Midseason College Poll
Midseason College Poll
With the second semester about to begin, the midseason college poll will now be commenced.
Please do not post ballots in the thread, but feel free to ask questions about player eligibility, team formation, etc.
Do not vote for high school teams. You can vote for B teams. Ballots must contain 25 teams. E-mail them to me at chey0004 AT umn DOT edu.
I reserve the right to throw out ballots that are obviously joke or too eccentric.
Voting closes on January 16 (Friday).
Remember you are voting based on how the best possible (but still realistic) team would do at a hypothetical nationals-like tournament.
For reference, preseason results:
1. Virginia Cavaliers
2. Penn Quakers
3. Chicago Maroons A
4. Michigan Wolverines
5. Stanford Cardinal
6. Maryland Terrapins A
7. MCTC Goombas
8. Columbia Tigers
9. Harvard Crimson
10. Yale Bulldogs
11. MIT Dragons
12. Georgia Tech Yellowjackets
13. Alberta Astronauts
14. UCSD Stinkbugs
15. WUSTL Monsters
16. North Carolina Tar Heels
17. Dartmouth Dragoons
18. Berkeley Golden Bears
19. Illinois Fighting Illini
20. Northwestern Wildcats
21. Minnesota Golden Gophers
22. Chicago Maroons B
23. Maryland Terrapins B
24. Brown Bears

I am pretty sure MIT's de facto mascot is the "beavers," UCSD is the "Tritons" [sic], and Dartmouth is the "Big Green."Cheynem wrote:11. MIT Dragons

Our mascot is the beaver, but the term for an MIT student engaged in interscholastic competition is an "engineer." I think I like "dragons" better, to be honest.Matthew Jackson wrote:I am pretty sure MIT's de facto mascot is the "beavers," UCSD is the "Tritons" [sic], and Dartmouth is the "Big Green."Cheynem wrote:11. WUSTL Bears. MCTC, I learned through extensive Wikipedia-ing, used to have a very successful basketball program which, like MSU-Mankato, wore purple and gold and went by "Mavericks". Truly Rob Carson personified.Cheynem wrote: 7. MCTC Goombas
13. Alberta Astronauts

Oh, and Alberta is reportedly the "Golden Bears" for the men...but the "Pandas" for the women. So there's that, too. Back to your regularly-scheduled voting.

Matt Jackson is correct. I'm very sad that MIT gets "Dragons" and we get "Dragoons" but I suppose that's the Northeast pecking order for ya.

I don't think Mike gives a shit about this, and it's funnier this way, but Columbia and Princeton are the Lions and Tigers, respectively. Also, would the hypothetical teams being ranked include players who have not played at all so far this year (e.g. Alex Gerten)?

Re: Midseason College Poll
MCTC is indeed the Mavericks, though it's true that you could probably gain a substantial advantage by leaping directly onto my head during a game. That said, there's probably a 95% chance that neither B nor I will be enrolled next semester either, so vote for us at your own risk.

I made this spreadsheet to help me vote. It has stats from all the regular tournaments last semester, so other voters will probably find it useful.

To hop on the stats train Saajid has started: I've continued with the stats-collecting project I did last year. It's here. I've updated everything other than the DEES Online Mirror (also, if a completed mirror isn't on the spreadsheet, that means that I would like combined stats. Combined stats are cool).Ras superfamily wrote:I made this spreadsheet to help me vote. It has stats from all the regular tournaments last semester, so other voters will probably find it useful.
EDIT: I replaced the original link in this post with the publicly viewable link in my post after Stephen's. Also, I should really thank Dennis Beeby. Without him, I would've been really far behind on this project.

The Northeast is actually a mountain with seven terraces; as you ascend each layer you get to erase an "o." Once you are a "Dragn" you can enter the Earthly Paradise.Periplus of the Erythraean Sea wrote:Matt Jackson is correct. That depends on how you interpretchristino wrote:would the hypothetical teams being ranked include players who have not played at all so far this year (e.g. Alex Gerten)?
[emphasis added]. If someone hasn't been available but they've promised you they're coming to nationals and have a plane ticket bought, that's one thing; if they've effectively quit the team by never showing up to anything and not responding to calls all year, that's another.Cheynem wrote: best possible (but still realistic) team

I promise to be as decisive as the Minnesota Vikings in dealing with Adrian Peterson. However, please let us know if there is any quizbowl elevator footage that would change our decisionmaking.Cheynem wrote:Just a note that I DO NOT want a repeat of the preseason where people change their minds every few days and send in a new ballot.
