Bergen Academies Spring (NJ) - 4/11/15

Post by jonpin »

Bergen County Academies Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce that we will be hosting BASQT 2015: Now with 100% More Tournament, a high school tournament on Saturday, April 11, 2015.

Bergen Academies Spring Quiz Tournament 2015

Questions: We will be using the Potatoville set for this tournament. These will be power-marked regular difficulty questions.

Tournament Format: Our tournament format will depend on the number of teams, but we anticipate using a two-stage bracket system, and guaranteeing all teams that stay to the tournament's conclusion at least 9 games.
The games will be played in PACE format, that is no negs, 20-point powers, and bounceback bonuses. As a member of PACE, I encourage teams to sign up for NSC, and I think hosting a tournament using that format (which is not typically played in the NJ/NYC circuit) is a great way for teams to get experience in the different style of play before nationals.

Nationals Qualifications: We intend to affiliate with PACE NSC. As such, the top 15% of teams will qualify for the NSC. If we receive a higher recognition, as much as 25% of the field will qualify.

Registration: We will use the following fee structure:
$70 for first team / $60 for each additional team
-$5 for each working buzzer system (limit 2 unless authorization given for more)
-$10 for each experienced staffer (subject to TD approval)
Minimum fee per team: $30

A Google sign-up form will be posted on Tuesday, January 20 allowing teams to sign up.
Until we are certain we have staff and buzzers to accommodate more, our field cap is 32.

Logistics: Check-in time will be announced closer to tournament date.

With just over a month to go before the tournament, we've got 19 teams registered. I'll send out an update to registered coaches soon.

With two weeks to go, we're at 25 teams. If you're interested in registering, please do so this week so we can have everything prepared as we need. We reserve the right to close the field beginning this Thursday, and may admit teams that register after then or not as is appropriate to make a convenient field.

Congratulations to Kellenberg High School for defeating Hunter in the last game of the playoffs 470-340 and then the final 420-310 to win the first Bergen Academies Spring Quizbowl Tournament. Notably, this is the first high school tournament ever hosted by BCA which wasn't won by Hunter.

Many thanks to Ben Zhang for running stats, and Maggie Larkin for her help moderating. Stats will be posted shortly.
