minus difficulty, but what is the difficulty of NASAT?

After NASAT, there will also be a playing of The Worst Trash Tournament Ever, Eliza's 2015 MSNCT Trash tournament, and other Eliza Grames/Melanie Keating et al. gems. Entry will be free of charge. Format is yet to be determined, you the audience should decide. There are NO sports questions unless it's about an athlete's other shenanigans.

Delta Burke is actually about Fall difficulty, or even maybe Fall minus difficulty.
Charles is correct; DB is meant as an introduction to QB for CC students who've mostly never played, so this field of Canadas should be answering toss-ups right after (what I hope are somewhat interesting) lead-ins. What follows the "for 10 points" is definitely Fall minus difficulty (e.g., "For 10 points name this large nation north of the US.").

PS--There are actually three separate toss-ups on the "On to Ottawa Trek." Sorry.

I will be serving as TD for this tournament. To register, please email me the following information: your team roster, number of staffers, number of buzzers, and a phone number I can call in the morning if something goes wrong.

It's easier for me (and we can start earlier) if teams are formed before beforehand. However, I don't mind a small number of people registering as free agents. (Obviously, it defeats the purpose of registration if zero teams and twenty free agents register. Please don't do this.)

For now, I'm capping the field to 9 teams. This could be raised if there's enough interest and staffers.

I'll update this post with the field as soon as I get registrations.

Field (8)
Peter, Jay, Aaron, and 1 other
Jordan, Aayush, Adam
Patrick, Rein, and 2 others
Ottawa (Dennis, Shelby, Rodrigo, Chris)
Waterloo (2 players)
3 teams, composed of Leslie, Brian, Huma, Joe, and 6 others

Total players: 27

So with Joe's posted (but not e-mailed, apparently) team, that's 4. Is there going to be a flood of last minute teams(?), 'cause 4 is kind of a small number...

If the field grows to say 6-7 teams (too many to just have a straight-up double RR), are we looking at one RR and playoffs or just soldiering through a really long day with a RR no matter what? And how many packets in the NASAT set, anyway?

Aayush and I have contacted a few other clubs, so we might get some more registrations. But based on previous summer tournaments we've hosted, I would expect 5-8 teams total.

If the options are a really short schedule or a really long one, I'd be inclined to go with the shorter schedule. After all, there are side events and another full day of quizbowl on Sunday.

But it all depends on how many teams actually register. I can also tweak the field by having Waterloo people play on a house team or as free agents (provided we have enough staffers), or asking existing teams to split or merge.
minusfive wrote:And how many packets in the NASAT set, anyway?
Last year's set had 20 packets. So did all the ones going back to 2010.

EDIT: I've been notified that this year's set will also have 20 packets.

Based on my plan to do a HMS Pinafore-style swap of books I have with the book prize pool, I predict that players will be playing for such elegant titles as "El Amor en Los Tiempos del Colera" (English edition), Howard's End (rest of Howard not included), Northanger Abbey (reflex buzz on any mention of "baseball") and Persuasion, Synge plays (Playboy of the Western World, etc) and Ms. Dalloway.

Right now we're at 6 teams, so the schedule looks like a double RR, giving everyone 10 games. I'm not expecting any more teams, but I will continue to accept registrations until 6PM EDT on Tuesday June 23. (An 8-team schedule is a RR and 4/4 rebracketing, also giving 10 games. 7 teams does not work; we would have to merge two teams or add a house team.)

For now, I'd like to ask teams that have registered to confirm buzzers, rosters, contact information, and optionally a team name; I'll be emailing reminders over the next few days. Also, if you're still looking for teammates, keep in mind that Waterloo has 3-5 free agents, but that depends on how (or if) we rotate staffers.

So I am planning on bringing 17~ books to this tournament and swapping them out with the prize books. However, since there may not be 17 books to switch (especially if the organizers share the same love of Howard's End my bookshelf does), bring academic/literary books (NOT Manga, NOT Danielle Steele, NOT Calendars, NOT Penthouses) you want to trade for one of the following:
Howard's End (x2)
Wide Sargasso Sea
Mrs. Dalloway
Love in the Time of Cholera
Measure for Measure
Anil's Ghost
The Playboy of the Western World
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
Tartuffe and The Misanthrope (in verse, a style in which they were originally written)
Homer's Odyssey (In prose)
The Skin of Our Teeth
Persuasion
Northanger Abbey
The Old Curiosity Shop
Long Day's Journey Into Night
Evangeline

I have the following and would be happy to trade any of them for any of the books on your list:

A Season In Hell/The Drunken Boat
Juno And The Paycock
Demian
Daisy Miller
Far From The Madding Crowd
A Midsummer Night's Dream
The Kite Runner

What's the deal with extra free agents? We have 7 on Saturday and 6 on Sunday, and would be willing to take on others, or join others.

Who do you mean by "we have" (the tournament? McGill?) and who is willing to take on others (I assume McGill...how many players does McGill have now?)

McGill, McMaster, and Huma have agreed to form 3 teams. With the addition of a house team, the field now has 8 teams. So the schedule will be a RR and 4/4 rebracket, giving everyone 10 games. There's still room for last-minute free agents; by my count, there are 4 open spots.

Sunday has a similar situation, with 8 teams and room for 3-5 more free agents.

I'll send out a logistics email later tonight.

EDIT:
In the logistics email, I wrote: Hi everyone,

Please meet at 8:30 AM in MC 4059 (different from our usual HQ; you can find floorplans outside each stairwell) for registration, so we can start no later than 9:00 AM. Side events (MOREWEIGHT and trash on Saturday, more trash on Sunday) will run after the main event.

The university website has directions for getting to campus, as well as a map. You can park for free in Lot X (north end of campus by OPT) or certain lots in the colleges (west end of campus by REN, STP, and CGR). See here for more information about the college lots.

Note that there is significant construction throughout the city. In particular, the intersection at Columbia Street will be closed between Hagey and Phillip, blocking the most direct route to Lot X.

The most convenient place for food is the "University Shops Plaza," which is right beside campus. The on-campus food services are very limited on weekends.

If you need to contact me, my number is [removed]. You can also email me (probably better, because cell reception is poor in the building).

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Grapes and Wrath (Jordan, Aayush, and Adam) defeated Potsdam Giants (Sebastian, Derek, Daniel, and Joe) in a one-game final. Derek (Potsdam Giants) was the top scorer. Final stats can be found here. I'll hold onto all scoresheets for about a month, so let me know about any mistakes in the stats.

I'd like to thank the club exec (Aayush, Faith, and Cole) for handling administrative details, our staffers (Christine, Faith, Kira, Jj, Cole, and Brian M.), the NASAT editors and writers, and of course, all the teams and players that came out! Also, special thanks to Brian M. for picking up our buzzer set from the post office, just in time for the playoffs.

We've started side events now, and we'll be back tomorrow for Delta Burke.

I keep repeating myself, but thanks to TD Ming-Ho and all the people who generously staffed this event. Thanks to my teammates Aayush and Adam, and to our opponents for some very nail-biting games. It was enjoyable.

No thanks to the weird "King's Cup" rules on Saturday night.
